With a mascot they had to originally steal from Disney! No imagination - maybe someone should link up to the infamous "ROBO DUCK" - now there was marketing genius at it's best!!!! Civil War week always brings out the barbs towards one's rival. Sometimes the barbs can stimulate an interest in facts: 1. The University of Oregon teams were called the Webfoots starting as early as 1895. 2. The mascot on the sideline up until the 1940's was in fact a live Duck (each named Puddles). 3. Oregon AD Leo Harris was a personal friend of Walt Disney. Leo ASKED to use the likeness of Donald Duck as the basis for the Duck Mascot. The agreement was a handshake among friends. 4. Following Walt Disney's death in 1966, the corporation worked out a formal agreement with U of O for the use of the likeness. The agreement was structured to limit distribution of apparel and other merchandise with the likeness to Oregon and limited areas beyond (e.g. Vancouver, WA). 5. The current Duck differs from the image of Donald Duck in multiple facets of his appearance. 6. The new "Duck" logo is a stylized version. And is consistently referred to as "Puddles", both in use on uniforms and on merchandise. Not sure how you can call that "stealing". And a lack of imagination to use Donald Duck as the basis for the mascot turned into one of the most recognizable sideline mascots in college football today. Re-branding the University logo to the "O" (outline of Autzen with the shape of Hayward Field track in the middle) has also produced one of the most recognizable university logos. Insulting Robo Duck is of course well-deserved.

Insulting Robo Duck is of course well-deserved. First... you lose any sense of respect and integrity with the "one of the most recognized"! Simply not true. Most eastern fans have no clue and most fans live in the east. Hell, most eastern fans don't know there is two major universities in Oregon let alone their mascot... especially the "O". 2nd... the "university of nike" lost any sense of national respect around 1996 when uncle Phil started his climb for institutional control. In academic (including UofO's own) and athletic circles whoregon is the poster child of what had gone wrong with college athletics. Other universities have followed, but it was whoregon and their fans that sold their souls first. So... you'll always be #1 in something. Just not in the major sports you so dream of.

Phil Knight has donated alot of money to facility development. Pat Kilkenny donated a bunch of money to bring back the baseball program. The Moshofsky family donated several million dollars for the indoor. practice facility. Not sure how those donations are Oregon fans selling their souls. Yes, Oregon ATHLETES were among the first that Nike tapped to help design new uniforms in the late '90s and early '00s. The development of the uniform technology was going to happen whether Oregon was involved or not. If you think the proven marketing success of having new uniform colors and designs hurts college football, (when uniforms are part of the marketing agreement with the sports apparel sponsor - and therefore included in the contract as compensation to the university for the marketing rights - and therefore contribute zero cost to operating the athletic department), then I am guessing that OSU fans have been happily selling their souls to Nike for nearly two decades now. >> I suppose the fact that the number of Oregon donors rose to a point that rivaled many other schools in the Pac12 is somehow "selling out" - or maybe it is the result of fans wanting to support the school's athletic programs because the entire department has raised the winning bar. Funny that programs like Texas, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State and others have always had huge Athletic Department budgets (long before Phil Knight starting donating his money), but somehow Oregon has been the impetus for the growing budgets?? Maybe Oregon simply figured out how to market the school and hire good coaches that created winning teams that fed the support. So... you'll always be #1 in something. Just not in the major sports you so dream of. >> Oregon held the #1 spot in college football in major polls for several weeks in a row in 2010. >> Oregon was the first Pac12 team to qualify for the College Football Playoffs, and the only team to-date to win a playoff game. >> Oregon's basketball team made the Final 4 in April 2017. >> Oregon's other sports have brought home NCAA titles in recent years (Track, Cross-Country, Golf) I guess the conclusion is Oregon will always have a chance to be #1 in some sport - including the major sports.

Good to know!2nd... the "university of nike" lost any sense of national respect around 1996 when uncle Phil started his climb for institutional control. In academic (including UofO's own) and athletic circles whoregon is the poster child of what had gone wrong with college athletics. Maybe Oregon simply figured out how to market the school and hire good coaches that created winning teams that fed the support. >>> Definitions three and four:
3. A person, entity, or organization who betrays a cause, organization, or the like; traitor. 4. A person, entity, or organization who compromises his or her personal values, integrity, history, talent, or the like, for money or personal advancement.
There are several causes and/or personal values that Oregon could be said to be betraying for money: America First and Made in USA come immediately to mind. Phil Knight has worked hard to outsource well-paying American jobs to Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. He has transferred Nike intellectual property to Bermuda and Holland to avoid paying American taxes.
Human rights would be another cause and/or personal value that Oregon could be said to be betraying for money. 12-year-olds work in his factories 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Knight has worked hard to plunder the wealth of this nation and simultaneously exploit the poor of the world to enrich himself. The University of Oregon's acceptance of the hundreds of millions of dollars that he poured into the university is an explicit endorsement of his global actions. Thus, the University of Oregon are sellouts by definition.
Further, you cite to Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Texas as schools who "sold out." However, all four have strongly kept hold of their traditions, even while generating huge athletic revenues. Oregon, on the other hand, sacrificed pretty much all athletic traditions in order to attempt to generate larger athletic revenues.
Finally, by hiring Chip Kelly and allowing him free reign to sleep with recruits' mothers, etc., the University of Oregon has turned a blind eye to its own integrity, both as an athletic department and as an institution of higher education.
The University of Oregon was once a proud program, which has sold out who it is and what it believes in search of occasional wins in major bowls.
So... you'll always be #1 in something. Just not in the major sports you so dream of. >> Oregon held the #1 spot in college football in major polls for several weeks in a row in 2010. >>> And if the season had ended before Oregon's pyrrhic Civil War victory in 2010, that might mean something.>> Oregon was the first Pac12 team to qualify for the College Football Playoffs, and the only team to-date to win a playoff game. >> Oregon's basketball team made the Final 4 in April 2017. >>> Oregon State had two Final Four appearances in a 14-year period. It took Oregon 78 years for its second appearance. This just in, the Ducks in the final four again in 2095! Oregon State still has more conference championships and Tournament appearances. Further the Beavers still have 83 more wins in program history than the Ducks.>> Oregon's other sports have brought home NCAA titles in recent years (Track, Cross-Country, Golf) I guess the conclusion is Oregon will always have a chance to be #1 in some sport - including the major sports.
