From when I had too much time on my hands. Baseline data for this year's excuses.
Improved communication on the floor, getting the ball inside, and experience and depth seem to be the ingredients to success.
Sixty Excuses
Dec 11 Savannah State at Home 90-93: Oregon State men's basketball continues to fall with Savannah State loss
1. We'll be OK," he said. "It's just hard times right now. But again, we've just got to keep grinding."
2. "We got to get tougher," Wayne Tinkle said. "In the locker room we told them we got to get tougher, mentally and physically with executing the game plan, guarding guys, taking care of the ball, knocking down shots when we have them to knock down. Nobody's going to feel sorry for us. We're not going to make excuses."
3. "Starting off the game we weren't really defending the three-point line very well," Thompson said. "We became over-conscious of that later on in the first half and the second half, which was giving them easy drives to the basket. We've got to do a better job of paying attention to the scouting report and guarding the three-point line."
4. "We had plays to win the game and we just didn't take advantage of them," Wayne Tinkle said.
Dec 16 Long Beach State at Dam City Classic 67-71: Opportunity falls away as Oregon State loses first Dam City Classic game to Long Beach State
5. "Missed free throws over the course of the game have cost us at least three," head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "Defensive breakdowns late. We've had plenty of opportunities, as wounded as we are. We've got to have guys step up and make plays. That's what's cost us at least four of five losses."
6. Early in the week, Tinkle acknowledged OSU had gotten few breaks during the season but noted they are "earned by your habits and the level of intensity you play with."
7. "I thought our guys stood in there toe-to-toe and it came down to them making plays and we didn't," Tinkle said.
Dec 18 Portland in Dam City Classic 45-53: Oregon State men's basketball suffers another setback with Dam City Classic loss to Portland
8. "I thought we kind of came apart as a group, just the energy that was there," OSU freshman point guard JaQuori McLaughlin said. "No one really talking to each other or picking each other up during that time."
9. "Too many times when it becomes the moment of truth, guys isolate themselves out there," Wayne Tinkle said. "And we need to address that. It's no secret. People that watch us see it. That's part of chemistry. That's part of accountability. That's part of leadership."
10. "We told our guys this week," said Tinkle, tapping the table at the postgame press conference for emphasis, "forget Power Five, Pac-12. We've got to get a chip on our shoulder. ... A lot of the teams that are knocking us off are playing with more of one than we are."
11. Through it all, Wayne Tinkle remained optimistic that while his team had not been able to battle past its flaws to a victory, that there were still reasons for hope this season. "I do know this: it is going to turn," he said. "It's going to turn."
Dec 21 Kent State at Home 69-50: Oregon State Beavers use 18-0 run to down Kent State, end five-game skid
12. "This was really big for us and we're just going to keep building and building on it," Manuel said.
13. This season has been marred by injuries for Oregon State, but Tinkle asked Beaver Nation to hang in there. "We know we've got a young group," he said. "Boy, they're going to turn into something, so we really appreciate the loyal support."
Dec 28: USC at Home 63-70: 'Same old song' as Oregon State men's basketball falls to No. 22 USC
14. "Came out flat and waited until we got down to show some fight and some intensity. That's been a little bit of a marker for this group," Tinkle said. "... It's been the same old song."
15. "We were definitely pretty tentative in the first half of the game," sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. said. "That's what we talked about at halftime, being more aggressive in the second half."
16. "At this point it's on the guys," Tinkle said. "Aside from me swinging from the rafters in the locker room to try to get them going, they've got to have some leadership step up and some accountability, and that's what we're going to challenge them with."
Dec 30: UCLA at Home 63-76: Oregon State men's basketball sees progress in loss to No. 2 UCLA
17. "We don't believe in moral victories, but our guys did a lot of good things," OSU head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "I'm proud of them. ... We've been showing progress. Even though it's not equating to wins, we've been showing progress in areas."
18. "They're starting to understand the system, the coverages. Our communication is getting a little bit better," Tinkle said. "I thought we flew around a little bit, but with discipline for the most part. It wasn't like we were just all over the place."
19. "More than anything I think we just proved to ourselves and others we can play with any team in the country," Thompson said.
20. "Our margin for error is very small," Wayne Tinkle said. "Mental, physical fatigue, we can't allow that to creep in."
