I was chatting with some fellow alumni and we got into an interesting topic. We wanted to come up with the best roster we could put together using players from 99-00 to the present.
Let's see what we can come up with as a board. I'll put together another thread a little later for a pre 2000 roster.
Goals: 1) Name your Best 12 man roster made up of players from 99-00 roster to the present. KEY POINT - You're taking this roster through an entire season. So it may not be the "best" players talent-wise. 2) Name your 5 starters 3) Name your head coach also only using from the 99-00 season or later
I've gone ahead and put together the list below of all the players from sports-reference.com (let me know if I missed anybody)

This exercise is striking in how bereft of talent OSU basketball has been since 99. Since Brent Berry, nobody from OSU has gone on to have more that a sniff at the next level, with Eric Moreland holding the banner currently having played in the most NBA games of anybody since Brent (50). If you look at other Pac-12 teams, here's some of the options you have for building their alumni teams, looking across teams that had players get significant time in the NBA (i.e. 3+ season). Most of the conference have had All-Star talent come through. It's very tough to break through when your banner players aren't next-level talent.
Arizona: -Aaron Gordon -Lauri Markkanen -Rondae Hollis-Jefferson -Jerryd Bayless -T.J. McConnell -Stanley Johnson -Gilbert Arenas
ASU -James Harden -Jeff Ayres - Ike Diogu - Eddie House - Awvee Storey
UW Marquese Chriss Markelle Fultz Justin Holiday Dejounte Murray Quincy Pondexter Terrence Ross Isaiah Thomas Tony Wroten Jon Brockman Spencer Hawes Brandon Roy Nate Robinson Todd MacCulloch
WSU Aron Baynes Klay Thompson Kyle Weaver
Utah Kyle Kuzma Jakob Poetl Delon Wright Andrew Bogut Andre Miller
Colorado -Andre Roberson - Spencer Dinwiddie - Chris Copeland - Alec Burks
Cal - Ryan Anderson - Jaylen Brown - Allen Crabbe - Leon Powe - Tyronne Wallace
UCLA Russell Westbrook Darren Collison Jrue Holiday Kevin Love Trevor Ariza Norman Powell Kyle Anderson T.J. Leaf Kevon Looney Lonzo Ball Arron Afflalo Luc Mbah a Moute Ryan Hollins Baron Davis
Stanford - Brook Lopez - Robin Lopez - Josh Childress - Dwight Powell - Landry Fields USC - DeMar DeRozan - Dewayne Dedmon - Taj Gibson - Nikola Vucevic - Nick Young - O.J. Mayo - Brian Scalabrine - Jeff Trepagnier
oregon Jordan Bell Aaron Brooks Dillon Brooks Tyler Dorsey Damyean Dotson Joe Young Malik Hairston Luke Jackson Luke Ridnour Fred Jones Alex Scales
OSU Eric Moreland Gary Payton II Jared Cunningham
(complete list since '99 draft for OSU - not just those those that had saying power). Interestingly, all 3 of our NBA players were recruited by CR during that 19 year stretch. The only others since GPI were Brent Berry and Corey Benjamin.

I found this to be tougher than expected. I couldn’t decide whether I valued offense or defense more, which matters because I saw very few all-around studs. GP2, Cunningham, Phil Ricci and David Lucas were easy for me, and Lamar Hurd, Dino Tanner, Tres and Seth Tarver brought some unique attributes that would be must-haves.
I imagined a unit on the floor that included Payton, Cunningham, Hurd, Tarver and Moreland playing small- ball. What a suffocating defense that would be. Of course, we might not score much either. In some ways, I feel like Dino Tanner would be more of solid guard because he could do everything well and had nice handles.
How about an offensive unit including Ricci, Lucas, Tanner, Stephens and Tinkle? If I strictly wanted offensive splash, Cuic and Roeland Schaftenaar would be on it, but their severe defensive liability when I value D so much makes it tough. I feel like DeWitz had more all-around upside than either. My toughest choice up front was DeWitz over Brian Jackson. BJ had so much talent, but between terrible health and coaching, and terrible balance because he had the feet of a 6 foot guy and was 6’10”, I had to take the guy who - with a real coach motivating and challenging him (DeWitz) could have had a nice tour in the League, IMO.
All of that to say that this would have been my roster:
1 - Cunningham, Hurd 2 - Stephens, Tanner Combo - GP2 3 - Tinkle, Seth Tarver 4 - Lucas, Moreland, DeWitz 5 - Ricci, Eubanks
My starters: 1 - Hurd (steely leadership, great D and distributor) 2 - Tanner (Stephens and GP2 on for instant O or instant D impact) 3 - Tres (better al-around game than Seth) 4 - Lucas ( Instant O from DeWitz or D from Moreland off bench) 5 - Ricci (easy choice - this guy could have been sonething with decent team and coaching) Coach: Wayne Tinkle (not a deep pool for this - #2 would be Eddie for me)
Man, it’s easy to overlook the fact that we’ve had a bunch of talented kids in the past couple decades, but a lot of dysfunction and poor leadership.

However, what’s interesting to me is that even with the long list that a household name like UCLA has contributed, their list of bonafide stars at this point is pretty thin. Only 2 are perennial all-stars, and one other is an established star. Most of the others are guys that you see when their teams play and you say, “oh yeah, I remember that guy. Didn’t realize he played for (insert team)” Collison, Aries and Aflalo are fine, and Ball and Leaf have just gotten started (they could become stars). Not even the PAC 12 big boys have overwhelmed with next level success.

While I agree with the picks, in the history of OSU basketball there has only been a single player that accrued over 1000 points, 700 rebounds and 300 assists in their career (Tres could probably do it if he sticks around long enough). That individual would make my team, don't know who I'd bump though.

Who is the player you’re referring to?

Surprisingly lithe considering his size.

It was really tough to leave Burton off my roster. He, and Devon Collier were the first two bigs I left off. Barely.

Seth Tarver
Tinkle
Eubanks
D. Collier
E.Moreland
Joe Burton

Yes...it is F/C heavy (only 3 Gs), but I have not been at all impressed with OSU guard play (for the most part) for quite some time.
Coach: Eddie Payne or Wayne Tinkle.

I frankly wouldn't have thought of Joe if I hadn't run across his name the other day and Google him and found that fact. It's tough to ignore that kind of productivity. I pretty much only watched the Beavs his last year itr two, was busy in the evenings for several years prior to that. He was a solid player in many ways.

I'd agree with Steastape - seems you have to build the team think on guards to do well. I'd go:
- Ricci - Lucas - Tinkle - GP II - Deaundra Tanner
I'd be looking to win with defense and scoring in the paint with that bunch. with Tinkle, Deaundra and Ricci's mid-range to open up the rim. Depending on the opponent, I'd want Moreland to come in to defend the rim over Eubanks, and Nelson and maybe even Cuic off the bench if we needed more outside threat. It's interesting that Tanner shot 41% from three in '99, which is one of the better years for any of our volume shooters. Nelson was the best shooter that has come through - his average was hurt by how many highly difficult (and often ill-advised or desperate) shots he took.

Really surprised nobody has Calvin Haynes on their roster. He's one of the few guys we've had that I felt you could give the ball to with the shot clock winding down, and he'd be able to get a good shot on his own.
Starters Dino GPII Tinkle Lucas Moreland
Bench Clifton Jones Cunningham DeWitz Hurd Thompson JR R. Shaftenaar Haynes
I've got Eddie Payne coaching. I felt he was fired prematurely, and I want him to get a full shot to right the ship.
