Hard to think the Conforto era as dead bat. 2014 Oregon State, Conforto's Junior season, was the Beavs' second-worst slugging season since 1991. The only season that was worse in the past 32 years was the abbreviated 2020 season. Oregon State's second-lowest ERA was in 2013, 2.28, and 2014 is second, 2.29. 2017 was the lowest, 1.93. |

If it was one of the worst hitting teams, then certainly they knew how to make every hit count, which is perhaps even more remarkable. Grenier, Harrison, Larnach, and Madrigal all raked, but Grenier and Larnach hit better the next year. Adley, Gretler, and Kwan were each a year away. Nobach was hurt all year. Madrigal got hurt at the end of the season. The outfield did not really produce. Lots of steals for a Casey team. Very difficult to piece together runs, but Casey did. The defense and pitching kept the offense in it long enough to pull off some improbable victories. |

That was the era of the higher seamed balls which didn’t seem to go as far. There was no “dead bat” era in the early 10’s. 100% with one exception, they did start checking bats every series in, I think 2010, because a lot of bats were getting worn out by the end of the season and exceeding the BESR limits. For a while they only checked them before the season. But the vast majority of that power outage in that era was because of the seams. |
