My point was that they would have been more able to had Segura been throwing on Saturday rather than throwing two pitchers who were obviously still tired from Friday. Not throwing your best pitchers in order sets your bullpen up to lose Sunday games, if the starter has problems. It is like walking a highwire without a net. If things go perfectly, great things can happen. But things can go South very quickly as soon as you run into the slightest bit of trouble. I do not understand what in the holy hell the coaching staff is doing. It makes no rational sense to me. Your hindsight makes no rational sense to me. Segura could have easily blew up on Saturday as well. If they think May will be back, you stick with the normal routine. Duuuuuuuude!!!! Yes, absolutely, but you would have a bunch of fresh arms to bring in rather than a tired Hutch and a tired Montgomery. You roll with the punches, play your best pitchers first, and then bring in guys further down the depth chart later. There is absolutely no reason to abuse your bullpen in game one, when Kmatz can give you an almost perfect five. That just sets you up to lose game three, which is what happened.

Yes, but if Segura blows up in game 2, you still could have less arms for Sunday. And nobody’s abusing anything. Most of our relievers should be able to throw twice in one weekend. Especially the guys that are only throwing 1-2 innings at a time. In that case, it be better having relievers throw Friday and Sunday rather than back to back days.

Most of our relievers CAN throw twice in one weekend, depending on the number of pitches. They SHOULD not, though. Ideally, each pitcher only throws once in a weekend. All teams throw their best healthy starter, then their second, etc. You are arguing that it is wise to sit Wheeler and Nola and have a middle reliever start opening day for the Phillies. No one does that. Stupid baseball. Why tax your bullpen, if you do not have to? Also, you said it was hindsight, and it is not. I said before the Utah series started that Kmatz should start on Friday.

You have no idea how it would have turned out.

You have no idea how it would have turned out. Like arguing that no changes should be made to Apollo 14, because Apollo 13 may have exploded anyway. Oregon State approached the weekend in a suboptimal way and was lucky to win two, needing Utah's head coach to lose his mind and for Utah's best player to implode. That series was much closer to being a series loss than it was a sweep. If Oregon State had started Kmatz on Friday, the Beavs stand a much higher chance of getting a sweep, then throwing Johnny Wholestaff. Johnny Wholestaff is a plan of last resort, when everything else has failed. It should never be Plan A.

The only issue I may (no pun intended) have with this is if we are planning on having May throw this week and then again during the Easter weekend series. If you move Kmatz up to Friday it give you a little more flexibility to have him throw the Thursday game the following week (6 days rest between both starts) and allows May to get a little extra rest coming back from injury without throwing things off too much with everyone else's routine/rest. After the Easter series it gives everyone a chance to fully reset back to normal with the extra day between series.

I fear he secretly did something really bad like Tommy John and we won't see him again this season. Aidan was in the dugout tonight at Portland with no cast on so no TJ surgery yet

May be the WORST analogy EVER made on this, or any other board! Georgie, I disagree with you on basketball, but you know baseball. Does it make any sense to you that Kmatz has not moved up to Friday? Is there a pro that I am missing? Or is it all con? Why chew up your bullpen to start the series? How does that make any sense whatsoever?

I'm not Georgie....but, I've got a theory.
They are not starting Kmatz on Friday night because he has not demonstrated he has Friday night stuff, until last Saturday. Friday night stuff means the ability to shut the opponent down, period. With Kmatz on Saturday, 5 inning and not giving up more than three runs had been a good outing for him, and kept us in the game. You decrease his chances of getting us a win if you move him to Friday.
The other thing worth mentioning is that in 2019 when we lost Abel and moved everyone else up a day in hindsight it did not work out so well for us.
The guy with the unhittable just nasty stuff is the guy who has been closing for us. He have any history anywhere as a starter?

The guy with the unhittable just nasty stuff is the guy who has been closing for us. He have any history anywhere as a starter? We didn't move everyone else a day. We elevated our fourth starter, Gambrell to start in Abel's spot, and kept Fehm second. Later, after demoting Tweedt, we moved our fifth starter, Eisert, to Friday, kept Fehm on Saturday, and moved Gambrell back to Sunday. Tweedt only threw four midweek games thereafter with two starts. EFG Rotation. Eisert, Fehm, & Gambrell. Seven beautiful weekends. Then, Gambrell went down after his last start in April. Oregon State's sixth starter, Pearce, replaced Gambrell. Eisert threw one more start and then was injured. Fehm finally moved up to be the ace. Pearce moved up to be the Saturday starter. Chamberlain, the seventh starter, started on Sunday. That held for one week. Gambrell then came back to take his spot back from Chamberlain. The regular season ended Fehm, Pearce, & Gambrell. Oregon State moved Gambrell up a day to pitch against Creighton. With the EFG Rotation, Oregon State went 19-2 in Pac-12 play. 5-10 after Gambrell and then Eisert got hurt. 2019 is actually Oregon State's best pitching season since 2017. Oregon State had better pitching stats than 2018. Hitting and defense were the issue in 2019, not pitching. And even with the rhino on the hood of the car that were hitting and defense in 2019, Oregon State could have been National Champions. Oregon State had a pretty easy trip to Los Angeles (Tweedt gave up four runs in 1/3 of an inning in his final weekend start in what would be a two run ballgame in Los Angeles to start the Pac-12 regular season; otherwise Oregon State would have won the series in Los Angeles to start Pac-12 play) followed by a pillowy soft half of the bracket in Omaha.

Is there a pro that I am missing? Or is it all con? Why chew up your bullpen to start the series? How does that make any sense whatsoever? Ha... we disagree on WT... not hoops in general. As for pitching rotations... I can not answer for MC and RD as they have the professional insights from working closely with each player. In my experience I know college staffs do not like to upset rotations for many reasons. Some have guys that pitch better in the afternoon... Saturday/Sunday contest are typically midday and some guys just thrive earlier in the day. Some coaches are just stuck on "tradition"... this guy is a Saturday guy type thinking. If May is actually returning I'm guessing that Kmatz was kept in "his" spot to keep everyone on a consistent pattern. Using the "committee" approach for Friday is going to be at least a 2-3 series deal even with May as he'll be on a pitch count and have limited/adjusted off day workouts. Hence, the "committee" served two purposes... prep for May's return and to see who could possible step up into that role if it became a long term necessity. I've often moved pitchers around... of course not at the D1 level... to assure a higher probability of winning a series. For example if an opponent has a STUD ace I may pitch my #2 or #3. Now my ace may be as good, but that win is a toss up with both guys going vs one another. But, I know my ace is far better than their #2 or #3. If we can sneak out a win vs their stud we may not only win the series, but sweep. With Kmatz I could see a similar philosophy being used. If you upset the rotation and use your most experienced/best start available vs a teams Friday guy and lose, you then have to "committee" through the next two games and hope the offense can offset unknown pitching results for a series win. In short I am keeping Kmatz in the Saturday spot because I think he is better than their #2, but a risk vs their ace. Hence, without knowing the future I'm thinking Saturday is a pitching "W"... then we make decisions on Friday from that assumption. If that makes sense...
