Thru the first three games? Preseason predictions indicated a top notch pitching staff, solid defense, and a marked drop off in offensive production.
It seems that pitching and solid defense are spot on. After 27 runs in three games it would seem that the offense is in better shape than anticipated.
Any comments from those in Surprise that have had a chance to see the games would be appreciated.

It has shown that it is a contender. Defensively, great play in the outfield all over the place. Already better than last year. Infield not tested enough to say for sure, but they look pretty good. Offensively, when agressive they can be really good. If they do enough to force teams to pitch to Adley and Tyler, look out. Tyler in particular seems to really be enjoying himself in his new role.

I watched all of the games including the other teams and NM is a good team. With that said the Beavs have a very high potential but a lot of development needs to happen by june to be a contender. In todays game we got to see a lot of the players who are PUSHING for playing time and I truly believe they could and would be starting for the other teams. We lost a lot of power hitting but I dont believe we are going to suffer a whole lot. Just my thoughts. .

A couple of brief observations on pitching - always from the cheap seats. A 3 game sampling doesn't offer much but it is a start. First, the competition in the Collegiate Classic shouldn't be expected to offer PAC-12 level competition. UNM plays in the MWC and GU plays in the WCC, neither would fare well over a 30 game P-12 schedule. Minnesota plays in the BIG-10 and although not known for it's baseball prowess, it is a Power-5 conference and the Gophers, although they have yet to show it here in Surprise, are a good team.
In the first 3 games, OSU has paraded nine pitchers to the mound and as a group, they have been impressive. Abel looked like the Kevin of early last season. His command and control wasn't as sharp as it was over the last part of the 2018 season. He sat on 91 mph and his ability to locate wasn't sharp. In my judgement, it was simply the first game kinks. In game 2, Fehmel was masterful. He had a good slider and curve ball going and he used both corners to perfection. His fast ball was 88-89 all day and had some good run to it tailing in on RH hitters. He stayed down, mixed his pitches, issued one walk and frankly pitched to his ceiling. It was vintage Fehmel. Today, Sam Tweedt gave the Beavs a good start going 4 2/3 innings while facing 21 hitters befor exhausting his pitch count. Sam gave up some hard hit balls but was poised and experienced with men on base in the 5 innings he worked. He only allowed one run.
Against UNM, Dylan Pearce relieved Abel and pitched very effectively. He hit his targets with a 91-92 mph fastball and kept the Lobo bats at bay. He was followed by Mitch Verburg who then was relieved mid-count after facing a couple of hitters, by Brandon Eisert. Verburg looked good, he was right at 90mp and low in the zone. The quick exit was concerning - more back problems maybe?
The Gonzaga game saw Freshman Joey Mundt pitch the 9th in relief of Bryce. Mundt is a big power pitcher at 6-5, 216 and showed some smooth mechanics and a 91-92 mph heater. Mundt looks polished and poised. With some additional life to his fastball, I could see him with a mid-week start this season.
Today, Nathan Burns relived Greg Tweedt and piched the best game I've seen him pitch in a Beaver uni. His #1 was electric at 92-93 and on several occasions the scouts had him at 94 mph. Burns works the knees consistently and at times last year had forced Adley to repeatedly dig balls out of the dirt or block a short hop. He will come up in the zone, trying to come inside hard and jam the hitters hands. His breaking stuff was nasty. That performance today gave the OSU coaches a lot to think about going forward. He challenged Yeskie today - he made a bold bid for a start. Chamberlain finished up today and his appearance was uneventful. He went right to work and closed out the game for OSU - just doing what he does.

Thanks for that great post, chinmusic. That's just the kind of information I long for this time of the season.

Thanks for that great post, chinmusic. That's just the kind of information I long for this time of the season. Ditto...great post. Very informative and insightful to our pitching. I only got to watch the "live" game stats and "watching" Fehmel cruise through the innings, it appeared he was pitching a gem. Based on your commentary, he did.

Chin, I thought the same thing when Verburg went out: back. However, when Elliot Willy got the hit yesterday, Verburg went crazy in the pen. Verburg jumping up and down and spinning didn't look like a bad back. Also, Verburg was loosening up in the pen as one possibilities to pitch after Burns. Is think Verburg is fine.

Chin- that was a fantastic post.
By any chance - do you or does anyone on this board know what happened to Jordan Britton? He was a jr last year and contributed in middle relief. He was mentioned in some 2019 Beaver baseball preview articles as late as january 2019 as someone who was expected to contribute. But I note he is not even on the teams official on line 2019 roster? On another site someone mentioned that they were pretty sure he was at the diamond dinner.
Is he injured? No longer in schooL? Did he actually go pro? Would have been nice to have his experience in the pen to make us even stronger for sure.

The team is putting up runs, which is nice to see. But one area I would like to see improvement in, is the top two spots in the batting order. Granted, the game against Minnesota was nice to see, with Jones and McGarry going 4-8. But if Adley is going to be as great as we all anticipate, then those table setters need to be on base, and not 1-8, 0-9 production at the plate.

Last player removed from the roster.
