Andy Armstrong has shown mad skills in the field.
Some players who struggled at times last year have improved ie...McGarry, McMahon, Dukart and Ober have added a year of strength and maturity and it shows.
McDowell is a player. Both at the plate and playing center field.
Claunch has been fantastic. A little concerned about the backup catcher position at this point.
Lineup priority....is defense. Today at least it looked like the coaching staff sent out the best possible defensive lineup they could field.
Hjerpe and Frisch These guys are really good. I can not recall a season when two freshmen pitching debuts looked this great. Who is our pitching coach? Props to him for having these guys so sharp so early.

You win with defense and that means both pitching and position players. You can always score, you can never take their runs off the board.

Who do we blame for Gonzaga hitting .533 and scoring seven runs against Mully? Nate of course. He gave the Zags our signs on his way out of town. I'm pretty sure I heard a trash can being banged on yesterday. Or it was the sound of me eating a delishious brat. One or the other Andy's play in the hole was a season highlite reel. That was nice. I thought he could get the ball but I didn't think he had enough arm to get it to 1B. Color me impressed. Dukarts 4(!) hits all looked like line drives in the scorebook. A couple of them weren't. Mascarenas is getting long looks. Today at 3B, Friday at 2B. They must see something there. He had only 1 chance today. He's a Junior so needs to be plug & play Funny how a good pitching performance makes us world beaters again

Jake has consistently helped the Beavs win with his ability to shut down rallies, and close the game - for that he deserves a free pass on the Gonzaga loss on Saturday. There will be better days ahead for "Mully".
Having said that, people I've talked to think Yeskie was correct in his early assessment and subsequent placement of Jake in the OSU bullpen. Jake's strengths are his pitching intelligence, cool head and ability to locate his pitches effectively. Fastball velocity and overpowering secondary offerings are not his calling cards.
For three years Jake has come on in relief of OSU flamethrowers Drew Rasmussen, Jake Thompson, Luke Heimlich, Grant Gambrell and others. Working the four edges of the strike zone with pitches in the low to mid 80's following the "heat" can be very effective for one time through the order. The drop in velocity forces opposing hitters to adjust their timing significantly. On Saturday, Jake was registering from 7 MPH below Washburn and 11 mph below Frisch. Had he pitched behind them instead of in front of them, he might have been far more successful than he was in the start.
Nobody should get down on Mully - he has a good set of tools, they just need to be utilized from the right place and in the right situation. Starters need stamina and power. We saw that with Chamberlain and Pfennigs and it's there with Verburg, Mundt and Burns as well. Bullpen arms like Mulholland, Murphy, etc. can be devastating in a late inning change of pace scenario.

Excited to see more pitching like today!

I am just giddy with excitement about having all that speed in the outfield.
What’s up with Valero-Sanchez, looks like he only played in Friday’s game. I had heard that he never gets cheated on his swings.

Final day and 1 st game ended with New Mexico in field 4-3 2 Nd and 3 rd. Gonzaga guts ball to short. He throws high but first baseman catches it and runner from 2 Nd scored without a play. Quite an ending. Looking forward to beating BYU.

Yes it's very early in the season but so far, not too optimistic on this team. 1-2 in Surprise....and the 1 was mainly on 1 really good inning. They are 2-2. Phil hitting the booze again?

It's not just the players. Both new coaches are building not only an identity but game trust.
Small ball isn't a big part of MiLB, will it be part of MC's plan?
Anyway, players are adjusting to new staff, some to D1 competition. You can like your coach(es) but it's trust built both ways in the heat of competition that builds trust and program identity.
At the same time MC and JD are finding out the differences in being leaders at this level and building their program. It's a bit different once the s%#t hits the fan and games start.
Simply put... there is a lot going on here and it'll take a while.

In pro ball you can draft the 3-run HR guys., There isn't that many of them coming out of HS. Plus, the only folks who bunt are NL pitchers.

"Work In Progress" is my impression to start the season. Potential up the wazoo, enough of a storied past to attract good players and a coach who bleeds Black & Orange mean we likely will have our share of fine seasons.

I would like to have 4 games of 8 run innings, not realistic. Win or loose now doesnt mean as much now as it will "in conference" . Long ways to go , lot to learn, and we will learn a lot about our coaches and players. See you at the ball park, for every one of those games.