21. "Some people don't think you can develop leadership. I certainly do," Tinkle said. "Sometimes it might be a battle that you can't win, but we're going to continue to ask for that."
Jan 4: at WSU 62-75: Oregon State Beavers fall 75-62 against Washington State Cougars in Spokane
Pregame: "It's cost us at least four or five games," Tinkle said of poor free throw shooting.
22. "We stopped executing on offense," Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said. "We went away from what was working."
23. "We executed our game plan for a while," Tinkle said.
Jan 14 at UO 43-85: Oregon Ducks thump Oregon State Beavers in Civil War
24. Eubanks told The Oregonian/OregonLive's Danny Moran last week that the Beavers don't always practice hard. "Sometimes we bring it," Eubanks said. "Sometimes we don't."
25. OSU guard Stephen Thompson Jr. seconded Eubanks' assessment this week. "If this game doesn't get us to play with passion, I don't know what will," Thompson said before the Civil War.
26. Wayne Tinkle didn't dispute his players' observations about practice intensity, but pointed to his team's youth. OSU started two freshmen and two sophomores against Oregon. "I think that's part of immaturity," Tinkle said. "At times we've got to beg, borrow and steal a little bit. It's not necessarily
effort, but focus and intensity. I think it's attributable to our lack of experience."
27. "They came out with more intensity than us," Thompson said after the game. "After they hit us with the first punch, we didn't really respond."
Jan 19 Stanford at Home 46-62: Oregon State basketball lets opportunity slip away against undermanned Stanford
28. "It's a numbers game. We just don't have the depth and the depth of talent," Beavers head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "Our guys fight hard to hang in there. ... Most of the games we're competing and we're right there, and then there's a moment of truth where ... we let a little mental frustration slip in and we get off page. And I think that's cost us a bunch this year."
29. "Our guys stood toe-to-toe with them for a while," Tinkle said. "But then again, I think we let our inexperience show by going away from the things that were working. That's when the game slipped away."
Jan 21: Cal at Home 58-69: Soul searching continues for Oregon State following Cal loss, Beavers' seventh defeat in a row
30. Pregame: There's been a couple of games we were boat-raced. But most of the games we're competing and we're right there and then there's a moment of truth where ... we let a little mental frustration slip in and we get off page. And I think that's cost us a bunch this year." - Wayne Tinkle
31. "I've got to do some searching here because I'm having a hard time getting these guys to focus for 40 minutes. That's on me," he said. "I've got to do a better job because we're still continuing to shoot ourselves in the foot here and we're a hell of a ways into the season."
32. "That's happened to us quite a lot this year," said sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr., who finished with 19 points (6 of 15) and five assists. "Too many times when that happens, we tend to fold a little bit, get down on ourselves and don't match the aggression they're bringing when they go on a run."
33. "If we can eliminate those (missteps), we still may lose with what we have, but we're going to be closer ... and that's what's going to breed the confidence that we can get over the hump," Tinkle said. "One little ember can spark things."
34. "I've not been around a team that talks less than this team," Tinkle said. "This team doesn't talk. They won't talk to each other. That's part of a young team becoming a little more mature."
35. "I know for me personally I'm usually good at talking in the beginning of the game, breaking out of huddles," Thompson said. "But then I guess fatigue kicks in and we start talking less and less and less out there. ... I know for me that's a big thing that I need to work on."
Jan 26: at Colorado 78-85: Colorado closes out Oregon State for first Pac-12 win
Pregame:
36. "It seems like we have to coach every pass on both ends. And that's really tough," Tinkle said. "We'll do it if that's what it takes. But when you get to where you want to be, you can hand that responsibility over to the team and they're the ones that are being vocal as far as calling plays. ... We'll watch and nobody will call to get us into something so we've got to yell something from the bench."
37. Tinkle specifically said he wanted sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. to become more comfortable with the freedom to call plays in halfcourt sets.
38. "I like to push the ball more in transition and try to get easy layups and force the defense to maybe foul you in transition," Thompson said. "I think the transition game makes the halfcourt offense easier, watching the ball go in the basket a few times."
39. "If somebody gets tired, that's where communication comes in," Thompson said. "We have to let each other know that we're getting tired, maybe slow the ball down a little bit or if one of the bigs are getting tired, slow the ball a little bit and work offense."
