An interesting quote from Oram's column yesterday:
"Listen to people who have closely watched spring practice and you’ll hear that Uiagalelei has been the Beavers’ third-most impressive quarterback in two weeks of spring practice."
First of all, anybody hear anything similar to this?
In some ways, I'm not surprised if true; new system, new coaches, new teammates, etc. But why wouldn't the same apply to Chiles? Is this more a take on DJ, or how good Chiles is?
I'm trying to stay realistic, but I have to admit it's hard not to dream of DJ coming in and having a season comparable to Nix, Penix, or Williams. Comments like this quickly bring me back to earth, though...

I like these kind of problems. Me---not so much....I mean it's nice to have multiple good QB's but for team dynamics and less drama I would like to have one guy that steps up to be clearly the man in charge!

Kids just got here. Let’s give him into fall camp.

If Aiden hits the deep route, close observers say, "That's impressive for a freshman in spring ball." If Ben hits the deep route, close observers say, "That's impressive how he improved his range so much since fall." If DJ hits the deep route, close observers say, "That's what we expected."

Kids just got here. Let’s give him into fall camp. I agree with you, he has had very little time to absorb an entirely different offensive system. Would honestly be a shock (or maybe concerning about our defense!) if he came in and started absolutely lighting it up.

How do we know one hasn't stepped up and taken charge? We do have a returning QB who's won a lot of games already. I'm super excited by the talent we've added at QB. I also will not count out BG as they guy and expect he will/has improved in many ways and will be tough to unseat.

I think we can all admit that it would be a massive surprise (disappointment?) if DJ didn't come in here and win the QB competition going away. That said, we've only had a few spring practices, but the dude is the highest rated recruit ever to come to OSU, and has a decent run as a starting QB on a Championship contending team under his belt.

When asked about DJ in Friday's post-practice interview, coach's body language and tone-of-voice - as well as his words - suggested that he, at least, was impressed.

If Aiden is "absolutely lighting it up," I would describe that as a shock as well. I believe that he is being judged with "for a true freshman" appended to every single statement about him.

Comments like this quickly bring me back to earth, though... When I read the title I thought it referred to DJ as the 3rd best QB in the Pac12. I could honestly see DJ flourish under guidance from Coach Smith and staff. It is early Spring - not sure I would evaluate a QB off of a few practices. I would be slightly surprised to not see DJ as the starter in the first game. The comments inthe last week of fall practice would be my indicator of the depth chart.

Ben #1...D.J. # 2 ...Aiden #3...until the fear of Ben moving on is gone. Aiden needs to stay #3 so Ben feels appreciated.

If, BG earns and keeps the job outright, I won't feel disappointed. I will assume DJ is all he's advertised to be and BG was able to outperform him. That will say something highly positive about BG and not negative of DJ. Now if on the other hand it's not a full fledged competition because one or more aren't performing at a high level, then that's a different story. I look at the QB of the team who actually did win the championship. He might of held one smaller college offer out of high school, certainly wasn't recruited by any big name schools, and I believe walked on at Georgia. Now he has two titles under his belt. Yes he has an all star supporting cast, but he also made some huge plays on his own.

Yes he has an all star supporting cast, but he also made some huge plays on his own. That is a very nice and mature way to look at it. It's also not unfair to say that DJ's physical gifts are obvious to all with a pair of eyeballs. If Ben wins the job, it's because DJ is not making the right reads yet, and needs more reps to execute the offense. But with that being said, it's hard to take Oram's opinion THAT seriously. I'm not trying to trot out the worn old TrUsT tHe cOaChEs!!1 shriek, but maybe the opposite. Maybe "I don't entirely trust the opinion of a journalist". With all due respect, none of us know what it is that they are seeing in the film room and what they are asking of DJ with respect to progressions and taking what the defense gives you, etc etc. Regardless of whether DJ gets the starting gig or whether Aiden is "better" by whatever metric you choose, one thing we can all agree on is that the QB room got better this year over last year.
