Scary hit... but not illegal. Jake was diving, defender was going low to make a tackle. It sucks. I seem to recall an OSU defender knocked UW QB Jake Locker out the game on a similar style hit. Jake, a scrambling QB in his own right dove head first our QB defender, Al Alfalava (ninja edit), went low from the side. Shoulder pads to head. With the shoe on the other foot, we of course all defended our player. I am all for making football a safer game, and removing unnecessary violence, but sometimes bad luck happens.

I don't know what the coaching instructions were on that matter. In hindsight the coaching instructions should have been for Luton to always slide because he is too tall and skinny to protect himself at the end of runs.

Locker lowered his head at the last second, he's the one who created the helmet-to-helmet contact. Afalava's helmet was at chest level. And Locker was out of scramble mode. He was running down the sideline just like a regular ballcarrier. Afalava also got penalized in the CW game that year for a supposed helmet-to-helmet hit on Jeff Maehl, where he led with his shoulder. Even Fouts said the call was bad and that Afalava was essentially penalized for "tackling too hard."

It's like no one is listening at all. Gary has a very specific plan to follow and people don't seem to be paying attention.
