So my new theory is that Hodgins was unhappy with the number of two WR sets they were going to run and he complained about it, so the staff taught him a lesson, and now are taking the heat so as not to blast a kid for a temper tantrum. Thoughts? .....Or not. From Ken Goe's (do we hate Ken Goe?) practice report: OSU receivers coach Jason Phillips said Hodgins is healthy and is not being disciplined. "As a staff, offensively, we chose to go with two-receiver formations," Phillips said. "Isaiah is our third-best receiver. We've got guys like Seth Collins and Jordan Villamin. Seth is back." So, no mystery. "There was no suspension or whatever anybody is out there thinking," said Phillips, who also carries the passing game coordinator title. "I have no idea what they're thinking. There are no problems here. We're back to a three-receiver set. Isaiah will back for this week." Phillips said Andersen lets position coaches make personnel calls for their position groups. "Coach Andersen has done a tremendous job of giving guys the autonomy to make calls and the power to make decisions," he said.

There is only no mystery if you lack critical thinking skills, other receivers played so either he is really the 6th best receiver or the coaches decided to use receivers 4, 5, and 6 over receiver 3.

WR positions are about as interchangeable as OL positions. Sure, Hodgins might be "better" than Hernandez, but if Hernandez is the one that has been playing that position in that set in practice, then Hernandez is the one who will be out there in the game.

I really like Hernandez. I wonder what it would be like if we actually tried to get him the ball.

I've been a coach for 16 years. If you are using a 3 receiver set you are using a 3 receiver set. Not at the college level but I understand how you make a game plan. If you only have a "package for Hodgins" and we didn't use that "package"; that is different than saying "we used 2 receivers sets and he is our 3rd best receiver, he will be back in this week when we use 3 receiver sets" Alternatively, you could also say he is our 2nd best Z and our best Z played the whole game so he didn't get any snaps. That again is NOT what was said. Collins is slot not Z yet Collins as getting snaps at the Z. They used 3 receiver sets last week, Hodgins is the 3rd receiver in 3 receiver sets according to the coaches themselves therefore Hodgins should have played when they used 3 receiver sets yesterday. Either way, its bad game planning to leave your 3rd best receiver on the bench when you used your 4th, 5th, and 6th best receivers (by their own admission). When game planning, if you know the packages you are gonna use you get your 3rd best guy prepped for that package during that week. You don't sit him for your 6th best guy. That is just bad coaching. But tell me more about my lack of knowledge.

In addition, I don't really care how they justify it, if you are gonna burn Hodgins redshirt he should be playing every week unless injured or disciplined. If he isn't good enough to learn different packages week to week he should have been redshirted.
And the head coach should know why his 3rd best receiver whom he burned a development year on because he decided he needed to play isn't on the field.

So you are saying our "21" personnel, our two receiver, extra TE or extra RB sets includes using our slot receiver as the flanker instead of... the flanker? a standard two WR set goes: X LT LG C RG RT TE Z
QB
with RB and RB taking on a variety of formations around the QB. or an extra TE on the left side. Our split ends (X) are Villy and Hernandez our flankers (Z) are Hodgins and Hawkins our slot WRs, that should not be in this grouping are Collins and Bradford. So, either our two WR sets call for the slot to stay on the field, or it calls for the "best two" on the field... either way, Hodgins was still skipped over by other receivers any way you slice it. It still doesn't make sense. I am not buying this two receiver set, he was odd man out BS.
