My buddies and I are coming into Portland on Thursday and staying in Salem for the weekend. Any suggesyions on things do we have to do while in town? Try the wine tasting just across the river in McMinnville and Dundee. It’s a great time of year for that. Use the Wheatland ferry north of Salem for old school transportation. Silver Falls and Oregon Garden are beautiful now also. This is pro level advice. Just beautiful vineyards. They will be finishing up the tasting season.Just can't go wrong driving up to most vineyards & tasting. The Newberg Dundee bypass has made the traffic in Dundee much much better. I love going in to a tasting room and seeing the owners just out of the vineyard pouring wines

Oregon coast isn’t far away.... get on Hwy 20 and go straight until you run into the ocean. 50 miles from Corvallis..... Nye Beach, the Bayfront, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Georgie’s, Local Oceans, Rogue Brewery... the beach....

Best kept secret on the Oregon Coast is the beach between Waldport and Yachats. No tourist traps just beautiful clean beaches and a great rocky area to explore tide pools etc,

I'd take a trip to the coast and take the long way down to Salem. If you are in Portland and need some food on the East side, here are my suggestions. Great Notion Brewery best in PDX IMHO Tamale Boy Pine State Biscuits Tasty and Sons Life of Pie Pizza Russell St BBQ Por Que No

I'll just add onto this thread.
How is tailgating for the games? I'm assuming since this is a Friday night game that tailgating will be lighter than normal.

If you're staying in Salem, Silver Creek Falls is a short trip and has some good (though well-populated) hiking with loops of multiple lengths depending on your stamina and age of any kids. The falls themselves are a little underwhelming this time of year with water levels so low, but the sheer height/size of some of them are still impressive.
You'll definitely want to hit the Oregon Coast, it's just a matter of where. Heading west from Salem, you'll hit Lincoln City, which I find too sprawling and urban for my liking. I like to head south and go to Newport; Nye Beach is a personal favorite of my family's. Heading east from there will dump you right in Corvallis, so you could maybe spend Friday during the day making that loop since tailgating will probably be limited prior to 5pm...

Bay View in Depoe Bay has really good thai food, is right on the highway and never too crowded. Depoe Bay is always worth a stop.

As does Thai Bay in LC, right next to Galucci's Pizza. For those with mild taste buds, Thai Bay has some spicy Pad Kee Mao(Drunken Noodles). I will have to file away Bay View for a fall trip to Sea and Sand RV.

My best guess is yeah, it will be lighter than normal. School isn't in session yet, its a holiday weekend and a Friday. Corvallis is pretty small a lot of fans will drive down, but be there just maybe an hour before kickoff I bet. You shouldn't have any issue finding a tailgate spot close in.

This is a pretty big OC game for us, a lot of regional students should make it, and with the long weekend, more people will travel - i'm expecting Corvallis to be pretty crowded Friday with much tailgating going on. Awesome weather too. You'll like the warm dry weather after a summer of 90+/70+ days.

Normally pretty good, however the quirk about Oregon State is we are a quarters system school. We have 10 week terms. Students do not start until the 3rd week of September or so. So, this game will be lightly attended, not out of disrespect to the opponent, to be sure this is our best OOC game in eons, but the fact most of the students aren't here yet. In my long Beaver game going history, I have found tailgaters to be pretty cool around visiting fans. Most of us aren't jerks. Walk up to a group with a beer to share and we will chat you up!
