With as many concussions as he's had I am surprised he is still playing.

Neither. He's a guy who has been "snakebit" with injury but has also showed the ability to be extremely productive. So he's expensive to keep on the roster and simultaneously attractive to take a chance on. Especially in the Houston trade where Dallas is only picking up $12M of his $18M salary and Houston is picking up the other $6M.

I've always thought it was Cooks' injury timing combined with salary more than anything. He apparently was vocal about not being enthralled with Houston, not sue about the other places though.

There's been rumors throughout his career about being difficult, but everyone that played with him and is close with him raves about how unselfish a player he is and his work ethic is legendary. He's still close friends with James Rodgers, whom I perhaps irrationally regard as a very high-character guy. He's still close with Brennan as well.

I am surprised that being involved in 4 trades is the record, and that even that has only been done twice now. Contrast that with the NBA where players are often traded twice within the same season, or the MLB where long careers mean a player can be traded a bunch.
Also remember that this is trades and not team changes. Free agent signings don't count.
Record in MLB, Jesse Chavez with 10 trades. Record in NBA, Trevor Ariza with 9 trades.

The NFL doesn't lend itself to trades as well as MLB or NBA. Football is much more dependent on its scheme and playbook than either of the other two. Add in the vast differences in positions, and it's not as easy to switch successfully from one team to another - especially mid-season. In recent years, the media and analytics community has been pushing trade narratives harder at the deadline (which is like, 7 games into the season), and it HAS become more prevalent, but I don't think it will ever reach the same level as either of the other big two sports, just from the nature of it. Long term guaranteed contracts of MLB and NBA also kind of add to the motivation to trade people, rather than NFL contracts where you can cut a guy and erase any non-guaranteed salaries in the out years.
