May better at throwing strikes but his stuff plays down. Fastball stays on plane. For a guy can touch 96, of his first 50 pitches half were breaking balls. Hitters made solid contact but the home runs were fools gold, only one would’ve been a homer at Goss in the springtime. Defense had a couple mistakes, not sure Hainline can stick at short, and Guerra is the second coming of Ryan Ober at first. I see baseball is a game of worry and hopefully my concerns are unfounded. Tomorrow should be a better test, Minnesota is supposed to be saving their ace for us.

A little research will show that the Minnesota starting pitcher today is a slightly bigger prospect than the one pitching against the Beavers. So not sure which one is really the "ace." Maybe both, maybe neither. But Minnesota does have something we don't have, an assistant coach named Pat Casey. s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/sidearm.nextgen.sites/gophersports.com/documents/2024/2/15/Game_Notes_at_Sanderson_Ford_Classic.pdf?timestamp=20240215053558

First game so hard to really take much from it other than the bats look to be as good as advertised. Caraway had a costly error that ended up costing them 4 runs I think. Hopefully just some freshman first game jitters.

If you have concerns about our opening day win where we won 15-6, where we hit 7 homers, and our starting pitcher went five innings at 94-96mph with a fastball and filthy slider, then I have concerns for your opinions on baseball. Go Beavs!

I think it was a dominant performance. Not perfect, but we've got what we thought we had after day one....a very dangerous lineup, maybe the most dangerous we've ever had...... and some questions in the pitching staff. Hopefully Dorman and his guys are up to the task. It's gonna be fun finding out!

Actually that is good because the opposition can't sit on his FB then and I read that his slider is pretty filthy---If he can keep throwing strikes he should be a good Fri. night ace for us.

Go Beavs! we can revisit my post at mid season and see whether my concerns were valid. Some of what I posted came directly from a couple scouts that were here so I’ll standby my comments

Some of what I posted came directly from a couple scouts that were here so I’ll standby my comments I think it comes off distasteful because it's a tiny data set and it makes the assumption that players don't improve as the season progresses. Just from my observations pitchers tend to peak mid-season to end of conference schedule but batters keep progressing all year. At least that's how it has been under Mitch. It's just as annoying as people calling losses in the third inning or first half of football.

May can amp up to 96 mph on his number one but the nasty slider is his "out" pitch. He had some command issues with it at Arizona so I suspect he was working on it yesterday, hence the high number of breaking balls.
I saw reference to an 83 mph slider and an 88 mph slider. I think the 88 mph model is more "cutter" than slider. Dorman enthusiastically teaches the cut fastball - he likes that pitch.

My biggest concern is we only tied the single game HR record. Why couldn't they have played better.

I understand that any game can be picked apart, and there is always room for improvement, but it’s really hard to be picky about that game. Defense was a a bit shakier than I expected. But man, what a statement in game one. I really thought May looked like a legitimate ace with just nasty stuff. Certainly a lot to be super excited about.
Looking forward to seeing Kmatz today. We really need him to have a big year as our Saturday guy. Go Beavs!
