McM gotta be #1 heading into spring, he will be a Junior and he is only getting better, and the possibility of him being a starter the next two years is encouraging and he has a high ceiling. DG is hot garbage and Lutton looks average in his highlight vid against some weak competition (lot of throws off the back foot, feet not set, not that many impressive throws) might work in JUCO but not the PAC.

I'm just saying McM ought to be locked in as #1 for Spring, which I think is pretty conservative. Here let me do this for you: McM, if healthy will be the first guy taking snaps Spring Ball 2017. That's a lock. It doesn't mean he starts in the fall but that's not what you are asking for, i guess. Correct, I didn't ask for him to be given the job in the fall, I just asked for him to be locked in as #1 in the Spring. From Eggers article in the Trib "Coaches expect it to be an open competition for the starting job, but McMaryion is probably in the pole position going into spring." Expecting it to be an open competition and McMaryion "probably" being in the pole position doesn't sound like a lock. I realize there aren't any direct quotes from coaches in Eggers article, but for a guy who has seemed to have proven it on the field, he hasn't been given much of a (public) vote of confidence from the coaching staff. He seemed to have been dissed pretty publicly by GA going with Blount in the BSU, Colorado, and Utah games.

I agree that "hot garbage" was probably uncalled for, but "struggled throwing the ball" probably misses the mark by even farther for a guy who was the lowest rated passer in all of college football at the time of his injury.

I do not get it. Right now 3M is considered our starter as much as Nall is considered the starter. Heck, 3M is considered our starting QB just as much as Garretson was at the beginning of the season when he was pulled in game in favor of another QB. The past is the past, the staff doesn't have to change how they handle any of the starters to atone for the past. 3M will really have to screw it up to be demoted before spring (i.e. break team rules, no effort in off season workouts). There is almost nothing for the coaches to measure to change this before spring. I am sure 3M is not worried about how the situation may be perceived right now.
This staff has open competition at all times. I like the toughness it brings when competition is emphasized (yes that means players get buried on the depth chart) and I like how constant open competition invites more commitment and involvement from every player. I look at pulling a player in favor of another compared to never benching a player to play another they both have positives and negatives. Benching players may downgrade the talent and hurt the confidence of benched players, but the opposite side is breeding competition and giving confidence to those that played less. You truly never know what you will find in the reserves until you try them, although you have a good idea from practice. Never benching players may keep the best on the field, but you don't know for sure because you have not tried. It gives confidence to starters, but very little to reserves. To be a great team starters and reserves need to be good. Because of this I never have problems with benching a player and trying another. I always thought that if the pressure of losing a starting spot would destroy confidence then the pressure of a close game would be even worse.
