This is in no way meant to be interpreted as any sort of slight to the young man...he has given us unquestioned effort and many valuable innings this year and last. Having said that, where he fits on our staff going forward is a legitimate discussion.
I am not convinced that he necessarily needs to be transferred to the pen, but I do think that the post-season rotation needs to be altered. There are different schools of thought here...one, you send him out in game one against what is, statistically, a team that the Beavs should have no trouble with regardless of our starting pitcher. It is a risk, but having Heimlich and Thompson lined up for the winners bracket is a massive luxury.
Another thing you do is go with Heimlich and Thompson in 1 and 2 and go with Fehmel/All staff for game three and forward.
Lastly, you make a change and replace him in the rotation and have him ready to give you innings if need be.
Assuming we get to a SR, I don't think there is much debate about how that will set up. Curious about everyone's thoughts...

I agree you have to change the rotation in the playoffs. Why increase the risk of playing extra games?
Might as well give it a try before the playoffs arrive.

This might not loom as a huge issue, but I think you run the risk of completely shooting Fehmel's confidence if you bounce him out of the rotation. He hasn't pitched well, but we've won 8 of the 11 games he's started I believe. The fact that our rotation and staff are strong enough that we can even discuss putting a guy who was a 2nd team all american last year on the shelf is pretty impressive.

Ideally, I would switch Thompson and Fehmel this week and see how that goes, but since this series is Thurs-Sat, you have to keep Thompson on Saturday. I say keep what has worked all season, keep Fehmel on Friday this week and let him get his confidence/stuff back against the light hitting Ducks.

I certainly don't think he needs to be on the shelf (that implies inactivity) but I don't think the status quo is a good idea either. In a Regional, game two is pretty much the most vital game and I see no circumstance where he would pitch that one. You're most likely playing the two seed, and a loss puts a world of pressure on your remaining arms.

For the last three series, you pick the Johnny All Staff you think will work against he team you are facing for the Saturday rotation. IMHO; Britton, Fehmel, Raz (or Gambrell), Max (or Mulholland) wins games. Fehmel doesn't start but comes in behind the starter in a potentially long reliever role, following a guy with a completely different approach as a pitcher.
Leaves plenty of arms in Tweedt, Hickey, Verburg, Eisert, whoever isn't slated in the power and closer slots on "Fehmel days" to take care of Friday and Sunday.
You get to the Regional and everything changes. Worry about it then.

I haven't checked the box scores to confirm but it seems like Fehmel gets into trouble the second time through the line up, generally speaking. If so... he is perfect to give you 2-3 innings of relief.

From what I have seen with Fehmel you can see in the first few hitters. If they are drilling the ball from the outset it is all down hill from there. He has to hit spots, keep the ball down or it is ouch. I think in the Playoffs we need someone else to step up. The sooner the better, just saying....

Somebody said the missing ingredient for the Beavs is an Alpha closer who turns out the lights every time. Maybe thats the guy. Maybe he will respond if you told him you need 3 outs and not as many innings as you can go

He would be completely against conventional wisdom, physically and with his lack of "stuff". However, mentally, a guy who came in as a highly recruited SS, and went to the mound when needed might just be the guy. Don't know him enough to know. Obviously he's a competitor and a team guy. Taking the ball in "that" situation, whatever it might be is different than starting where you know you're throwing to more guys. Some really good throwers simply can't take over bad counts and guys on and perform. Some can.

He was a starter and OUR Friday Night guy halfway through the season! He has had a rough couple of games, but maybe the coaches are trying to figure out why is not as successful as last year. BIO

I am just thinking, one ex outfielder's humble opinion of pitching, that perhaps he's "hit the wall", still growing up to that level where he can go a full season as a starter. Remember last year, at one point he was something like 6-0 and had averaged only 2 innings per win because he was coming out of the bullpen, and he worked his way up to starter and 70 total innings. This year he came out of the gate a starter and he has thrown 62 innings already with three series left. Regardless, gonna leave the observations and final decisions to Casey & Co

Hate to break it to ya'll, but Fehmel's days as a starter are done according to Eggers: portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/357923-237818-osu-offensive-talent-on-display-in-sweep-of-bears-I'm grateful for the guy and all he's done for the program (he was basically the only starter with any consistency last year, had a solid start to this year), but the Beavs don't owe him anything, especially if he's not locating his decent-at-best stuff. He's strictly a command pitcher, and if he's not commanding he doesn't deserve a role on a team that has legit championship aspirations, plain and simple. There are a lot of guys in that pen that can get the job done, and as we get closer to the postseason the rotation going to seriously narrow to the exclusion of guys like Fehmel who just don't have it. I think it's either Drew or Mulholland this Friday, possibly Britton if he can build on that small sample size we saw last week. If Max can pitch like he did on Sunday he can be that lights out closer you need.

The guy has thrown about 131 D1 innings recruited as an infielder. I think he threw something like 17 innings his senior year, 26 for his entire HS career. I believe he was the 9th rated SS in Cali in 2015.
He's been poor lately, but he's pitched 5 times the innings in college than he had in HS and take his overall stats anyone would take them...
14-3 / 2 saves... 10-1 / 2 saves, 2.31 as Frosh 3.23 131 IP / 115 hits 86 Ks / 40 BBs 37 app/ 17 starts
Not bad for a nonpitcher... not too bad learning on the job. _______________ 12-5 / 0 saves... 7-4 2.80 as Frosh 2.96 146 IP / 117 hits 124 Ks / 40 BBs 27 app/ 20 starts
Drew, recruited as a pitcher ________________ 16-10 / 4 saves 2.45... but over 3.5 each year previous
Luke ________________ 15-6 / 0 saves 3.11... 4.25 or more his 1st three years
Jake
Wow Bryce is just crap!
He's our best, most experienced option. You stick with him in some form... just like we did with Luke and Jake unless he's physically hurting. Every pitcher has a string of off games. He needs rest. But, if we're doing anything in the post season we need him.
