Someone explain to my why Utah State is favored over Nevada-Reno. Logan is effectively SLC lite... Men's Bball is good. and the University itself is an R1 research institution that is well above Boise State and Fresno State and quite frankly SDSU and CSU as well. They are much more truly OSU's academic peer. They are not bad, they are second fiddle to Utah for sure, but it is not the worse. I will feel a lot better to wake up to confirmation of UNLV though.

I'm going to go with men's basketball. Investment in the total athletic program. USU has spent millions on facility improvements and program support in the past decade, a process started by Barnes when he was the AD there. And a much-larger TV market. Nevada's football stadium would embarrass any number of Texas high schools. I remember going to a Beaver game there...what..20 years ago? It may be a POS now but back then? It was a MAJOR POS...like playing on asphalt...

They painted the dirt green, because the grass had died on parts of the field. When the game was close I remember one loud-ass Nevada fan...Finally shut up once the outcome was apparent.

If we can get UNLV and Gonzaga I am very happy. Solid schools all in the west. No long travel and a decent recruiting benefit especially for non-football sports.
Prospective S/A: I really want to play college sports and get an education to boot
Mom and Dad: Glad you are making education as important as your sport
Prospective S/A: Yeah the travel at schools x,y,and z will make it hard to study
Mom and Dad: Well OSU is in the Pac12 which is in the Pacific and Mountain time zones, so there won't be any long trips
Prospective S/A: Yeah Sign me up!

They are 3rd fiddle in Utah, behind the utes and byu But that's five or six fiddles higher than UTSA and Texas State are in their state. Utah has a population of 3.5 mil, Texas 31 mil. Probably more high school football players in Dallas then all of utah.

Not for baseball. That’d only be 6 teams. Maybe they only need 6 for baseball... Yep, but I was referring more to the strength of the conference for recruiting.

This would be possible because the Pac-12 already has an auto bid, keeping the at-large invitees at the same number (after a two-year, one-team increase in 2025 and 2026 because there is no Pac-12 auto bid). We could have a 6-team league, play 3-game H&H (30 games, no tournament) and still have room for 24 non-league games to build our SOS.

If they get to six with Gonzaga and UNLV, you could have a Pac-12 North and a Pac-12 South. You play each of the division members home-and-home. Play one of the other division teams home-and-home and then play one home and one away. If the numbers make sense (and they usually do), play a Tournament. Four teams or six teams. Who cares. With 24 conference games. You get as many as 32 nonconference games. Two weeks of extra nonconference play usually beats six extra games against Fresno/San Diego State/UNLV. But others' mileage may vary. In theory, you can play as few as 21 conference games, but 24 is generally fairer in my mind.

With your attention to detail, have you thought about becoming a conference scheduler as a 2nd career?
