First time I've gotten up the energy to look at this board. Haven't even wanted to think about Beaver football, and still don't.
There is no "Maybe next year". This was it. And we blew it.
As funny as it was to quote the line from Major League about winning the whole f'ing thing, the truth is, that is exactly what I wanted. Not only wanted, but needed.
It all just seems so pointless now. Even the Civil War. Why fight battles when they've already won the overall war? Their future is bright, while we are fighting like hell to be as big of a little brother as we possibly can. Yay us!
It all just seems so pointless.
Am I alone in my depression?

You might not be alone, but don't count me in. I'm in the Pat Casey camp. Our future will be what we make of it.

We cn still pee in the ducks cheerios right? Beat them, UA beats ASU and its UA vs uw in the P12 title game. Sure we wanted to win it all...but screwing the ducks over is nice prize too

I get it, I'm feeling the same way but maybe for different reasons. So much pressure on football to be perfect or near perfect. Otherwise, what's the point of the season. Unlike all the other sports where you can make the playoffs and keep fighting. Our men's soccer team went 7-5-5 during the regular season, two wins later, they are in the Sweet 16. We didn't win a championship and are going to a "meaningless" bowl game. This was probably our most important season of all time and here we are again just hoping to spoil our rivals season. Its a bummer and no one know what the future has in store. Enjoy two more football games and then get ready for what should be an amazing baseball season.

I find it kinda difficult to be too despondent over being a top 15 team.

For me it's the blatantly unfair officiating and the power networks and money have over it. Don't even need to watch the Oregon game to know that if it's close at all we will lose. Now all the most interesting parts of the sport are getting stripped away.

We are being recognized and talked about more then ever in my decades of being a fan. What's not to like?

On one hand, OSU is 8-3 and No. 15. On the other, this team was so close to a special season (beyond typical OSU standards) and didn't get it done. Maybe the CFP is a little too much to hope for but TCU did it last year. Certainly getting into the Pac-12 game and even winning it were both on the table. And if OSU loses to UO on Friday, well, when you couple that with the loss to UW and what has been going on off the field, it would be extremely tough to take. I won't blame anybody for feeling down about how things are playing out but they haven't played the Civil War yet. And there's a bowl game to play after that. And after that, the future is still to be determined.

I guess all I can say, but it may do the opposite of helping, is that winning the conference would have been just as pointless in the long run. Would it have changed anything? That doesn't help, does it? The only other thing I can say, which also is unlikely to help, is that way back in 1998 when we rightfully so celebrated our Civil War win, because we knew it was a milestone and portended great things for the future, even though it was only win #5, the butt-hurt duck fans ridiculed us for celebrating. I said at the time that I hoped I would never get to the point that I was like the duck fans that gave up on the season as soon as their overly lofty pre-season goal was out of reach. I said I hoped I could always appreciate each and every game and each and every win instead of taking the position that it's all pointless if we don't win every one. We are still having a great season, with a ton of respect in the rankings, and still a chance to end up with 10 wins (with the ducks and a bowl game). That would be the first ever back-to-back 10-win seasons. Giving up because we can't win the national championship or the conference goes against the goal I set for myself way back in the day. But, yeah, you are not alone in your depression. We are reaching the end of the end of the conference. I'm certainly more depressed than I would have been if the Beavers had been picked up by the Big-12, but the end of the conference would and should be depressing anyway. Somehow, the fact that the Beavers and Cougars are trying to make it endure makes me feel BETTER than if we'd just abandoned it like all the others. Better, but still depressed. For now.

That said, I think we pretty much all believe that our chances this week are slim to none, hope is eternal, and it can happen, but I wouldn't put a $ on it. My personal hope is that the stinking dawgs are up to beating the pond scum suckers again, but I don't believe they can, they've used up a lot of luck in the past few games. We should have got the puppies Saturday and came up short, it was there for us and we just had too many fatal errors. Nothing gets my goat more than the arrogant pieces of s%#te in eugene bragging about their bought and paid for team and players and most of their fans GLOATING over the "poor little left out Beavs". Hell, they may as well join the NFL for the $$$ papa Phil is giving them to buy players, just stop the charade of college football and get on with the Nike pro team.

The whiskey makes the memory of it pretty hazy, but I'm pretty sure back in 1997 I made a deal with the football gods and promised my everlasting soul if it would just be fun to watch Oregon State games. Where they had a chance to win pretty much any game.
And here we are, and I'll be GOTDAMNED if I'm going to get struck by lightning for being ungrateful now.

Sportsball worship/idolatry is, yes, mostly pointless. If one's ego/personal contentment is so deeply wrapped up in the success of "their" team, it might be wise to find other ways to gain those things irl.
Unless your team is winning.

But the vast majority of people are too absorbed in one thing or another. It's not just sports. It's up to each individual to keep an even keel. And I absolutely hate the term "sportsball." Every time I hear the word it's coming out of the mouth of some hipster who is downing their second pint of IPA and complaining that the game on TV is too loud while pontificating on the cosplaying lifestyle. Present company excluded, of course
