I read Utah is working with CdA authorities. /photo/1 Good - I guess what I was trying to say, is young people are experts at taking selfies and creating video content seemingly constantly for social media - they should have documented something like this. I sure hope they did. I’d take it as a given. Especially the second incident. But most likely both. I wouldn’t expect the investigators to publicly reveal what info they have in hand. I would fully expect Utah to have instructed the traveling party not to post or share any video evidence with the public.

Last thing you want is for an athlete or a student to become a target of racism due to posting the perps online. Do not put a face to evidence for this type of thing

I sure hope they did. Seems like it happened quickly and was no doubt shocking and scary to the girls. The knotheads were gone before they knew it.

Have you ever been to Coeur D’Alene? Spokane? How to you do what you say to shield them from idiots and knuckleheads? Quarantine them in their rooms? Are you saying that this couldn’t possibly happen in another town? If so, you’re naive, because I know you’re not stupid. Reading is fundamental. I will start with that. First, in the era of everyone having a cell phone with a camera and recording device, why no evidence? Why no picture of a license plate? Not saying it didn't happen, just that we have also seen a lot of fake claims in recent years as well.
But in conclusion, if it happened, coaches and players should not be afraid to confront - or record. Makes it much easier to track down and punish perps - as they should be punished.
Start taking photos, and have the guy pull a gun or an automatic weapon on you? It's northern Idaho.

Everyone thinks of Randy Weaver, and all of that rigamarole - I get it. Perceptions are sometimes hard to shake. I thought about exactly what you just said - context is important. Distance from trucks, number of girls in group, etc. But point well taken. I guess I was imagining it wasn't too late, in a public area, and multiple girls. But who knows?

@werebeaver @ spudbeaver Years ago I met some Idaho dudes for a fishing trip at South fork Reservoir in Nevada. We only knew each other from a fly fishing forum we were a part of..........I assumed they were donk fans. They were Vandals.......I quickly learned that that was the equivalent of assuming Beavers were hole fans.

Except that academically BSU is more like Portland State (which may actually be an insult to PSU).

It’s not perfect, but it’s better than a lot of people think.

Portland State is a better school than Boise State, but the pair are more comparable to each other than either is to Oregon State.

I’m pretty sure you’ll consider this an overreaction but if GU can’t provide safe accommodations for their guest teams then they should let another school host. Have you ever been to Coeur D’Alene? Spokane? How to you do what you say to shield them from idiots and knuckleheads? Quarantine them in their rooms? Are you saying that this couldn’t possibly happen in another town? If so, you’re naive, because I know you’re not stupid. I grew up in Montana, and have been traveling the I-90 corridor since the 1970s, often making stops to visit family friends in Missoula, St. Regis (Montana), Coeur D'Alene (some friends owned a hotel there for many years - we stayed with them when I was a wee lad when we attended Expo '74 in Spokane.....as all the places in Spokane were sold out), and Spokane/Moses Lake/Seattle. These visits have continued to this day. So yes, been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. This situation ends up as a black eye for the fine folks in those areas, and some of the finest folks I have ever met in my life hail from and/or reside in that area. That said, the Idaho panhandle is not a very diverse area, and the "knuckleheads" in that area are particularly nasty to people of color. And there are a higher concentration of those kinds of knuckleheads in that area - to the point that for several decades now we would caution friends and family that were clearly from out of town to plan accordingly. So I am actually not surprised that something like this would occur there, and actually surprised that the planning brain trust at Gonzaga would not have some level of awareness of the risk of such an incident...... While Spokane might be a pretty good host site, locating the teams in Coeur D'Alene is not (and has not been) a great idea. Our Coeur D'Alene hotel owner friends were of (Asian) Indian origin, and they eventually found the town untenable themselves, sadly. So, while this indeed could happen in any town in America, and it only takes one bad apple, I am saddened to report there are places in America where the likelihood of such knuckleheads being emboldened enough to be a knucklehead are higher. And Gonzaga folks should have known that and known better. Go Beavers!

The Gonzaga people should not have known better. Further, if you plan your whole life around avoiding all possible issues like this you will most likely find yourself barricaded in your home. This could have happened anywhere.

This is a terrible thing, but I question the reporter's use of the term 'hate crime.' What specific crime was committed? Is there a statute on the books making it a crime to call somebody an offensive term? Nothing in the article made reference to viable threats of bodily harm, so I can't imagine this being more than a low grade misdemeanor, if that.
Women who are being stalked and even threatened by former boyfriends or husbands can only get a restraining order, and only if that is violated will further action be taken. Initially, to my knowledge, no crime is charged.Somebody clear this up for me if I'm mistaken.

Really unfortunate and who knows what occurs if a couple players were by themselves?! But, they weren't. And, as you stated name calling itself typically isn't a "hate" crime. Maybe "malicious harrasment" under Idaho statute. Although harassment typically has to be more than a couple drive bys. And, unfortunately this type of stuff happens daily online, in schools, on the streets. But, unless it is continuous and typically some threat of violence or intimidation... FBI & police... good for public outcry, optics, but I'm not sure this is the top of the priority list.
