Which brings up the obvious question.
How many OSU QBs have thrown 47 passes in not only the season opener, but their first game ever QBing at the Division I level?

Unofficial list of 1st-time starters 1996-present: Darell Garretson 25/40 for 228 yards and 3 TDs. 6 carries for -3 yards. Marcus McMaryion 11/21 for 154 yards and 1 INT. 6 carries for 5 yards and a TD. Nick Mitchell 9/24 for 122 yards and 1 INT. 4 carries for -18 yards. Seth Collins 10/18 for 92 yards and 2 TDs. 17 carries for 152 yards. Cody Vaz 20/32 for 332 yards and 3 TDs. 4 carries for -2 yards. Sean Mannion 24/40 for 287 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. 2 carries for -12 yards. Ryan Katz 9/25 for 159 yards and 2 TDs. 3 carries for 2 yards. Lyle Moevao 10/22 for 109 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. 7 carries for -8 yards. Sean Canfield 8/19 for 87 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. 1 carry for -8 yards. Ryan Gunderson 22/43 for 175 yards, 1 TD, and 4 INTs. 2 carries for -21 yards. Matt Moore 26/38 for 367 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 INT. 3 carries for -8 yards. Derek Anderson 16/26 for 345 yards and 3 TDs. 3 carries for -13 yards. Jonathan Smith 17/58 for 3 INTs. 5 carries for -41 yards. Terrance Bryant 15/29 for 1 TD and 1 INT. 4 carries for 2 yards and a TD. Tyler Tomich 3/4 for 66 yards. 2 carries for 1 yard. (Tomich started with Tim Alexander at receiver, but Tim Alexander was quarterback for most of the game.) David Moran 6/22 for 1 INT. 15 carries for 7 yards. Jonathan Smith's 58 attempts stick out there. Smith came on in relief the week before to throw 17/32 for 469 yards (most yards ever for Oregon State and most yards ever allowed by Washington), 3 TDs, and 1 INT. Bryant threw 3/14 for 39 yards before giving way to Smith. 20/46 for 508 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT between the two. Gunderson's 43 attempts were in the Civil War. It is weird to see Garretson at 3rd on this list.

It was also not Garretson or Moore's 1st D-1 games with OSU either.

This is true, so strike the latter portion of my comment.

Wilky - I love that you do this stuff. or have it readily available in the WilkyLibrary or Wilkipedia.. or maybe you're just Rainman 2.0 and you just know these things, that's fun too. Either way, I love it because then I go "David Moran?...oh yeah... him." (not a good day first day on the job for Dave). I was pretty sure Tyler Tomich was going to lead us to the promised land, so my QB evaluator chops are probably just as bad as CGAs. Also - Nick Mitchell is now a linebacker at Southern Oregon.

So who was QB Kragthorpes first game here? Probably a lot of passes that game.

So who was QB Kragthorpes first game here? Probably a lot of passes that game. The biggest contributor was Erik Wilhelm. As a freshman, before being injured, he completed 60% of his passes with 9 TD's and 14 interceptions Many believe that had Wilhelm not been hurt OSU would have had a winning seasons or two. But the biggest surprise was in 1985 where Rich Gonzalez went 26 of 42 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown as the 37 point underdog Beavers beat the Huskies in Seattle.

Kragthorpe's first game at Oregon State was against the man that Dee Andros wanted to hire, Dennis Erickson, and the Idaho Vandals. Kragthorpe started Erik Wilhelm, who threw 27/37 for 257 yards, 4 TDs, and 3 INTs. Wilhelm rushed three times for -6 yards. The 27 completions and 4 TDs tied Oregon State records.

Wilhelm started the next three years. Rich Gonzalez quit football and Oregon State and played baseball at Cal State Fullerton after Wilhelm beat him out in 1986. Gonzalez' game against Washington was unreal, because it was very unlike Gonzalez' other games. Gonzalez' 298 yards was the fourth-most in Oregon State history. Gonzalez' first start, however, was against USC: 11/24 for 94 yards and 2 INTs. Gonzalez had six rushes for -61 yards. 33 yards in total offense in 30 touches.

Gonzales knocked himself unconscious, running into the left field wall in the first game of the 1990 College World Series, giving up a three-run inside-the-park home run in the process. Fullerton went 0-2.

I'm going from memory, but I think I'm correct. The injury was against and at Grambling State. (Side note, why the heck were we having road games against the then Div 1-AA?) Kragthorpe was mad as heck after the game regarding the injury. He said Wilhelm planted with his right leg, left-handed thrower, and a GSU defender who was on the ground lunged at the lower leg - which caused the season ending knee injury. Edit - I drove with two friends to LA for that USC game, leaving Friday afternoon. I'm not a violent person, but if i had a rifle, Traveller would have been dead. It was a very long drive home to attend classes on Monday morning. Another edit - Krap, this is bringing back bad memories. 55-mile-per-hour speed limit; going 65 and hoping not to get a ticket. Four hours at some rest area in the central valley early Sunday morning with friends that stink (as did I) trying to get a little sleep.

It was a very long drive home to attend classes on Monday morning. The game against Grambling was not a true road game. The game was not played in Grambling. Instead, it was played in Independence Stadium in Shreveport, about 1 1/2 hours to the west. Oregon State had agreed to the game in return for Grambling coming to Portland in 1975. The 1975 game was an attempt by Oregon State to appeal to more minority athletes, because of the continued fallout over the 1969 Fred Milton fiasco. Grambling beat Oregon State 19-12 in 1975, which was Andros' last year. As Andros had not been the coach for a decade, the game made little sense. Oregon State could have bought out the contract and scheduled someone else, but the administration did not believe they had the money to do so. Instead, Oregon State played Grambling in Shreveport. Because of low turnout, the gate was not as high as was expected, so Oregon State lost money on the game.
