In roseburg in the early 1970's we got a good signal for NBC, a fair signal for ABC, but CBS was so snowy it wasn't worth watching. We got the Raiders game every week so therefore my favorite team. Lamonica, Blanda, Siani, Hubbard, Shell, and Biletnikoff. All along their future hall-of-fame coach. When I was a boy, Eugene or Portland (and I forget which) would delay Monday Night Football an hour. We pretty much got a duplicate of every station, one Eugene and one Portland, except whatever MNF was on. And so, you either watched ultra-grainy MNF, listened on radio, or waited for the hourlong delay.

My grandparents lived off Stolz Hill Road in Lebanon. When I'd go to Lebanon, it would be tv heaven. All networks, PBS and channel 12. For a while Portland Wrestling was the biggest of the highlights.

I don't recall when they stopped doing that delay. I think it was before they moved MNF to 5:15 starts.

Thank you for reminding us of wrestling great, Sergeant Slaughter: When some of us were young there were 9-13 channels and UHF was our friend. 9-13? Man you were living large. We got ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Channel 12 and Catch-22. I can't recall what, if any, network channel 12 was, but that was home of Portland Wrestling sponsored by Tom and Gloria on Saturday nights. Whoot Whoot, Wake Up, I'm Tom Petersen........

Channel 12 was KPTV - just a local channel that ran syndicated shows and re-runs. I don't recall when channel 49 showed up in Portland as a 2nd local syndicate channel, but that eventually morphed into FOX. 32 showed up at some point as another local channel, and then became WB. There have been lots of shifts in those affiliations since those days, with FOX moving from 49 to 12 among other moves.

TV was good, but the traveling matches at area high schools (ours were always outside on the football field) were the best. Especially when you walk in your locker room and there is "Tough Tony" and "Dutch" walking in to change, warmup.

My grandfather's doc made him quit watching because he got so worked up. But this is the same man who asked his doc îf peanut M&M's and Mt. Dew were bad for him and the doc said "you're in your 90's, you tell me."

He was born in mid 1932. When KW started he’d have been 17. When it ended he’d have just turned 20. So whenever his tour of duty landed he would have been a very young man.
