So many OSU fans have been concerned about the potential negative impact of the transfer portal now that we head into the Pac-2 era. I have no idea what awaits. What I do know is that OSU can't afford too many losses this year. Smith has a huge rebuild on his hands as it stands right now. The offensive line and defensive front are going to undergo major changes. The OL will lost Josh Gray, Heneli Bloomfield, Jake Levengood, and Tali Fuaga. That is the foundation of possibly the best OL ever at Oregon State. The returners as of now are Tanner Miller, Grant Starck, possibly Marco Brewer (would be big for OSU but needs waiver), along with some others with experience such as Strand, Gonzalez, etc. And what looks to be a solid group of youngsters. It looks like Gould is gone from the WR group along with Munyagi and Irish but Bolden should be back along with Noga and a bunch of young guys. As long as Chiles returns, QB will be good to go. DJU is a possibility. Not sure about Gulbranson. RB should be fine as well, assuming Martinez is back. Fenwick is gone but Newell should be back. I believe OSU should go after another Jam Griffin type. Good RBs are not difficult to land and so I don't see this as an issue. TE should be set as long as Velling stays. Also have Terry and good depth. On the DL/edge, the Beavers lose McCartan, Chatfield, Rawls, Hodgins, Stover and Golden. They need to keep Lolohea and Saluni in the fold and have a bunch of younger edge guys, Hickle, Saez, etc. Also have Otomosho from Wyoming. I am interested to see interior DL players Quincy Wright and Thomas Collins, along with Minnesota transfer Schuster. I think ILB shoud be OK with Mascarenas-Arnold back along with Jordan and hopefully Tongue. Not sure if the Utah transfer Tufaga redshirted but he should be back. Calvin Hart, Jr. is gone. Probably could use a player or two through the portal. Cooper and Robinson will be gone at CB and Oladapo at safety. The Beavers do have a good group back, though, with Arnold, McCoy, Ivy, Skyler Thomas, Kane and others returning. Also, not sure about Alton Julian. He might be able to get a medical waiver? I don't believe he took part in senior day. It will be interesting to see if Smith can not only keep the bulk of his players but can sell the Pac-2 to land some key players in the portal.

I think your concerns are valid, but I'm not as worried as most. Miller and Starck form an excellent nucleus Coach M can build around. In my opinion, there's a good chance DJ returns. If he does, it will create some anxiety RE: Chiles leaving. That begins as soon as the bowl game ends! Rest of the offense will be fine.
The defense will lose some key people and will have to find some plug and play transfers (like a Calvin Hart Jr this year). I could see Lolohea leaving for the NFL (50/50). I see some real talent in our young secondary with Jermod McCoy a rising star.

I think even without the Pac-12 dissolving, next year was looking like a 5-7 to 7-5 rebuilding season. That's the natural cycle of programs that don't recruit/perform at an elite level year after year. If things had stayed status quo with the Pac then I predict we would have had Smith's best recruiting class in the coming one. I really doubt that happens now as our ranking/performance isn't helping us like it should due to our lack of conference clarity. Depth is going to continue to be a problem.
I think we will lose some recruits and more kids will transfer then we want to think. We will have a hard time attracting quality transfers. If next year is a 7-5 year, it's a home run. Sorry to be a downer, but I just can't see it happening any other way. If Smith moves on (Deservedly) to greener pastures, then the picture gets bleaker. Someone please convince me I'm wrong.

I'm not overly concerned...but we're almost done with a really good two year run and we're probably facing somewhat of a downturn. That doesn't necessarily mean the team won't have a winning record next year or drop below 6-6. Agree that Miller and Starck and potentially Brewer could provide the foundation for a decent line but I seriously doubt that it will come close to the level of OL OSU has right now. I don't think DJU will be back. I think Chiles is staying at OSU, at least for the time being. I think he stays even if DJU returns. Agree on the defense, I think it will be fine as long as it retains most or all of the returning players. I'm not sure what Lolohea is considering but there's no NFL buzz around him at all.

OSU roster has Gould listed as R-Jr. If he's outta eligibility then probably Noga or Walker

But anyone who walked but still retains eligibility can decide to come back. It happens all the time.

I think the offense will probably be in good hands with Martinez leading the ground game and Chiles throwing to Velling and Bolden. The OL will have to come together to a high degree in the offseason. Morano needs to gain about 20 pounds and I actually like him better at LT. If Marco Brewer is able to come back, I actually think he might be a good fit at RT. And Starck probably will start. Defense looks potentially pretty good, TBH. Lolohea instead of Stover, probably.

Here's a crazy idea. How about we see what next seasons schedule actually looks like before predicting how the season may turn out. Or who actually may or may not leave. I know, crazy. Well, if you hadn't noticed, this thread is really about personnel, not about record predictions. And nobody here is saying someone is going to leave for sure without using the senior day list. You're more than welcome to not take part in the discussion if you don't like it.

OSU roster has Gould listed as R-Jr. If he's outta eligibility then probably Noga or Walker Zach Card and Jimmy Valsin will likely replace Gould and Irish. Assuming everyone stays. We’ll be fine. Especially with a (likely) easier schedule next year. Obviously who leaves and who stays is the big question.

He might have a decent shot at the next level though, he's been playing well.
