I won a huge football bet with UTSA in (I think) 2014. As thanks, I told myself if I was ever in San Antonio, I'd buy a UTSA shirt. Fast forward, April 2018 - went to the UTSA bookstore to buy the shirt. While in the store a young clerk asked me if I needed help. Told her the story about the bet, and she hung out with me for maybe 15 minutes chatting. I'm sure she saw me as a kindly grandpa-type guy but I pretended it was like someone in whom she was interested. Anyway, I'm all for UTSA. maps.app.goo.gl/McLby8AxQLKkENrF8yea, the baseball field is not great.

Good thing we aren't adding Pepperdine then. I almost went to Pepperdine. Came down to OSU and Pepperdine. At the last minute I decided that perhaps going to a school just because it was in Malibu was perhaps not the best choice. Now that I see you went there, I feel comfortable knowing I made the right choice. San Marcos is almost equidistant from San Antonio and Austin. If we're going to play the "But UTSA is in San Antonio proper" game, then OSU is in Corvallis and can't count Portland. Texas St also has slightly higher enrollment. Texas St also has had more students actually see a football team playing there (as they've been playing longer). And, again, to top it all off, Texas St could get us to 8 immediately at maybe less than 1/3rd of the cost. Corvallis is know as 'The Malibu of the Willamette Valley' Or The Malibu Rum…

For all intents and purposes UFCU was built in 2012 as it was nearly torn down to the studs. Adjusted for inflation there's been somewhere around or even more than $150M spent in and around the football facility itself over time. To build from scratch in 2025 starting with securing a vacant piece of raw land I would expect the total cost to be much more exorbitant than even that. Perhaps if you are able to look past UTSA's AAU basketball arena, then look no further than their baseball field which is commonly referred to as the bird bath. That's not hyperbole either because it literally looks like an inner city apartment complex was bulldozed behind someone's backyard and a Baby Ruth facility was just thrown from the sky. From what I have read, they just got rid of the track, added seats in the North End Zone, added to the press box, and added two jumbotrons to the South End Zone. Both the East and West sideline seating remained virtually unchanged at Bobcat Stadium. The dichotomy between the old East and West parts of the stadium and the much newer North End Zone is very jarring, when there are no fans in the seats. Lol. Yes, Texas State's baseball stadium is better than UTSA's baseball stadium. UTSA's basketball arena can be worked around, as mentioned in my post, either by working the Alamodome or by working with the Spurs.

If you went to a high school with a basketball arena as nice or nicer than UTSA's, you went to a much nicer high school than mine. Also, I went to Pepperdine Law School and played at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Convocation Center is much nicer than Firestone Fieldhouse. Neither approaches Gill Coliseum, but I think that you are going to get a good flavor of what is really out there for basketball beyond the Power Five Conferences this year playing all of the WCC teams. The Alamodome is 30 years old, and I fail to see why that matters, when Oregon State is playing in a smaller 70-year-old stadium. Plus, the Alamodome has been upgraded seven times since 1993. More suites than Reser. More luxury suites at the Alamodome. More club level seating at the Alamodome. And that is also to add to the fact that UFCU Stadium in San Marcos is 45 years old and nowhere near comparable to Reser Stadium much less the Alamodome. Plus, to come back to your basketball knock, the Alamodome can be configured for basketball should the need arise. The Spurs played at the Alamodome until 2002. The Alamodome has already hosted four Final Fours in the past 30 years and is scheduled to host the Final Four just this year. And UTSA may also be able to play at Frost Bank Center (the Spurs' new arena), if necessary as well. Texas State is in no way comparable to UTSA in term of facilities or market. San Antonio is also night and day better than San Marcos in pretty much every way that immediately comes to my mind. History, architecture, etc. Ridiculous! Texas State might have an argument about recent success, but the Pac-12 would be foolish to seriously ponder selecting Texas State, if UTSA is also available. Good thing we aren't adding Pepperdine then. I almost went to Pepperdine. Came down to OSU and Pepperdine. At the last minute I decided that perhaps going to a school just because it was in Malibu was perhaps not the best choice. Hanging out with Jeff Goldblum, Steven King, Leelee Sobieski, Steven Spielberg, and Brent Spiner. Getting to ride on James Bond's boat. (If you can believe the captain.) Entertaining. I lived a year in Santa Monica near where Jessica Biel was living at the time. I got to hang out with Mischa Barton back when that meant something. Then, I moved to Calabasas. I never saw the Kardashians, but I did get to chat up the future Ambassador to Malta, who was sleeping (although he insisted that he wasn't sleeping) on a bench at a strip mall. Very different than Corvallis. Your San Antonio and Austin conversation is just bizarre. It would make sense to claim both, if there were not already bigger and better universities in both cities, but........... The University of Texas is in Austin and UTSA is in San Antonio. So, the idea that Texas State, a school outside of both cities with bigger and better universities already inside of those cities, can claim either Austin and San Antonio much less both Austin and San Antonio seems........like..............a stretch. That's like saying that Fresno State is a shoe-in to get the majority of the Bay Area and Los Angeles markets. Or, heck, why even waste our time with Texas State? Why not invite Florida Tech in beautiful Melbourne, Florida? We can count on it to get the Jacksonville, Miami, and Orlando markets! Genius. Even cheaper than Texas State! The mighty Panthers are D1 ready. Grab up Miami of Ohio! Nail down both Cincinnati and Columbus. Or Akron! Cleveland and Columbus on lock. Or Bowling Green and Toledo! Columbus and Detroit! Oregon State is the closest FBS university to Portland, a city without an NFL football team. So, trying to analogize Oregon State to Texas State is an invalid comparison. I just have to reiterate that I disagree with any assertion whatsoever that Texas State gets you Austin or San Antonio much less both.

And, again, to top it all off, Texas St could get us to 8 immediately at maybe less than 1/3rd of the cost. Corvallis is know as 'The Malibu of the Willamette Valley' Slightly higher enrollment is an understatement. Until the last couple of years Texas State was outpacing UTSA in enrollment 10-15K over the last 4-5 decades (until big daddy an Austin started making false promises to accept their students that never happened, but enrollment skyrocketed). Texas State has 300K living alumni and students. UTSA has 190K living alumni and students, which means far fewer to give back to NIL and build facilities. That's rather significant when you compare living alumni across other large schools. Texas State's freshmen class straight out of high school this fall was 8,200 compared to UTSA at 6,000. 37% larger quite a lot when you consider the future people that will turn on a game. When I graduated high school I kid you not UTSA's admittance rate was around 99% and Texas State's was high 68%. Imagine being associated with that kind of sub-bar Boise reputation. 1/3 of the cost, I've heard Texas State can walk for as low as $2M but the commissioner may just let them walk for free because they are a far west geographic outlier, and it would probably save the other 13 schools that much just in a year of travel to San Marcos. So yeah compare that to UTSA's $27 total cost to leave that the AAC might negotiate a little lower but not by a lot. Try a 10th of the cost.

San Marcos City limits are 13 miles from where Austin City limits start. San Marcos City limits are 23 miles from where San Antonio city limits start. Nothing you just said is in any way coherent or comparable even if you were just being obnoxious. While none of them share a county, the county San Marcos is in (Hays) is literally adjacent to the counties that Austin and San Antonio are in. There are are like 3/4 of a million people just in between the drive to Austin and San Antonio alone. The fact of the matter is you literally know not a thing about UTSA in reality. 15 years ago adding UTSA would have been like adding Portland State and nothing has really changed other than hiring a head football coach that the worst Texas State university president and AD in school history didn't even bother to bring in for an interview when everyone in the stands had been shouting for it for several years before he showed up there.
