Weird. Just weird. I wish no ill-will on the kid but he and/or his family must see something that frankly I do not. Iowa for christs sake? I couldn't name a single Iowa quarterback in my lifetime off the top of my head. I had to google it just to think of ONE. Trivia question: CJ Beathard was drafted by the SF 49ers in 2017. Who was the last Iowa QB to complete a pass in the NFL prior to Beathard? Answer: Mark Vlasic. Over 25 years ago. Now this might be dismissed a little easier if we were talking about a school that had a long history of coaches who ran offenses that required a different QB skill set than the NFL but that's not the case here. Kirk Ferentz has been the coach since 1999 and they have and continue to run an NFL style pro offense. So - he's been there almost 20 years, running a pro-style offense in a P5 conference and has failed to develop a single QB that has completed a pass in the NFL until Beathard is forced to play by default on a winless team? Then there's the fact that Petras committed to CGA. I wasn't complaining but it surprised me for sure. CGA goes off the rails and a new staff is brought in that by all accounts, is infinitely more qualified to develop QBs. Petras response is to flip to a school with less than zero history of QB development? It's very strange to me. As I compose this post it just gets more and more odd... Iowa's OC is Ferentz' son, and the QB coach is the guy who was OC / QB coach for 13 years before spending a couple years on the Dolphis staff. So basically, it's the same crew it has been forever. This is the list of QB names they tout as coached by this staff (I think it was written prior to Beathard being drafted, thus his omission): Kyle McCann Brad Banks Nathan Chandler Drew Tate Ricky Stanzi James Vandenberg A real who's who of NFL talent. Compare that with this off the top of my head listing of who our 4 identified assistants have coached or crossed paths with: Derek Anderson (Riley, Smith, Michalczik) Matt Moore (Riley) Sean Canfield (Riley) Sean Mannion (Riley) Jared Goff (Michalczik) I'm not going to deny I was high on Petras, and it sucks to lose that sort of commitment. But at the same time, it's very curious. Unless playing in the league is not high on the kids list of priorities, I struggle to see how this is a good decision for him. Had he flipped to a P5 school/staff with some history of developing NFL QBs it would still suck, but be far less of a head scratcher. Maybe he just likes the school and coaching staff better. Who knows?

Dukart throws as good a ball as anybody. This is still a huge loss. This is the single most important position to have quality depth.

Had he flipped to a P5 school/staff with some history of developing NFL QBs it would still suck, but be far less of a head scratcher. He committed to GA, that right there is enough to tell you, you're overthinking the nfl prep angle. This could signify a mutual decision. JS said he was going to re-recruit our committed players to find out if they were still a good fit for us and we would be a good fit for them. If there is one position the coaches on this staff should win a recruiting battle for, it's QB. Petras had no offer from UW, CU, or UA(home of our current P12 coaches). So this could easily be about Iowa having built a relationship with him our coaches didn't have time to, or maybe our coaches don't see him being a perfect fit for the offense they envision and let him know that. He must have been high on OSU/Corvallis to commit. Looking at our roster, there's no better opportunity for early playing time anywhere else. So makes me think there might be a mutual thing going on here.

I’ve gone off on this in regards to recruiting before... bigger town, more importantly a 70k+ seat stadium that averages to near full capacity, a 100 million athletic department budget... the usual stuff. It’s tough to compete with that. That and he may have just liked it there.
edit: just saw a quote from Petras on why he flipped - “Primarily, I loved Iowa City. It’s a great place. It was much bigger than I expected. It really surpassed my expectations”

I didn't forget Browning - I chose not to go there because I don't know all the similar connections with the Iowa coaches. I don't think there are many since they're all related and/or have been coaching there together for 20+ years, but I didn't want to throw guys in unless I could find "comps" at Iowa. I clicked on all their offensive coaches and cherry picked names, looked for connections, etc. but as I said before, the staff is very homogeneous so I didn't see much.
Another example I left out - Lindgren coached Lifau who was a pretty solid P5 QB and a UDFA with the Bucs. I know this because Lindgren coaches for OSU so I've picked some things up as a by-product of that. I probably would not know about any such connections at Iowa so I chose to leave them out.

The football end of things at Iowa I can understand, but the kid is in for a surprise. Snow up to your behind in winter and in summer in 90's with 98% humidity not to mention skeeters & gnats all over. It'd definitely not as nice a climate as Corvallis/West Coast, I grew up in Iowa til I saw how nice Oregon is.

I blame it on Shasta beating him in the playoffs. Never wants to set foot in, or pass through Redding again in his life. Shasta. Hmmm - seems like I've been there.....hazy.

Somehow the Iowas and Wisconsins and Ohio States of the world get around the whole winter is cold thing. Somehow the teams in the southeast get around the it's hot and humid and you'll actually be living in Alabama or Mississippi thing. USC gets around the "you're going to get stabbed outside the Coliseum thing that rival fans bring up every time someone flips to SC. We just need some stability and some wins. I still feel good that we're slowly tracking in the right direction and we'll land the next Petras down the road.

I have never been to Iowa City... For those who have is it appreciably nicer than Corvallis?? When was Spencer's visit here? Odd...

If Iowa can flip him in 24 hours.... go flip him back! Seems like he is waffling... Quiet period starts in 2 days and the early signing period starts next week. They basically have today and tomorrow. Maybe if Sir Dennis dropped by his house and mentioned, 'I'll be in and out of Corvallis for the next four or five years if you have any questions." While tapping his NC ring clad fingers on the kitchen counter. He could maybe talk about a few of his college QB's: Craig Erickson, Gino Torretta, Derek Anderson and the brilliant offensive mind of Jonathan Smith whom he also coached. MB.

Also, I thought the consensus about Browning was that he's not all that physically talented. I'm not sure he's 1st/2nd round material if he doesn't have the size/arm strength/athleticism that the NFL is looking for. I'll admit to not looking at where future mock drafts have him going.

Does anyone know where the Lefty QB from Florida ended up when Riley jumped to Nebraska?
Maybe we could get him again. I recall he was over the moon to come out OSU and then Jackstick took away his offer (as I recall it) and Riley must have seen something in him the first time.

Program stability/continuity is so much more important than many fans believe, especially for a "have not" like us. The benefits of weathering some down years and maintaining a HC pays dividends. Ferentz has been at Iowa now for 19 years. Given events of this season that's a more important consideration than ever when selecting a program. Especially for a QB where fit in the system is paramount, you'd be foolish not to look at a program's commitment to it's coach before making what could be one of the biggest life changing decisions you'll make.
