Never understood the Bill Walton hate. He's a character for sure....I get that. I find him entertaining.....and he's passionate about the Pac 12.

Never understood the Bill Walton hate. He's a character for sure....I get that. I find him entertaining.....and he's passionate about the Pac 12. For those of us that are "Native Oregonians", I will give you a couple. For one, I really did not care for the way he ended his career at Portland, as it ended up being a "he said vs he said" with the team doctor - I really do not know in the end who was telling the truth, but I thought he handled it badly, by blaming it all on the Portland doctor at the time. He took no responsibility for the fact he had a choice to play or not play when injured.
Second, just because you can bounce a ball and play, does not make your political views any more valid than anyone else. For the same reason we have a "no politics" rule here on this board, he would be wise to follow similar guidelines. I guess if you are a commentator, or a former star athlete, you don't have to follow the same rules as us mere mortals on social media. ESPN and others have lost a significant number of viewers, because many of us just want to watch sports, be entertained, and not have subtle (or not so subtle) political messages baked into the cake.
I am sure BW is a very congenial, warm story teller. I am sure he is a great guy. But seeing his political views plastered every other day on the cover of the sports section in the Oregonian in the day was a real turn off for me. You asked - I answered.

so you are saying I shouldn't take political advice from actors, musicians, athletes?

I'm a native eastern Oregonian. If I cared about entertainers' politics I'd have a pretty narrow group to follow! I honestly don't know a lot about Waltons early days as a player.....I was a toddler. I just like that he's a character, and not the same old boring broadcaster......I like his little stories about the "conference of champions."

Has Walton been talking politics on broadcasts lately? I must've missed it or I'm just getting numb to it these days.
I pretty much think I have a good idea on his leanings, but what I'm generally hearing is biking, hiking and other stories, maybe with more of a hippie/vegetarian lean, more than straight out politics.

He doesn't talk any politics. In fact his written views were completely absent from any of his broadcasts over the last season. I guess if we all held grudges over what everyone did years/decades ago we'd be in a pretty sh%tty situation. Just glad my youthful indiscretions/choices were not in the public eye. oh wait...

You know, in responding to both drunkandstoopid and rgeorge, I think I may have been a little unfair to BW. Your points are well taken. Just because in the '70's, '80's, etc, he was very political, doesn't mean he is today. And yes, decisions regarding the blazers and injuries were a long time ago - Lord knows I am not even close to the same person I was back then. If he has chosen to leave the politics out, and has become more of a senior storyteller, then good for him. I need to learn to let go sometimes of old grudges

This made me wonder “Will Walton follow UCLA to the big10?” Please, please, please 🙏 wonder if Walton will have a bumpy welcome in big 10 after calling the whole league a bunch of truck stops

The guy gave his body for the sport, he teeters around with a shuffle to walk. A long time ago I was angry about how he left Portland, then I became ambivilent, now after watching the show I completely understand. You also have to watch the show to understand how much he completely loves the Portland Trail Blazers, they are his team, without reservation.

Bill Walton is 2 months short of 71. I've met him a couple of times, and he does seem like good guy, but I, for one, would be glad if he retired. If he announced on air that he could no longer announce games after this season for the schools that destroyed his beloved conference of champions, I would admire him greatly for the way he chose to go out.
