Unless things have changed in the last couple of years, a team can have one head coach, 10 assistants, and four graduate assistants. No other coach can participate at a game, practice, or other organized activity. Only the head coach and 10 assistants can participate in off-campus recruiting. Exceptions: Strength/Weight Coach. A strength/weight coach can participate at practices and in the lead-up to a game. A team can hire as many undergraduate coaches that it wishes. I'm not sure what the assistant number is (I thought it was 8) but yes, it IS changing this very next season to allow 1 more spot. The current number was 9. It is increasing to 10 next year. I should note that the number of strength/weight coaches is limited to five. Only Evan Simon was listed as a strength and conditioning coach last year.

Angie Machado on the Dam Podcast yesterday called Keith Heyward a top 5 recruiter in the COUNTRY. I know it’s Angie, but for his recruiting prowess and his experiences, I think he deserves a shot at DC. Riley as an unpaid consultant on a temporary/as needed basis. I really respect that DE is mindful of not overshadowing niner. As far as institutional support of football. PLEASE email Ray and Barnes about increasing the allocation to football to at least 30% of the athletic budget. You’ll get a response from Ray, which I really appreciated. I wonder how much of that is based on Oregon's current recruiting class? Unfortunately, the place you're coaching at can determine how "good" of a recruiter people on the outside deem you to be. Not saying he's not good, just saying things change with different programs! Go Beavs! Heyward-Johnson was probably our best recruiter before he got paid by moving. He took maybe our best two in our prospective class with him to UW when he left. His rep has followed him and grown. He can coach too, and we have to have good technicians working with our kids. The ideal guy teaches and recruits at a high level. I think KH-J fits that. Not all former players who are coaching would be the best thing here, but I do believe that Heyward-Johnson, Bray and Riley would be great additions. Riley is an elite offensive mind, and he is way to humble to overstep his bounds. Let him coach a unit on the team, be a great sounding-board, and be able to leave it at the office so he can enjoy his family and not have to carry the burden of an entire program at this point in his career. I loved to hear Barnes say that we are stepping up the assistant coaches pool. His words, “we’re going to give Jonathan whatever he needs to get EXACTLY who he wants”

Love me some Riley, but you can't put him on the staff. EVERY paid coach on staff has to be hungry and willing to spend long days and nights on the recruiting trail. I don't see Riley (or Erickson for that matter) being at a place in his life where that's how he wants to spend his time. Bring him in to consult, if needed.

Compare this kind of plan to what they did att uo ? We are really stepping back, not stepping forward. Is the AD going to invest or continue to gut the program ? The search was like looking for a new home, then purchasing the one next door, then paying off the real estate agent that owned that same home. Now, for assistants, we are just going to sign up all our old neighbors.....cause they are such ' nice' people and they don't need much money. I have lost all faith and can no longer support this circus. I am out of patience and am moving on. I know I will get the snide comments from others - no big deal. I am not fishing for 'likes' or 'thumbs up' clicks, I am just expressing total frustration at what began as a wonderful opportunity with some 'timing' advantages and some actual interest. Since the direction was to tear things down, rather than make a statement... I can no longer support anything football. Some of you will say, ' we can do without your $25.00 per year donation. Well, if that makes you feel good, have at it. In fact, it is quite the opposite situation, but I am withholding money as a sign of total disatisfaction, not because I think this will hurt the program. This is OSU managing their own demise and highlighting their own failures. No matter how much money you have, or how much you put into the football program - I can see absolutely no ROI. I only invest where I can see progress. Don't let the door hit you on the ass. Good f%#*ing riddance.

I could see hiring Riley as OC or to coach receivers. Having all of the talent in the world will not help one iota, if you do not have a guys there who can actually coach them up. This is why Kevin Sumlin is looking for work. Last five recruiting classes: 11, 6, 10, 17, and 10. Last five seasons: 9-4, 8-5, 8-5, 8-5, and 7-5.

LOL... coming from you and your last posts as your swan song... think you pretty much hold those titles all alone. And, no one comes close. But, you're the type to: a) come back hiding under another moniker; (b) never come back to teach us all a lesson. I'm pretty sure everyone here chooses (b)... and we rarely reach unanimity.

I call BS on that line of thought. I think Barnes gave it his all in trying to secure the best coach he could and, out of the candidates he had the opportunity to choose from, Coach Smith is the one he decided would be best. And he hired him.
Your buying-a-house-from-your-agent analogy is ridiculous because it suggests something unethical. That's a crock.
And now you've decided that you're going to pout and go home because it didn't turn out the way you wanted...that's childish, even infantile. Here we are, at the start of a new beginning, and you're not even going to wait and see what happens. That is most certainly not the actions of someone who is a true fan who will support the Beavers as they try to get better.
Leaving? Good.

Talked to a great source at the press conference. He said CJS pretty much has his staff all lined up, just waiting for this weekend's games to be played for some of them and for the university hiring process to be completed on others. Shouldn't have to wait very long as they want to start recruiting next week, as he said.
This guy is pretty dialed in at a high level so I'd certainly trust his info.

They way he kinda smirked when he said "I'll be making some phone calls" then indicated he wants to be on the road recruiting as early as Sunday, but no later than Monday would indicate he has his people lined up and ready to go. There is so much talk about JS blew the interview out of the park, how he had detailed and specific plans. A huge part of me things he has been getting handshake agreements and support in the background for weeks now.

I believe it when they said niner nailed his interview and had a plan. Part of that plan I’m sure was who his staff members would be. Excited to see who he ends up getting, particularly since Barnes and Ray are loosening the purse strings on the staff salary pool.

How about we steal beau baldwin from cal and offer him a lot of money to be OC? That would be the best move for that position in my mind. Can we pull it off i dont know but we myneswell try. Then if smith fails we can hand the reins to baldwin (who I think would be a better fit for the job anyways)
