Gundy ain’t 40 anymore..... Nope. He’s 52. I don’t know how much you guys know about the whole story on that. I don’t remember the exact date, but I remember we played Texas Tech at home that day. The biggest newspaper in Oklahoma is the Daily Oklahoman. At that time it was owned by the Gaylord family. The same Gaylords who’s name is on the OU football stadium. So Oklahoma State rarely got decent coverage unless it was a bad story. The “journalists” that were hired to cover OSU were generally either complete newbies or talentless hacks. I could be wrong about this detail, but I believe the week before OSU went to Troy and lost. Bobby Reid was Oklahoma State’s QB but was benched before the Troy game and the beat writer wrote a hit piece on him. There were definite racial overtones since Reid is black and the basic hook of the story was how his mama was there to feed him chicken. (If you go online to read the archived story, the Oklahoman has modified the story somewhat to make it less offensive) There is a way to say that a player has problems on the field, but this was not the way to do it. The story was in the Saturday game day paper. After the game was over (and Oklahoma State won despite being big home underdogs), somebody in the athletic department gave Gundy the paper and pointed out the story. Mike read it right before he went to his post game press conference. Needless to say, he was already emotional from the win and then to see a story like that, it led to a very uncharacteristic outburst of emotion. The whole thing was just a reaction. It was really amazing to watch how it brought all the fan together. It did help with recruiting, but that was never the motivation. But at the same time, the media across the country banded together to support their fellow journalist. It took years for it to really go away. Side note: after the rant, Reid and his mother thought that the whole thing was a show. Reid transferred out after the season and kept telling anybody who would listen that Gundy has basically ruined his life. Then magically, Reid was looking for a job, Gundy hired him and then Reid’s story changed.

Boone Pickens and we'll be twins. Does he have a brother who would like to financially support this other OSU?

Then magically, Reid was looking for a job, Gundy hired him and then Reid’s story changed. Gundy is in year 15 of that job. Gotta believe coaches lose their effectiveness at that point. It's a high burnout job. Even the low stress guys that can hang around awhile, their stuff starts to get stale, they fall into the same predictable offense, get out of touch with the players etc. Fans lose patience because, well they are fans, and then all of a sudden you have a washed up coach. 15 years...

The problem is that Gundy's contract is structured in such a way that it is basically a lifetime contract. It auto-renews every year extending it out to 5 years. While I don't disagree with you that sometimes change is required due to the message getting stale, I do think that it depends on the coach. I think that coaches that aren't really rah-rah guys or known as strict disciplinarians (pretty much the ends of the spectrum) get stale. But the ones that truly just love the process and helping the kids turn into men while teaching them how to better play the sport have a lot more they can rely on. Every situation is different.
Gundy has done amazing things at Oklahoma State. But there are things that he still doesn't really get. He's not a great recruiter. He hires some and they do really well. Our WR coach is one of the best in the biz at both talent evaluation and development. As a result, we've had Bryant, Blackmon, Washington, and now Wallace who all have or should have won the Biletnikoff in the last few years. Other than Bryant (who was a huge grade risk), none of those guys were highly rated recruits. We get a lot of value at the RB position as well. Defense is always the "what if" game for us. We always seem to either have good DT or good DE, but almost never at the same time. LB play is always up and down. We generally have a decent secondary, but we tend to start Freshman and they play until they graduate and then we start over. So there seems to always be a swing.
Anyways, back to work for another 3 hours and then time to go get on a plane. It will be great to get to talk to a some of your fans over the next few days. I really hope some of you plan on coming to Stillwater for the return trip. I can't promise amazing scenery, but I will promise that you will be treated well as long as you don't act like a jackass. It is very common for visiting fans to find reasons to come back on game days even when their teams aren't playing. The reason is because the people are top notch, with exception of course.

In related news, I'm not revealing my tailgate drink of choice before the opener. Maybe it's Black Butte Porter.. Maybe it's Wild Beaver... Maybe it's Zima. Keep'em guessing just like Gundy.

Zima - you mean benching the best drink for a 3rd stringer? Your Black Butte Porter would immediately transfer to Fresneck and set consumption records!

Man, about 16 min in Gundy calls out 2 of his players revealing some details on what they need to do to get better and flat out questioning there effort.
Maybe that is his style to motivate them... not sure but it struck me as odd.
Go Beavs!

Is this good, bad, or no difference for our defensive game plan and ability to hopefully at least slow down OkSt a little bit?
Dunno. But it's a weird move to be all Johnnie Tight Lips about it. I think they are going with the true freshman and dont want to let the Beav D craft a plan to rattle him. I say do it anyway. i was right, Gundy was going with the freshman all along. But wrong to think it would even matter. The day after recap from Kerry is interesting. The D had 9 tackles for loss. Better than any game last year. Portland Tribune
