Baseball America posted the first round of their 2020 Mock Draft and some names of interest appeared. Only three P-12 players are being projected as first round selections. ASU's first baseman Spencer Torkelson is slotted at #3 to the Miami Marlins, UCLA outfielder Garrett Mitchel is pegged at #6 to the Mariners, and Arizona catcher-first baseman Austin Wells is is a Diamondback selection at #18.
Of interest to Beaver fans, Mississippi State has RHP JT Ginn slotted to the Giants at #13 and 2B Justin Foscue going at #25. The Beavs will see two first round picks in Starkville next month.
Jesuit High's Mick Abel is scheduled to go as the #15 pick to the Phillies. Abel has slipped a bit but not much as a result of inconsistent velocity on the summer circuit in 2019. He has touched 97 and has had games where he camps on 94-96 but in several showcase tournaments last summer he was in the low 90's. Scouts think he has the best frame (projection) in the HS class of pitchers in this draft, but also stress his first priority is to add weight, fill out his frame and get stronger. He had a busy summer following his state title year at Jesuit, so fatigue may have played some part in the velo that came and went over the summer.
Some numbers: Twenty of the thirty first round selections were collegians. Nine of the thirteen pitchers slotted in the first round were college pitchers. Jared Kelly, a RHP from Refugio, TX. HS was the top prep pitcher taken at #8, followed by Abel at #15.

Yes, I am biased , but - I love seeing kids choose the College route to prove and improve their chances for more rapid movement through the minors to the majors, as well as a clubs interest in throwing dollars at low risk / higher return situations. Glad to see that 2/3 's of top draft went to college guys. HS Pitchers may have a tougher road, as almost 70% were collegians. Both Nick and Adley improved their status due to OSU success. Quicker to majors and bigger payouts. At any rate, there are a lot of baseball players out there - to compete with , no matter what level you enter at. Do you think that ( if the California payment deal passes ), that things will change dramatically, for baseball, where they only give 11.5 schollies to a baseball squad ? May be too many unknowns at this time to even venture a guess .

All I know is that IMO Adley and his dad, and Nick Madrigal, could have been making great money a lot sooner with their training videos and with merchandise and endorsements had they been able to sell their names while in school, so we need to make sure Oregon State is on that train too.

Is there a trend or unwritten rule about a HS pitcher going to the majors if...?
He is a first round pick? Or is it more the signing bonus negotiations. I'd love to see Mick Abel in a Beaver uniform for 3 years but I just can't imagine a HS kid turning down first round money... maybe after they can use the names to make money while in school.
I think the other factor that could slowly be changing this is if MLB shuts down those minor league teams as has been discussed.
Just curious what others are thinking but I don't remember any Beaver Baseball recruit being drafted in the first round and not going MLB.
