Dang... how many? which hand? As a guy who has/does spend a good amount of time with a power tool/saw in my hand I have never understood how this could happen, unless some intoxicants were involved.... Now let me go knock on every piece of wood I can find Shortcut, hurrying, no "push stick"... Richard and I shared a common bond in that regard. I lost the end of my right index finger to a skill saw in my early 20's. If you could take a video of everything you shouldn't be doing with a skill saw (using off hand, pushing with other hand, dull blade, wet wood) I was doing all of them simultaneously. Hit a knot and the damn thing bucked back and drug my finger into the guard. I looked down and saw this thing hanging from my finger and tried to pull my other hand away and goosed the trigger one last time and out it came all mangled up. It wasn't a clean cut and what was left of the finger was hanging by a thread of skin. My neighbor who was helping me that day (we were re-decking my dock) threw me in his Honda Civic with over 300K miles and drove about 80 mph without stopping for lights to the hospital. I'm lucky I survived the drive. They "amputated" it at the hospital after I had been sitting in the emergency room for about two hours. Eerie operating scene, the doctor ultimately was forced to retire after some alcoholic behavior, the anesthesia guy had a mangled hand and pretty much worked with one arm, and one of the nurses was missing the same finger. This was at the old Gresham hospital which had a pretty crappy reputation at the time. I was pretty crushed about it but in reality it doesn't really impact me that much. Other than having to pick my nose left handed I've learned to compensate.

Jesus christ that ER/OR sounds like something out of American Horror Story It truly was. A dark danky old building that I believe became a retirement home at some point. I don't know what the heck it is now. We rushed up there with ice on it and they took the ice off, gave me a pain shot, and then left me sitting there waiting for the surgeon (the alcoholic) to show up. By the time they got back to me any chance of life in the finger was probably gone. His claim was he had no bone to work with so it couldn't be re-attached. I wonder if he was out golfing and/or drinking while I sat there by myself for two hours. Classic line from neighbor who was a retired dentist. He came over after the incident as we were getting ready to run to the hospital and my buddy asked him to look for my finger in the saw. He sauntered over there and took a look and proudly announced "nothing here but hamburger". Great bedside manner

I just lost the tip of my left hand pinching finger while working at Smucker's cannery in Woodburn ala 1989. They couldn't find the tip in the Blueberry Grape real fruit Kellog PopTart filling. As the legend goes that flavor might of been discontinued. True story.
Bleed it!
Any more finger stories out there? -RWG

This is a classic where Richard showed up with an "orange" shirt at a Pure Orange function for the Insight Bowl. He was a recent bachelor and washed it with obviously with his tighty whiteys. Definitely Salmon color. LOL I miss him....

This story makes me laugh hugely every time Christmas rolls around, someone bumps the post, and I get to read it. Thanks! :-)

Always makes me laugh, which seemed to be Richards purpose in life, and now death, making people laugh. And he was oh so good at it. I only met him a couple times but he always struck me as the most genuine and giving sort of person.
