and the margin tightens. Beavs need to figure out how to hit a secondary pitch in the zone. If they can't do that by now, they're not going to do it in the next week! What do you think they're going to see from now on, going forward?

Wazzu lost six of the last seven in Pullman and 16 of the past 20 overall. The Cougs have lost six straight conference games and 10 of the past 11. The Cougs have won one series in the past eight weekends, a random sweep against Arizona State. If the Cougs win this series, the Beavs have serious problems. We SHOULD go up there and win the series easily, but I'm not betting on the Beavs away from Goss right now. Do you know if Wazzu has good junk throwers? They will by the weekend!!

WSU should be a sweep, but WSU is not going to play dead. They are 4-5 at home with (3) one-run losses... Utah 1-2, ASU 3-0, Cal 0-3... and averaging about 5 runs per at home. No way that their pitching should hold OSU even with 10Ks per to 5 runs or under. BUT??
Conference only stats... OSU (20 games) WSU (21 games) BA .267 (6th) .257 (8th) Hits 176 (9th) 188 (7th) 2B 35 (7th) 35 (7th) HR 38 (2nd) 12 (11th) OBP .389 (2nd) .340 (9th) SLG .505 (2nd) .362 (11th) K 193 (7th) 193 (7th) BB 122 (1st) 76 (11th) R 137 (4th) 104 (11th)
IP 175.1 (10th) 185.1 (7th) Hits 160 (1st) 203 (5th) H/9 8.3 9.8 Runs 101 (2nd) 133 (7th) ER 83 (2nd) 103 (6th) ERA 4.26 (2nd) 5.63 (7th) WHIP 1.29 (1st) 1.48 (4th) BB 66 (3rd) 71 (4th) K 173 (7th) 159 (8th) K/9 8.88 (5th) 7.72 (7th) HR 20 (2nd) 23 (4th)
WSU's starters in conference play: Grant Taylor (Sr/RHP) 7 GS... 2-2... 44.1 IP... 37 H... 16 BB/52K... 10.56 K/9... 3.45 ERA Connor Wilford (Sr/RHP) 7 GS... 1-5... 41.1 IP... 49 H... 12BB/33K... 7.19 K/9... 4.57 ERA Spencer Jones (Sr/LHP) 5 GS... 1-2... 22.1 IP... 31 H... 9BB/14K... 5.64 K/9... 9.67 ERA Duke Brotherton (Sr/RHP) 1 GS... 2-4... 27.2 IP... 30 H... 9BB/16K... 5.20 K/9... 4.88 ERA Kevin Hayes (Sr/RHP) 1 GS... 0-0... 7.1 IP... 12 H... 6BB/7K... 8.59 K/9... 9.82 ERA
They have (4) other pitchers with 7-12 IP, Grillo must be their "supposed" closer with their only (3) saves... 7.2 IP in 9 APP, 0-1 with the (3) saves... 15.26 K/9 (5BB/13K), and 11.74 ERA.
Certainly not imposing numbers, but they rank near or better than Cal's pitching, far below Cal's offensive output.

What do you think they're going to see from now on, going forward? Probably lose every game by 50 if you had your way. Why don't you ever come out of your hole during a winning streak?

Certainly not imposing numbers, but they rank near or better than Cal's pitching, far below Cal's offensive output. Kevin "Don't Call Me Hayes" Haynes, a righty, just started on Tuesday against Seattle and picked up the loss. Taylor and Wilford are the probable Friday and Saturday starters. Both righties. Brotherton (righty) and Jones (southpaw) come out of the pen on Friday and Saturday, if the games are close. Whoever is most rested between Brotherton, Haynes, and Jones probably starts on Sunday. Taylor started last year against Oregon State in the Sunday game. One run on one hit (Smith singled, Dernedde sacrificed him over, third base on a wild pitch, and a Baz sac fly to score Smith). Five walks, most in that third inning that Smith scored. Only three strikeouts. The hits were just not falling. A BABIP of .100. Wilford came out of the pen on Friday and Sunday. Wilford threw seven innings in the two appearances. One walk. Nine strikeouts. No hits. BABIP of .000. Between Taylor and Wilford, Oregon State had a BABIP of .045. Jones is a junior college transfer from Salt Lake Community College. This is his second year at Wazzu. He did not pitch against Oregon State last year. This is Brotherton's fourth year at Wazzu. He only threw against Oregon State in Corvallis back in 2021. Brotherton came in down 8-1 in the eighth and gave up a walk to Meckler and two-run shot from Forrester to make it 10-1. BB, K, BB, and K after that. 10-3 the final. Haynes is a transfer from Sacramento State. Grillo, a righty, was the closer up until early April, when he blew a two-run lead in the ninth against Stanford. Grillo has not been used to close since. Grillo has looked much better over his last two outings, so I am unsure whether or how Wazzu will use Grillo. Brotherton or Haider have been called to close since, Haider only really when Brotherton has already pitched in the game. Grillo is a transfer from Gonzaga. Grillo saved both games last year against Oregon State last year, giving up only two walks and striking out two. He seems to have had a terrible late-March and early- and mid-April, but he has looked a lot better over the past 10 days. Haider is a redshirt freshman, having redshirted last year. It should be pointed out that there have not been a lot of save opportunities the past five weeks.
