Andrew Nemec tweeted that talk between Beavs and Pili had cooled down quite a bit the last couple of weeks. He seemed to indicate this wasn't a high-need area, due to the recruitment of Evans.
I still would have liked to see him pick the orange and black... DT's don't grow on trees. Oh well...

Of course he did, duh!! I seriously doubt that we ever had a chance at all, I'm thinking that was all just someone trying to make positive press, I don't think he was ever really interested. He was seeing LA lights all along I heard, which of course could have been BS too!

Why were the Beav's never in the running here? The story I heard was he grew up in LA and moved up here for a year or two. he was SC/UW from day one. Tuipolotu Played for coach Hedrick at Central high school (Monmouth/Independence, OR). Coach Hedrick's son; Grant was a Boise QB under coach Pete. The relationship with Hedrick and Pete was a big influence on Marlon. The family has more interest in USC than Marlon himself.

Evans is a JC guy who has publicly stated he wants to play one year and go pro. Why would you back off of a high school DT who likely wont see significant playing time for a year or two because you have a DT for this year? Doesn't add up to me.

A lot of it has to has to do scholarship limits. There are 3 positions on the defensive line with 12 (10 on scholarship) currently on the roster. This gives you 4 deep not including the 1 or more coming in. You can only sign 25 per year. You have a lot more versatility with defensive backs, linebackers, running backs, and wide receivers to fill a variety of different types of positions. Defensive lineman and offensive lineman are more specialized positions and are not as versatile. There is such a thing as too many at these 2 areas. You should probably not be more than 3 (maybe 4 deep) in scholarships at these positions. I would have liked to get Pili, but there comes a time that you have to prioritize. Also, the staff made a visit to Alaska in December for Pili it is likely that the feeling they received from the visit was not very good, we really do not beat out U$C for many recruits. This numbers game that I described also illustrates why recruiting some more OL is important as we are not 3 currently deep in scholarship at this position, even with the incoming recruits. This would be another reason to back off a DL recruit so we have another spot for OL.
