15-12... UCD is athletic and plays solid "man" D. Also very active in their offense.
Good test vs an athletic looking team. Although we have some real silly unforced to's.

34-30... to's... not shooting that well... playing solid D vs skilled players that move well and not afraid to shoot it.
This team is what we need to get ready for Pac12 play... although WSU and UW are not as good as UCD... beat WSU in game 1.
The first half will unfortunately be good film for the UCLA's and Furds. Good "man" pressure really bothers us... on ball and the denial of the 1st pass. Unless we get better movement, execution we tend to force passes inside and don't get open looks.
We also are having issues on the D end keeping athletic players in front. Not sure we have anyone that can guard an elite PG. But, my real concern on D is still there. We let cutters free across the key... especially a lot of post cuts where we trail vs seeing ball and "man" and anticipate and jump/front the cutter and make them change their path.
Wasn't sure what you expect from UCD looking at their schedule/9-1 mark, but they are a good team. Thinking they'd finish in top half of the Pac12 the way they played the 1st half.

That's a solid quarter... 50-36... could be worse. Some easy misses and more bad to's.
But, better D combined with poor shooting by UCD on some good looks.

Ok... officially turned into a very ugly quarter... 2nd half even... 1:46 left... 54-43... 20-13 half!
Don't need a stat sheet to know fat too too many to's and poor shooting... luckily they were far worse and we did hit the boards.

We did separate ourselves in the third period. A combination of better defense and we took better shots.
This was a tough game against a fast and very physical team. They forced a bunch of it turnovers and we helped by committing a bunch more unforced.

Grymek was leaving their center open for three pointers and short jumpers... never going out to cover. We were lucky she didn't hit many of them. Against Oregon or any other Pac-12 school with a center that shoots well mid-range, that will be a big problem.
The offense seemed to be stymied in the fourth quarter. passing lanes were cut off and there was too little movement.
It seemed like the bad passes accounted for many of the turnovers. Also, Goodman had a tough time handling the ball. Lots of things for this team to work on.
It was good to see Corosdale continuing to contribute.

Personally I hope lots of opposing centers waste their time trying to shoot 3's and Jo stays by the basket and collects the rebounds.
UCDavis tried to go inside on Gulich and found this to be unpleasant, good. They learned to swarm her on the inside and managed to take her out of the offense, bad.
Mik got into some foul trouble and didn't play as much, bad. Because she didn't play as much she was full of vim and vigor at the end and scored the last two baskets while overall doing great D and making sharper passes, good.
Goodman make a couple of early mistakes and seems to have gotten rattled, bad. She didn't shut down but kept at it...good I hope. And she wasn't the only making strange passes. Lets hope this was a passing flu and they will all get over it. (yes, I like bad puns)
Taya had a great scoring spell at the beginning and helped keep OSU in the game, good. She had the strange pass flu also and had episodes of forgetting about the rebounding stuff, bad. But both of these didn't last and overall had a great game.
Maddie didn't show up on the stat's much, but her dribbling opened up things when Gulich was being hammered inside and she played spurts of really good D, good. The strange pass flu hit her hard, bad.
Tudor/Kalmer had a bad shooting night and the flu gave them a bit of a hard time also, bad. But they both had good shots that just didn't fall so there is hope this is a one game thing, and they kept at their D mostly and actually made a couple of decent picks.
KtMc made that shot at the half that juiced the team and crowd, and generally did all those support things that wins games such as rebounding and D, good. She also had a bit of the flu, bad.
Beav's learned to win when the ball wasn't falling. Good lesson to be taught.

It wasn't the flu. That team scouted us extremely well and apparently could call out many of our plays as we were running them. It took a while for our girls to realize that they needed to not just run plays but read the defense, too.
You could hardly ask for a better test before conference season opens.

Lots of interesting observations on this thread, so I'll add just a few comments without repeating too much of what has gone before...
This is one of those games that is a puzzler because your assessment of how well the Beavs played is greatly dependent on how good you believe the UC Davis team is. They are tough to figure because they looked good in spurts, had pretty good athleticism and had a very good scorer in Morgan B., their 6'3" forward-center who can shoot well, but didn't.
Cal Davis on offence had no interior game whatsoever. Some of their perimeter shooting bordered on panic as they unloaded from beyond even the NBA 3.... They had virtually no bench strength, and their starting 5 logged about 30 minutes or more each..... Bottom line, UC Davis is solid but not strong by PAC12 standards.
The Beavs are a System Team. That is their trademark and that is their strength. Right now the Beavs have no one except Pivec who is a consistent offensive threat when the system is not producing good shots. Which is to say, can create and score on her own skill set. That is going to create some really frustrating stretches for the Beavs this season. As of now, Tudor and KMac have shown virtually no ability to penetrate, create and score I really hope that changes in a positive direction....
Another thread is comparing Miller & Rueck. One commonality that occurs to me is that Miller's team would win ugly. Consistently. At the final buzzer you'd say "Gawd they played ugly." Then you'd spell out u-g-l-y. Then you'd look at the scoreboard and see that they won by 8. That kinda reminds me of the Lady Beavs and Cal Davis last night.....

Sounds as if we'll be fortunate to win five Pac-12 games. Sure hope we can.
