In 2010, we witnessed the "Launch Angle Revolution" begin - hitters sacrificed contact for SLG. Three years later, the "Velo revolution" began with 102 mph heat and 92 mph sliders. Is it any wonder we are seeing more punch outs than ever? In 2023, the MLB K rate was 22.7% with the Astro's pitching staff whiffing 28.9 % of opposing hitters. The number-crunching Analytics Departments will tell you strike outs are fractionally less desirable than a ground out or fly out, but superior to a DP ball. The game has changed. I understand that a ground out is only fractionally better than a strikeout. I do NOT understand how a ground ball isn't extremely better than a strikeout. A ground ball has a reasonable chance to be either a hit, OR an out. A strikeout has an EXTREMELY minimal chance of resulting in getting on base. I can agree that an out via fly ball or ground ball isn't much worse than a strikeout, but what is league BABIP? It's between 27 and 31%. Doesn't that mean that any ball in play is 27-32% more likely to be a hit than a strikeout? Different types of outs? FO=GO=K? Agreed, not much different. Different types of batting outcomes? FB>GB>>>>>>K. The math seems to check out to me, unless we expect any K that turns into a FB or GB = .000 BABIP. Yep... a K basically requires no defensive play while a groundout requires (3). Analytics is a just a part of baseball but in no way creates outs as "equal" in terms of defensive pressure. Simplistically put you don't see too many E's or guys reach base via the K! And, if your K rate is above 30% it's an issue... 40%+... yeah no big deal! 🙄

The Home Run is the most important offensive weapon you have. When Earl Weaver was at Baltimore, he said " give ne a 3 run run homer every day and I'll win 120 games". The Home run is also glamorous - it attracts fans as baseball learned during the Mantle - Maris period and the McGuire - Soto period. Fans like to see towering shots that leave the yard. The Purist is thrilled watching a 1-0 pitching duel, the new fan is bored with it.
Baseball has evolved into a different game. Where are Maury Wills, Ricky Henderson and Lou Brock? Where are Spahn, Sain and 2 days of rain? Where is Nellie Fox "taking two, shortening up and taking it to righ?". ....sigh.

Good stuff Busy Beavers this summer. Big question - Where is Krieg this summer? Krieg has not logged any statistic in any major Summer League program. Unless he is someplace under-the-radar, it would seem that he is either rehabbing or is working to refine some specific skillset for Fall Ball. Krieg’s dad told us he was going to stay home and work with a local trainer.

The love of the long ball... the 11 Ks in 52 ABs is an improvement. Yet the fielding... .667 with 5 Es in 15 chances at 3B. More games as a DH than 3B

James DeCremer was named the South's top prospect at the WCL All-Star Game in Bellingham. He didn't have a great outing but the prospect evaluation is made during pre-game workouts for the scouts.
As for Carraway, Cape Cod League teams generally play on high school fields so the infielders are not in great shape. But still, five errors in 15 chances is a lot.

Kid from Nebraska gets more time at 3B, think he's fielding at .930 "ish". I was hoping Trent was going to transition to 1B this summer.

Maybe left field (Greg Luzinski played there for a decade). Right field if he has a big arm. Am I remembering correctly . . . he was a high school shortstop?

Easton Talt with a 2-Run HR last night in Bend against the Corvallis Knights (off Payton Riske, University of Utah). Talt's first HR of the summer.
He's played with great energy this summer. BA is only .230 but his OBP is .467. He's 17 of 21 on stolen base attempts.

In other news, Trent Caraway (one "r") was named to the Cape Code All-Star game this upcoming weekend. Although, and this is such a sad statement about everything, the official Cape Cod website lists him as playing for Oklahoma State.

Lengthy, informative interview. At about 19:53 Gavin says "We already have our schedule set for next year" in the context of it not being hard to find good teams that want to play OSU. in 2025.
