When you cannot force a punt until late in the 3rd quarter, you are in Big Trouble In Little China. The positive: We actually made physical contact more often than last year on D. What did us in was getting out of position combined with their skill position players actually making some good plays.
Crazy call of the game: Who goes for a 2XP just before the end of the 1st half? Had JS got a pair of XP's in place of the two missed 2XP's or had he got a score out of one of the two 2XP's, there is a push versus the spread of 14.
Start hot, fade away. After we scored to make it 10-7, our O went in a shell. Combine the 2XP call with that and we were lucky to be down by just 15 at the half. Make the right call on the XP, get the O to produce one more TD or the D to make a stop and there you go, a 7 point deficit at halftime, which would have been an acceptable outcome all things considered.
Silver lining around the dark cloud: Our combination of penalties, turnovers and missed kicks was nowhere as high as other teams I have seen play in their opening games.
Colletto was 1 for 3 as I recall with his runs. Was it on him? The OL? Can we add in a pass play or two for crossing up the opposing D?
Choukair made all that he was asked to kick. Special teams play was adequate to good.
Looking ahead to Hawai'i: They are going to make us play in space on D. Their QB's get the ball out quick. Can we jump a route? Our O should be able to make their fair share of plays. Considering we did have a few good points in our favor, can we add to them? Might as well compete to the end and see if the Warriors hand the game to us on a platter with mistakes. They certainly had a ton of them versus Arizona.
1 down, 11 to go on the schedule. Gotta keep building!

Good points. The OK state touchdown that seemed to break the defenses back was the second quarter 3rd and 8 pass to the sideline. The crowd was loud, the energy was good...but couldnt quite get to the qb, then a missed tackle, slow recognition and Bam, momentum was theirs and confidence. Ok States offense played with so much confidence. They really knew what they were doing. Getting early sacks would have changed so much. Overall the defense was improved from last season, but not enough in this game against a top 20 offense.

Basics on both sides of the ball killed us.. Offensive line was not as advertised and our defense was out of position all night and could not tackle anyone. I thought we got some stud DE’s ? We had no pressure on their Freshman QB - in his first game. Taking a page out of the ‘sucks’ fan speak, I did like the uniforms though.

We have some better players on defense, but the unit still needs more. We’re missing playmakers on the perimeter- corners are bad. We lacked both contain and pressure from the DE/OLB spot.
The interior D-line made several nice plays against a very good running game, winning battles and tackling well; the linebackers- particularly Gumbs also made plays going north and south. But despite the talent upgrades at LB, the unit lacks presence- getting misdirected or swept up to be badly out of position- the 50+ yard TD run in the 3rd looked they weren’t even on the field. Maintaining position comes with experience and these guys are young.
I think there are pieces to build on, but I don’t see how the unit will be effective this year. There are just still too many holes to be exploited. Anybody who can complete a 10-yard out route will move the chains on third down against our secondary.
So is coach Tibs is worth what he’s getting paid? Maybe- if he’s the one getting guys like Gumbs and Whittley on the team. Think about how Utah did on D when they first joined the Pac. They had good coaches, but until they had several recruiting cycles to get Pac-12 caliber talent on the roster, they struggled to get off the field. We’re in a similar place.

When and if JS decides he needs a new DC I hope he gives Jim Leavitt a call. Leavitt has turned bad defenses around overnight and made them respectable at both Colorado and Oregon. We need someone with a proven track record of coaching good defenses. I believe Levitt is an analyst at FSU so he might jump at a chance to become a DC again.

Plus out of our price range.

Sorry but I see it as a lack of overall talent.

Our contain and DB play was beyond horrible, rookie DB, I won't name names, was totally taken out of every play (did the DBs actually ever knock a pass down, don't remember one? Just painful to watch, got sucked inside ALL FRIGGN NIGHT.. Our supposed LB upgrades, well, overall, that is NOT what we saw. There is nothing resembling a great MLB on the field, period, and again. contain by OLB/DEs was terribly executed, all night.. The O was serviceable, and Luton was what we should expect, played well most of the night, has a real connection with #17, our TEs were for the most part MIA, too many knock down passes?? The RBs, just ok, but the Oline didn't give them much room either, especially after the first qtr.. Their freshman QB, is likely the real deal and we will not be the last team he riddles this year. He might need some grow up lessons, i.e. don't be an @sshole kid. (after the last TD, he turned to the Beav bench and waved a little "Bye Bye" to them, like you guys stink!!) Was hoping that someone would take it personally, but alas, didn't.. Grades- Offense=C+, QB=B, RB=C, WR=B- (#17=A), Defense=D, DBs=F, Oline=C, Dline=C, LBs=D, DE=F (lost contain all night) regardless, an enjoyable nice weather evening considering... Some minor improvements, MAYBE, but overall, more of the same. LOTS of grumbling leaving the stadium, gonna be near free tickets very soon because what I heard was," not paying to watch this again", which is NOT what you want to hear...Sad state of affairs all around.. Hopefully Hawaii will be better, but our DBs are going to get killed without improvement..
