WHY is fUCLA a s%#tty job? Honestly. HUGE talent pool. Home field is the Rose Bowl. Westwood is pretty sweet. Santa Monica is close. Good school. Drop-dead-gorgeous women in ABUNDANCE. I agree it’s been a tough place to win for quite awhile. WHY? WHY? WHY? Because of their awful powder blue uniforms. Hard to look tough when your football uniforms are gender-reveal blue.

I lived in Malibu for a year, Santa Monica for a year, and Calabasas for a year back in the early-/mid-2000s.
Santa Monica was known locally as Shanty Monica, even back, when I was there. It is like an old divey theme park, how I imagine Coney Island to be. Honestly, I would rather go to the Palisades or to Venice rather than Santa Monica. And I am not sure how nice any of that is anymore, because I have not been back over to the beach in Los Angeles County in almost 18 years.

I'm from SoCal and still have lots of friends and connections down there. The overwhelming consensus among many, many knowledgeable folks there is that IF the UCLA administration were to finally bite the bullet and hire a current, big time successful "name" coach and put some readily available and substantial $$$ into their NIL, then UCLA football could compete with and maybe exceed the USC program. Also, if they would take the leap, the Ram's new, ultra-modern SOFI stadium would be available for them to play their home grams in.
NCAA baseball ain't NCAA football, but UCLA baseball finally hired the right coach and look what's happened to that program.
UCLA football is absolutely a sleeping giant....

I was thinking more of the RECRUITING advantage. If you don’t spend any money, it doesn’t matter. It’s the same reason everyone thinks ASU should be a good job. It isn’t. People think ASU should be a good job? Minimally, UCLA has a much more splendid history to draw on. I would think rekindling something that used to be great would be better than taking over a middle of the road team.

I agree it’s been a tough place to win for quite awhile. WHY? WHY? WHY? Why do you play your home games 30 minutes to an hour away from campus. Yes the Rose Bowl is a fantastic stadium for a bowl game, but a cavernous pit for the small crowds that go to UCLA games. So many more things to do on a Friday night or Saturday that are closer to campus. A former player criticized the Bruin leadership on why they didn’t try to build a stadium closer to campus. Even when they were in the top 5 the crowds were less than 40 thousand so the lack of fan support has always been a problem.

It’s probably twenty miles or so from the campus. I only mentioned Santa Monica because of the Blvd. Pacific Palisades, or dirty Venice are closer.

I agree with you, but only to an extent. Of course UCLA must be a sleeping giant. They are in the heart of LA and in a nicer neighborhood than USC. Neither of those schools really need to recruit outside of LA, but both have the power to do so. Both are academic powers and UCLA is consistently rated as a great public school, even taking the number one spot for public universities in the US on a lot of polls. UCLA has a lot of very wealthy alumni. With all the talent in SoCal and their academic prowess, UCLA should unquestionably be a giant in college football. The problem is that they have been a "sleeping giant" for decades. In the past 60 years, they have had only three seasons with less than two losses: 1966, 1969, and 1982 (in which they also had a tie). Yep, for over forty years, UCLA has always had at least two losses. One would think that a sleeping giant would have woken up at some time by now. I don't know if it's institutional, it certainly seems to be, but the only time UCLA does not take a back seat to SC is when SC hires a particularly bad coach. The fact that Chip Kelly thought he could better progress his career by becoming a coordinator at Ohio State rather than the head coach at UCLA tells me all I need to know about the "potential" of UCLA. It is limited.

Good luck finding any open/affordable land anywhere near UCLA's campus for a stadium.

There's a reason why the LA market is so coveted.

Good luck finding any open/affordable land anywhere near UCLA's campus for a stadium. UCLA doesn't need to find anything for a new stadium...it's already there: The LA Ram's SoFi stadium, unquestionably the finest, most modern football facility in the country, is only about 10+ miles from the UCLA campus and easily accessible by freeway from most anywhere is the LA basin. Rams' management would love for SoFi to serve as home for the Bruins as well as the Rams and Chargers. The question is why is UCLA so determined to play in the relatively remote, mausoleum-like, Rose Bowl, which is located some 30 miles(!) from the UCLA campus?? The answer is the same as for why they haven't gone after a huge-name, currently successful football coach: a timid upper administration with no guts and no appetite for football glory

East Malibu is only like 12 or so miles from Westwood, but it is at least a 20-minute drive without traffic.