40. "We can't focus on records too much, but we got to use that as a motivator and be able to come out with intensity from the jump," OSU sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. said.
41. "We definitely think about it," Manuel said. "... I feel like we need to grab a win or two to get us actually going. We just need to taste what winning feels like. Once that happens we'll be able to keep it going."
42. Beavers head coach Wayne Tinkle said ending its conference losing streak would "hopefully spark the fire," and that he was okay with his players using their record as motivation.
43. "At this point, whatever it takes," Tinkle said. "We want them to be motivated, and again, they're young, so they're going to search for different ways. If getting that first win is what it takes, then I'm all for it."
Jan 28: at Utah 78-86: Stephen Thompson Jr. has career-high 30 in Oregon State Beavers' loss at Utah
44. “We're going through some tough times but we're staying together and we're continuing to work hard knowing that we're going to come out of it at some point," Wayne Tinkle said.
45. "Our motto is always to peak at the right time. That's what we're telling this group. We've still got time in front of us to play our best basketball. That's what we want to do when it gets to late February and March. Play your best basketball. That's what this group's focused on." - Wayne Tinkle
Feb 2: Arizona at Home 68-81: Oregon State basketball shows promise in loss to No. 5 Arizona Wildcats, but falters in one-sided second half
46. "There's brighter days ahead, that's for sure," OSU head coach Wayne Tinkle said.
47. "The first half was probably the best 20 minutes we've played this year," Tinkle said.
48. "We were getting selfish in the second half," said Manuel, who had nine points and six rebounds. "We were trying to do our own thing instead of sticking with the plan and that's kind of been our problem the whole year."
49. "Defensively we went away from the way we guard, the way we hedge ball screens, the way we send the ball into ball screens and they were just ripping through and attacking the rim," Tinkle said.
Loss to ASU at Home 68-81: Oregon State basketball faces grim immediate future following Arizona State loss
50. "It was painful," Tinkle said.
51. "There's teams that have zoned Arizona State and gotten to their shooters and done a nice job," Tinkle said. "And we didn't. We didn't have the same urgency. ... We went zone because we play zone and we didn't get our hands up into shooters first half. Second half we go man and we couldn't keep anybody in front of us without fouling. Anybody that wants to question what we're doing there defensively, it's not what we're doing, it's how we're doing it."
52. When asked about his team's defensive miscues, McLaughlin began discussing the lack of team communication before Tinkle interjected. "What were we supposed to do to shooters," he asked. "Get up into them. Make them drive," McLaughlin responded. "And I don't think we did that either."
53. "For whatever reason we got a little bull-headed and didn't get (the ball in the post) as much as we're supposed to," Tinkle said.
54. "We said in the locker room, we'll either address and handle these things," he said, "or we'll continue to be frustrated after games."
Feb 9: Loss at USC 66-92: Oregon State basketball suffers through another blowout at USC
55. "We've seen it all year and nothing's changing," said redshirt freshman guard Kendal Manuel, who had 11 points (4 of 10). "We just got to buy in and that's the main thing. Coach always says you got to build for the future. We need to actually lock in and do that."
56. "They hit five of their first six threes against man-to-man," OSU head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "And then we went zone and this same spot that kills us, this right corner. We couldn't get there and they hit a few more. ... Right now, defense on the perimeter is one of our weaknesses, whether it's man or zone."
57. "We get the fight in spurts," Thompson said. "We get it from certain people and then we don't get it from some people and it switches other games. We just got to get a collective unit and the whole unit has to fight throughout the whole 40 minutes of the game."
58. Tinkle said the problem has been on both ends. He identified perimeter defense as a primary weakness Thursday night. While getting out to shooters has been a challenge, keeping ball handlers away from the lanes to the basket has as well. On offense, settling for shots has been a common postgame theme.
59. "They just want us to attack and not settle for so many threes like we did on Saturday (against Arizona State)," Eubanks said. "Coach felt like if we drove the ball more, we would have tried getting it inside and would have kept drawing more fouls."
60. "If you're struggling shooting free throws, you just have to get in the gym and figure stuff out for yourself," said sophomore forward Drew Eubanks, who is an even 70 percent from the line this season. "That's what a lot of the guys have done."
Improved communication on the floor, getting the ball inside, and experience and depth seem to be the ingredients to success.
