Water balloons and bowling (the indoor alley kind) may not be too far away, but please park the "Hip Hip Hooray". Hip Hip Hooray should be a part of this program going forward, from now until the end of time. I mean, every school has their slightly hokey traditions. Wisconsin has a cheer that goes U Rah Rah or something like that. Minnesota has been chanting Ski U Mah for over a hundred years. I loved it when we had Hip Hip Hooray embroidered on the collar of jerseys and the slogan on socks. OWN it. I mean, you'd rather have big boy pants and war daddies and living in the hard? Because those were so awesome. I would rather have JS install a mantra that defines the attitude he wants his program to become. Did MR use H3 at Nebraska? If so, then it's his and not ours. I was fine with it when he coached here; don't have an issue with the "corny or hokey". Should JS want to use it again, I'll be ok with that--just prefer that he have his own. Now, if we're going to go retro, bring back Sailor Benny !

My only concern about bringing Riley back is encapsulated in this column. Namely, that the person Eggers called to interview for more info was Riley, and not Smith. The head coach should be commenting on his assistants, not the other way around.
I get it, Smitty is probably on the road and Eggers probably has Mike's personal cell number, but I just worry that Jonathan could be overshadowed by Riley no matter how much either works to prevent that. How often will Riley get called for an interview if Jonathan isnt available? It just seems like a needless distraction for the team and coaches. I also don't like the title Assistant Head Coach, but if Riley had other offers then it might have been necessary to sweeten the pot to land him. I do like that Riley said he wasn't looking for a job, which tells me this is really what Smith wanted. I just hope there aren't any unintended consequences.

Eggers did a big article on McGiven last year, that was mostly him getting quotes from McGiven. Asking Riley about Riley is perfectly fine. I'm sure he'll get a big interview from Smith on all the coaches soon enough. SaveSave
