From what I've read about him, I think Cory Hall should let him play QB for maybe a couple games, cuz why not?? We have a 75% chance of going 1-11, 25% of going 2-10, so why not bench garretson and try out this kid who may be the bears very own Kalil Tate type of QB That the new coach could possibly build around.
Here is what the scouting report says about Kaleb Hayes. "Kaleb Hayes, a former quarterback, running back and wide receiver while at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, California.
The recruiting site Scout rated Hayes, who is redshirting, the No. 12 "athlete" in California. At practice Wednesday inside the Merritt Truax Indoor Center, he threw bullets, showed off his legs and wore similar armbands to Tate in order to mimic all elements of the run-first quarterback who has turned around the Arizona (6-3) season.
"You can tell he's a quarterback," senior inside linebacker Manase Hungalu said of Hayes."

But, if he is that athletic why was he a RS? Sounds like he could have contributed somewhere, somehow. And... I'm not going back to re-read recruiting info, but I've never really heard him mentioned, let alone as a QB with skills?? This past regime was a total cluster eff.

To be honest, if he's a good enough athlete, he should be playing DB now. We have a massive shortage there more than anywhere else! Go Beavs!

Well idk, I think they should put Kaleb at QB to make more plays to put more scores on the board, let the defense be dealt with for the next coach. If we're that short on DB's bring up some players from scout team, they may not fully get the Playbook, but hey, what is there to lose? We're getting new coaches soon anyway

We're getting new coaches soon anyway It's pretty common to have players who don't play the position, pose as opposing players on the scout team, happens a lot. I think having a guy lose his redshirt to attempt to play a position like QB, three quarters of the way through the year is a bit much. The problem is that the playbook would have to be so paired back, the Beavs would be very vanilla first of. Second, QB is absolutely the hardest position to play on the football field at any level. You are touching the ball, virtually on every play, setting pass pro, calling/translating plays, making reads, and then deciding when, where to throw the football...run or throw the ball away. That is a ton, to put on a freshman at the D1 level! I would be for running a play or two for Hayes or someone else at QB. A RPO, or option play to keep the defense honest but starting the game and playing most of the game would be pretty ugly (uglier than even having a guy like DG or even Moran in the game). Defensively, it would be much easier for a guy like Hayes to come in and play a position like CB versus playing QB as a true freshman. You can find ways to hide corners (Cloud, C2 even C3). Go Beavs!

Eh fair enough, maybe next year they can try an install Hayes into a QB and just maybe let him play CB this year. After all we do need more CB's cuz we get torched so hard back there.

I get what you're saying and it's not a bad idea if the staff has more foresight and coaches him up early on. I also wanted to mention that K Tate was also a 4* athlete. I don't put much stock into * ratings but he was a very highly rated and recruited player who is stepping up big time. Cheers! Go Beavs!

No burning of the redshirt but if he looks like a QB I see no reason not to see what he could do in spring drills. Andersen was so bad at identifying a QB its entirely possible that the best one he got was recruited as a DB.

Hayes does not want to burn his redshirt in November. Agreed, it would be counterproductive to the future of the team to burn this young man's redshirt year in the very small hope that it would make a difference given that he has no time with anyone but the scout team and there are only two games left this season.

Yes Hayes is a talented athlete from last years class. His quarterbacking and other skills were no secret and well known. I found out the first day he committed. His redshirt year is mostly so he can bulk up to withstand the rigors of college football. He came in at 171 lbs, which was expected. He was known to be a fast athlete with many skills, but was on the skinny side; making him more of a project compared to similarly ranked recruits. The fact that he focused on being quarterback of his high school team also contributes to needing a redshirt year (think Rashaad Reynolds type of development goal).

You're getting excited about a guy who completed 48.4 of his high school passes (although to be fair he completed 51.5% his senior year). There are reasons everyone recruited him as a WR or CB. Mason Moran had better passing stats and pretty comparable running stats.
