Abel has proven his last two games that he can go the distance as a starter. Today he was impressive. If we hadn't spotted the Cougs five in the first, he would have a W in the books.
I don't really care who pitches, as long as they get it done. Gambrell needs to go to the pen, until he demonstrates that he deserves the nod. It is crunch time. Selection Monday is three short weeks away.

Agreed. Gambrell's next start should be Monday or Tuesday vs San Diego.

How soon they forget... Grant is 5-1 and had produced vs better competition than Kevin up to this point.
Neither is a top quality D1 Sunday starter at this time. And, Grant has struggled as of late, but I'll put some of that right on the coaches. He had some productive outings where he was left in, ended poorly, and his confidence is obviously shaky when things begin to go south.
However, Abel is just as shaky... worse statistically. In fact in less innings has shown less. His recent positive outings are in relief, pressure's off, vs inferior hitting/ teams... 14 IP/18 Ks vs UP/ucks/WSU. But, lasted 2/3 inning vs ASU... 3 ER in 2 IP vs Zona. In fact about a 1/3 of his IP and Ks are from the NC UP/uck games and today.
Grant needed the 7 guys behind him to show up. He's confidence needed a boost, he pitched a bit timid, but well enough with any sort of D to survive... that was an E on Nick! And, as it turns out we get a W showing up in the B1.
But, no matter who is the Sunday guy, this team goes no where without Grant pitching well and Abel showing up vs the better competition (plus a couple others). I mean a 4.47 team ERA in Pac12 play is not winning a series vs many quality teams (along with 9 LOB per game... 185 in 21 league games!).

Excuse me but a Walk and 5 Line Shots in one inning has little to do with the D. Yep, the D Sucked with some pretty lousy throws. Anyone that has been watching has known the Pitching is the Problem with this team. Even LH has been Hit this year but is now close to last year. BF is BF! He either has them totally baffled or is hit hard. The Number 3 Guy has been the real problem. Now it seems to me K Abel has finally overcoming his D-1 Shock and is throwing some amazing innings. Any chance for Omaha rest on those two guys, Abel and Gambrell. They keep the Ball Down I like our chances. Keep the ball up and you get 5 runs in one inning. Also, why was Grant left in the game soo long? He was getting drilled.

I just don't see at this point how they will continue to run him out there as the Sunday starter. I say give Abel another try and be ready to come quickly with Mulholland if he's not used up in the first two games.

I wanting them to give Burns a shot. That guy has been money lately. Maybe is our Tuesday Starter against the Hole?

Burns tomorrow would be great. On the rise (IMHO, based on very recent performance): Eisert, Burns, Abel, Heimlich, Mulholland.

Of the possible starters Abel has the best potential, but control is the main issue and it appears that he is showing the best improvement. He has the resources to be very good, but only if he has better command. At this point maybe they should consider the 3rd game starter as "all hands on deck"

One the rise? - Heimlich and Mulholland are on track for all-American status, and have been all season. Can't get much more on the rise than that to start with. They don't belong in this discussion.

That's just the reality of tournament time and this pitching staff.

They may well need him in a regional. But he’s a mess. He has not been able to throw strikes.... and he’s loose in zone when he does.....don’t care about his record.... team has baled him out a couple times..... Need to look to Abel....who has not been real consistent.... maybe even Mulholland Move Pearce to closer. Think his makeup is better in relief.

Pearce's makeup has been great as the bridge guy to Mulholland, but it was also just dandy as a starter last year at SWOCC. The guy is a bulldog.
