Freshman year 65-66. Beavers were small and played tenacious defense. Led by Fredenberg, Eaton, Whelan, White, and newcomers Peterson and Gunner, they held UCLA and won. Both teams lost the following night, but the Beavs held to win the conference title. fucla had absolutely murdered the Beavs earlier that year in LA so that was a very pleasant surprise and won the PAC-8 for us that year. That was the year before Alcindor was eligible as he was a freshman. Paul Valenti was in his final year(s) too.

Feb. 15, 1974...when Bill Walton played for UCLA. The band sang "Won't you go home Bill Walton", to the tune of "Won't you come home Bill Bailey?". Freshman George Tucker hit clutch free throws, Steve Ericksen stunned Bill Walton with a huge block of a pass. I was high-fiving with the stranger next to me and the whole crowd was going nuts. Unforgettable.

What is sad is that the fun, anticipation, etc...of camping on the ramp to get into Gill will likely never be duplicated. Students today would not believe it

Remember a lot of great games at Gill. The Lonnie Shelton in your face dunk probably my favorite, but I always expected us to win, because from the first day on campus I knew OSU was special. One thing I still don't understand concerning Lonnie Shelton's last year he was declared ineligible due to signing with the new ABA (later to consolidate into NBA)later we had to forfeit some games that he played in. Prior to that a judge had issued an order from a lawsuit that OSU was obligated to play Lonnie. Later an appeal overturned this and we forfeited the games. What I don't understand was that we were following a court order to allow him to play and if he didn't we would have been in contempt of court.

Students today would not believe it I personally still get out there and wait for the doors to open. I was at Gill 4 hours before tip for the Civil War this year and in Tinkle's first two years there were lines to get in for almost every pac-12 game, and the line for the Civil War was out to the football by Reser. However, this obviously isn't the same as it was back in the day and your point is taken. I seem to be one of the few left that are willing to do whatever it takes to show up and support the team the entire 40 minutes

Students today would not believe it Togos and beers on the ramp... holding spots for food delivery while switching off who went to important classes to take notes... the rush for the railing. There were more students on the north ramp than typically attend games now.

Well, one thing is for sure, some of the memories are fogged by age, years or in many cases bias... LOL! They were great years to be a Beaver fan. I doubt they will ever be replicated, but just maybe..............

1978 or 1979 - I think it was 79. I wasn't one of those guys who camped on the ramp for days/hours to go to games but I did go to a few during my time at OSU. I was more of a, and still am, football follower even though we STUNK back then. Football games were an excuse to party and get hammered lamenting how crappy we were. But I digress, we we're playing UCLA at Gill and a bunch of us decided late, after some extensive partying, to see if we could get into the game. As we approached Gill I noticed a stream of coaches and personnel entering one of the lower doors so we tried to see if we could sneak in. We managed to get inside unnoticed and hid out in a bathroom until we heard the doors open and the crowd start to stream in. We got seats right above the railing at mid court and I believe we had some "travelers" with us so the liquidation process continued. GREAT game that went back and forth but the refs were horrible. There was an absolutely horses%#t call in the closing minutes that kind of screwed our chance to win the game. At that point I was drunk enough and pissed enough that I decided I was going to go down to the end of the court and cold cock the ref as he came off the floor. So I manage to position myself perfectly and as the horn sounds the refs head out the tunnel at the opposite end of the court. Probably saved me from jail time and a life of shame and poverty. I'm sure my details above are sketchy but it was a sketchy episode fueled by alcohol..... It was 79 Jon we were drinking in a U Haul outside Gill and spotted people walking in the side door. After hiding in the bathroom we ran out when we heard the crowd and sat by people that had been in line for 2 days-almost felt bad. That was the year we lost to Nevada in the NIT at home and I can still remember Edgar Jones quote after hitting the game winning shot. "I wanted to ram on the big dude (Johnson) but I knew a couple of seconds had ticked off the clock so I knew I could hit my J so I pulled up and hit my J". We graduated a year early next year they go 23-3 but lost to Lamar in the first round...

Early 1980's, Orange express years, during the introduction of the UCLA players the Beav fans would jingle their car keys. The colosseum filled with only the sound of keys. Our way of telling the Bruins they were cheaters and their boosters were giving them cars.
