The Beavers announced their 2018 recruiting class last November following NSD. The incoming class has 11 members with the possibility of adding a 12th player down the road with Lake Oswego INF Jake Dukart. Jake is coming to OSU on a football scholarship and isn't scheduled to play baseball in 2019.
A player to watch next year will be South Medford's talented OF, Jacob Melton. Melton will play the 2019 season at Linn-Benton CC, a program where Coach Casey has been known on occasion, to "season" a future Beaver for a year before bringing them to OSU. This same scenario played out recently with OSU redshirt 1B, Alex McGarry. McGarry was recruited at Vancouver's Columbia River HS by OSU but spent a year "seasoning" at Tacoma C.C. before coming to Corvallis.
If the Beavers recruit an athlete they like but he won't have an opportunity to play right away because of returning roster depth, they will locate him in a good Community College program where he will have an opportunity to play and develop, as opposed to have him riding the pine for a year.
Melton is 6-3, 185, throws left, bats left and is athletic with some power. He was a first team all state 6A outfielder selection in 2017 as a Junior with West Linn's Tim Tawa (Stanford) and Beaverton's Kevin Watson (OSU/Arizona D'Backs). In 2018 as a Senior, Melton is hitting .524 with an OB% of .661. He's scored 31 runs in 22 games, hit 5 home runs and leads the state in stolen bases with 21. He maintains a 3.5 GPA in the classroom.
We should keep an eye on Jacob next spring. PC will be!

I don't follow basbeball recruiting very closely, but how come Melton wasn't pursued more coming out of High School, or wooed by MLB? Late bloomer? Did he get recruited by others, but was determined to be a Beav?

Melton is a flat out stud... I find myself asking the question of how he compares with the great one from our program... Jacoby?
I could see it last year before he shut it down but he has gotten so much better even since then. You were right back in 2019 and I think this kids ceiling is so high!
I can't speak to the details of why he went the JC route, like you said... could have been our depth chart but the biggest change I see is he is adding muscle to that frame of his.
Time will tell if he becomes the next Jacoby but I see the potential. My analysis is that Melton has way more power right now than college Jacoby. And I think Jacoby was a little better in the Outfield with his route to the ball. But speed, arm, and batting average are all a push/the same.

Oregon State through the years has been blessed with many outstanding outfielders, most notably Ellsbury through Conforto through Melton. The player comparisons are certainly valid. However, the best may be yet come. Tyree Reed is rehabbing folowing knee surgery last fall. For an extensive period in 2019 and into the Pandemic year of 2020, Reed was a Top-10 player nationally (class of 2021) and held the #1 ranking with Prep Baseball Report for nearly a year. Reed's athleticism, speed and defense promise another exeptional outfielder in the Beaver Baseball program.
In terms of raw talent and accomplishment, no Beaver recruit at age 18 was ever at the level of current OSU commit, Gavin Turley. Turley is the Senior CF at Chandler, Arizona's Hamilton HS. Turley is a member of Oregonn State's 2022 Recruting Class but also potentially a first or second round draft pick in July. The prospect of him ever playing in Goss Stadium isn't very favorable. That said, until he signs a pro contract, I will continue to talk about him and hold out hope. The Hamiliton Huskies are ranked Top-5 nationally in several prep polls. Hamilton has five Power-5 signees in their lineup - Turley (OSU), 1B Zach Wadas (TCU), RHP Logan Soloman (ASU), RHP Cole Klecker (TCU) and SS Rich Cholowsky (UCLA). He is around Grade-A competition daily.
Gavin has helium - He is a Top-50 projection from Baseball America but after a explosive start (Hamiliton is 10-1) in which he blasted 8 home runs in the first 8 games against tournament competition from 4 states, his draft stock is soaring. Three of those "yard" shots measured in the 415 - 440' range. Scouts think it may be the best raw-power in the HS Draft. Turley gets + and ++ grades in other merics. He has warp speed with a 6.29 sixty with tremendous acceleration from a dead start. Last year at the Rawlings-Perfect Game East v West All Star classic in San Diego, he recorded a 97 mph throw from CF. He has a flawless and fast swing, his hand speed is 99th percentie and his exit velo on a HR hit against Chandler HS last 3 weeks ago was 110.4 mph.
It is too early for any comparisons to previous Beaver greats but I would suggest that at 18, Turley has the potential and results to date, to take a place next to them.

Love that upate.
I'm curious how many posters here watched Ellsbury in person at OSU and how they think Melton compares.
I am old enough and had tickets back then to watch Jacoby... it was a ton of fun and I still stand by my comparison. I don't know when it is fair to say Melton is the "next" Jacoby... Maybe after multiple years of success at the next level?

JE had a decidedly better read off the bat and took better angles to the ball in the field, but we will see with that aspect of Melton’s development.

Time will tell how he pans out, but I would also be shocked if he was any near as fast as Ellsbury. Ellsbury caught a deer. He ran a 6.34 60. Ellsbury was so fast, he could blow out the candle on the night stand and be in bed before the room got dark.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread but Mr. Boyd is beginning to be the next Jacoby. Leading the team in hitting avg and stolen bases.... playing great defense. Maybe Melton is a little more Trevor Larnach with better speed

Those facial expressions he had after the recent , unsuccessful, stolen base were pure comedy.

Did not play in 2020, got 73 AB last year....and now he is an integral part of the lineup. Hopefully a positive example for other highly rated recruits that it can take just a little time to reach an advanced level on a quality D-1 program like OSU. p.s. did I miss something about the status of (c) Wilson Weber? I realize that Logan and Smith are tearing it up at Catcher/the Plate...but is Wilson hurt? or simply a bullpen catcher at this point?

Wilson is red-shirting in 2022. It didn't make sense to use up a year of eligibility of two freshman catchers - Smith and Weber. Both are capable of playing PAC-12 baseball this year. Both can hit, both have plenty of power and both are good defensively. Weber may have the best arm on the team.
If Logan returns in 2023, we will see 3 catchers on the roster with Smith capable of playing some 1B, 3B and DH. Weber has some 3B versatility and he too can DH. Logan can also DH. Lots of position flexibility there and best of all, insurance against any injury. There isn't, if any, dropoff there. Beaver catching is in good hands, now and in the future with Marnell, Vandenbrink and Neyens on the way.

Funny how many great OSU OFs you skipped over in a 3-player list. OSU has had lots of great college OFs, but funny how quicly we can forget those special OFs who made the Bigs. Cole Gillespie (2006 Pac POY). Tyler Graham (caught a famous fly ball to end the 2006 season and had a cup of coffee with the D-Backs). Stefan Romero (3 yrs in the Bigs). Daniel Robertson (parts of 4 seasons in the Bigs). Larnach is a 1st round pick just getting started at that level. And when you hear Dancing Queen in the stadium, you know who has a chance at the Bigs this year or next.
