Maybe the new offensive system with backs catching passes. Man I hope Ryan doesn't suck as an oc.

While it probably is an advantage to be a marque player and noticed while playing at a blue blood program, I am reminded of Kevin Boss from Philomath who played at Western. He was drafted in the 5th round and ended up playing on a winning super bowl team who beat the previously undefeated New England Patriots. Pro scouts for the most part know who the potential NFL players are. There are plenty of examples of NFL players from lower conferences that have made it big in the pros.

I will add that Martinez might have started considering entering the portal because of the changes to the offense. It just seems like they are going to move away from the power running game to an extent and that might have been enough for him to want to go somewhere else. An offer of some sort (if it happened) could have been the nudge he needed. And, of course the dude and his handlers still think he has a NFL future. Sorry, but he doesn't... DM is a one-trick pony and no new deal will change his prospects of actually making an NFL roster. My opinion of course... He will be working at Chipotle in 2027. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but he won’t be in the league. Too small and too slow.

Need to up the ante. Ok, ok. And Nemo's Carrot Cake! I could have lived off of burritos and potato salad in college. These players are weak. Could have? Top Ramen and Wonder Bread were staples. Also in the camp we will be fine at RB. Karma can be a bitch, there is no guarantee this is a good move careerwise by DM other than financial.

Slow maybe, but he played at over 230 lbs last year. That’s not small.

That’s not small. Yeah. DM is pretty thick. (thicc??) he is 6'0" and 230. he is anything but small. He has good vision and runs north south through the hole very well and off the edge very well. He lacks agility compared to some, generally won't make people miss and is only so-so at running through tackles given his size. He also does not have home run speed. he gets tackled from behind quite a bit. He also doesn't catch the ball, and given that JS and crew historically aren't shy about passing the ball to the RB, one has to reckon it was not by offensive design. Generally for a guy his size he isn't the bulldozer you'd think he was, but he can take some contact and run through the tackles which he did very well at OSU.

That’s not small. Exactly. Jacquizz and Ray Rice made good careers in the NFL despite being "small". The latter had other issues but was good when he was on the field. Other somewhat recent guys that come to mind are Maurice Jones-Drew and two current backs Devin Singletary and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. It won't be size that keeps Dame from making it at the very least.

Per reports, he was slated to receive $400,000 to stay. I'm hearing Alabama and a lot more than that....... Seems insane to me. I’m admittedly an Alabama fan, but as much as I love(d) Martinez I don’t think he’s anywhere close to the Alabama backs. Just as big or bigger, and faster.

Maybe the AD paid him to stay until after the deadline for renewing season tickets - sorry - bad joke! In the current environment, if anyone is renewing their tickets based on 1 player, that is a "you" problem. I will cheer for whoever is here, but I'm not assuming anyone will stay more than 1 year. Judge you are hitting it out of the park tonight with too much common sense.

Martinez said he believes in loyalty. What the hell is loyalty? It is just another word that doesn't mean a thing. The song and dance interview saying he was loyal didn't age very well.

Hate to lose him, but if he goes, he goes. We've almost always been a plug-and-play program with RBs. Simonton, Jackson, Evensen, Quiz, Storm/Ward, Nall, Jefferson, Baylor, Martinez ... somehow we always come up with a good RB. Only "bad" year was Dwight Wright/Ryan Cole combo (I think), when DA was QB. Appreciate the positivity, however, I don't think you can just 'plug' someone into RB and expect to get the same otherworldly production as Martinez, especially with Martinez' extensive knowledge of the quirks of our incomplete offensive line. I think losing Martinez would be pretty devastating for the program personally, considering we are expected to have him for another year or so. He's a supremely talented young individual who actually wanted to try and 'build a dam' here, yet the lights and pressure might have been brighter than expected. Other than the fact we've done it seven or eight times since 2001, you may be right.
