[br I once pounded sand so hard that I made a diamond…true story! I think you got glass. I believe you’d need more carbon to get a diamond. Just a guess. There is black sand, which can turn into diamonds, given the correct conditions. Regular sand usually can only turn into glass or rhinestones.

Bill Walton flies SW quite a bit. Sucks for those sitting next to him but might make for some decent banter at 35000 feet

My uncle and aunt lived a stone’s throw away from Helix high when I was growing up. Uncle told us about this big redhead on the basketball team that we just HAD to see play. We lived just north of La Mesa in San Carlos, so dad drove he, my brother and I to Helix to watch him. I THINK it was ‘68,’69. He just dominated. Then, I was playing football at Clackamas CC in ‘76, and I went to visit a teammate at Willamette Falls Hospital who tore his ACL. As I walked down a hall, there big Bill was. I just went ahead and let him know that I grew up in San Diego and saw him play in high school. He got this big grin and said I was lucky to be in Oregon. BIG dude. Very genuine.

My dad was taking me and three of my friends to the last Mariner home game late in September 1977. We were getting gas at the Market St. exit in Salem, east side of the freeway. I forgot, but we had just got a meal at the Denny's and I had said "I think that guy over there eating is Corky Calhoun." My friends said no way. Anyway the station attendant says Bill Walton is riding his bike around here. Then about a minute later a giant red-headed dude goes zooming by on a bike. We all ran after him and saw Dr.Ramsey, Lucas, et al. The Blazers were just breaking training camp and had been staying at a Best Western. Things are different now. Mariners lost to the White Sox.
