WCC for baseball would be nail in the coffin. Have to try as hard as we can to be independent. Even if we did a half Big West schedule and half independent that would be a good scenario.

Independent is a nightmare. Big West would be nice. WAC, West Coast, and Mountain West are the best other three Western conferences in order. The Mountain West might not be too bad, if we could stipulate that Oregon State plays Wazzu home-and-home. The thing about joining a smaller conference, is that their RPI affects you less than in a larger conference.

Supposedly the Big West turned us down. Commissioner was for it, the ADs/coaches against it.

Given the status of the various conferences in the Western U.S., the Beavs going (at least temporarily) independent may be the best choice amongst a tough range of options. Using a favorite criteria (RPI - $#&*## !), the college baseball conferences in the West, based on 2023, stack up like this: PAC - 4th overall Big West - 10th (but they apparently don't want OSU) WAC - 16 WCC - 18 MWC - 19 Being an independent means major scheduling difficulties, but something tells me that OSU would be up to that challenge. I think that the upgrading of scheduling is already reflected in the 2024 schedule. In 2023, the Beavs followed up a weak Surprise AZ schedule with Coppin State at home in Corvallis. In 2024, after Surprise, the Beavs go to Texas to play Texas Tech / Michigan / Arkansas / Oklahoma State.

I definitely would prefer the big west over any other smaller west coast baseball conference. If we joined that conference in baseball, it would be pretty loaded with perineal postseason baseball teams. A lot of southern Cali schools too, so that would be great for recruiting. Don’t like the idea of WCC, WAC, or MWC for baseball, just not deep enough with talented teams in baseball. I fear our recruiting would take a hit moving to one of those.
It’s not going to happen, but I would love to build a baseball conference with leftover west coast teams from these smaller conferences. With Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, San Diego State, University of San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Washington State, Oregon State, Fresno State, that would make a really damn good baseball conference that would be super compelling.

OSU/WSU have 30 days to decide if they want to join WCC in baseball.
Agree that wins in WCC would drag down our RPI.
Also, it's for '25 and '26. We are still playing in the Pac-12 in '24.

WCC is a bad baseball conference. The top 5 teams in the conference finished the 2023 season with RPI's ranging between 77 (Santa Clara) and 184. They rank as the 18th best conference (just behind the Atlantic Sun Conference - you know, the home of last years conference champions - the Lipscomb Bisons) Santa Clara finished 2023 strong with 9 straight wins through the conference tournament and I think they were the sole WCC entrant in the 64 team field. And they actually won 1 game in the Regional (vs. U AZ), but were eliminated by Arkansas. Historians, help me out: was Pepperdine (1992 National Champs) the last time a WCC team went to Omaha? I know it was the last time a WCC team was in the finals.

I really think joining the WCC in baseball would be a death sentence for our program, and that is exactly why we joined in all other sports except baseball.

Beaver baseball going to the WCC would be the end of our program. National prominence would be completely gone. Mass exodus from recruitment classes and would have to guess some of the current roster wouldn’t want to play in the WCC. Stay independent or find a way to get baseball into the BIG12. Makes perfect sense for BIG12 because adding WSU and us means a 16 team conference for baseball.

Even a move in the Big West wouldn’t be great from an RPI perspective. Only the top 3-4 teams carry any kind of weight and you have to remember. UCI and UCSB both were left out of regionals last year and both were more than good enough to make field of 64. Big West only had one school make a regional last year (Fullerton).

Kendall Rodgers today (Thursday 12/21): "Though @beaverbaseball and @wsucougarbsb have 30 days to let the WCC know if they're joining for baseball, the goal and preference would be for both to jointly join a power conference such as the @big12conference vs. going independent... ...Those two programs to the #Big12 makes a ton of sense if the conference can make it happen. Gives the league another power brand in baseball, takes the league to 16 teams, and scheduling-wise, it gives you a "Western" Quad w/ OSU, Wazzu, Arizona State and Arizona." (not to mention TWO orange & black "OSU" teams)
