Former McDonald’s All American PG from Texas has entered the portal:
Not great stats, and she sat out this season, but I’d assume there’s a lot of upside there.

Former McDonald’s All American PG from Texas has entered the portal: Not great stats, and she sat out this season, but I’d assume there’s a lot of upside there. I thought it was crazy she signed to Texas when her HS teammate Rori Harmon was also headed there. She should have known Rori was a much better PG, the whole country did. Hunter is extremely unlikely to leave Texas. My money is she heads to Texas Tech, TCU or drops to a mid/low major like UTSA where the former Texas coach who originally recruited her now coaches. But I will continue to say it through portal season; we do not need a guard of any kind from the portal unless someone transfers out. This year's issues were largely chemistry issues and adding another guard would be even worse than we saw this year.

hoopheritic, until we hear of portal changes, my guess would be that Beers starts at post, TG starts at PF, Adlee is the 3 spot, and Talia starts at the 2 guard. AJ would swing from backing up 3&4, and Lily would roam from 2-4. If we don't need more guards of any kind, and I tend to think SR may stick with what he has, who do you think will be the PG? And, if your answer is one of the freshman, or Martha, should the coaches feel comfortable going with inexperience, when an experienced/proven PG could be difference between a solid team and a strong contender in the Pac12 next year?

If we don't get anyone better out of the portal my guess is AJ will play the point with Talia helping out.

Rueck doesn't run an offense that needs an elite ball handler, just needs someone to get the ball up the floor when pressed. Martha, Talia, AJ, Adlee are all as good or better than Noelle in this regard and three of those are also scoring threats. With the inside <> outside threats of Reagan <> Adlee/Lily the floor will be balanced.

We definitely started to see that later in the conference run with AJ bringing the ball up through pressure. Looking back at Baylor's 20-21 season where they played 6'2" Richards at point because she had speed. AJ could be even better because she has a mid-jumper and is enough of a three threat that you have to defend her there too. And, like an elite quarterback, a tall PG can see over the defense. Like Richards, AJ probably didn't grow up playing the point so needs time to learn it. I think you're on to something here.

If you are counting on AJ or Adlee to be your point guard, it's not going to happen. Can they both help with ball handling and getting the ball up the court? Sure. Are they anything near a true point guard? No. AJ averaged an assist every 20 minutes last season. Adlee averaged an assist every 21.7 minutes. Would that number improve if they had the ball in their hands more? Of course it would. You know what else would go up? Their Turnovers. Both Adlee and AJ had more TO's than assist, and that was without them handling the ball much. If the Beavs do not add another player, it's either TVO, Martha, or one of the freshman as your point guard next season. As far as just handling the ball, a lineup of Timea, Raegan, Adlee, and Talia, with an unknown 4th person is a nice group.
In my opinion, Talia's problems in the past were because she had little help getting the ball up the court. She could be double teamed, and she had no scoring threat to pass the ball to. With Timea, Raegan, and Adlee as scoring threats, that takes some pressure off of whoever is bringing the ball up the court. You leave a scoring threat open, and you pay the price. Beers played a big role down the stretch getting the ball up the court. She played the big option of getting the ball inbounds and often brought the ball up the court herself against her defender. There are ways of getting around having the 'Bendu' fast player type, but that doesn't change the question of does the staff want to rest with what they have, go with inexperienced youth, or do they want to try to go after a talented/proven player to fill an open position which could be the difference between a solid team, or a true contender.

Pac-12 PG need to be able to do the following:
-Reasonably defend both quick and big guards -Shoot a respectable % from deep -Be a slashing threat, with ability to dish when slashing -Be able to handle the ball against quick defenders, full court -Read defenses and set the offense, including getting the offense initiated at the right spacing and angles - Make effective be entry passes into the post - Create scoring opportunities far more often than turnovers
I do not believe there’s a single player on the roster who even has the potential to do all the above. We had people playing PG that did 1-2 of those things sufficiently well this season, and I believe this is the second biggest reason for our record (#1 being shooting %)
We may not need more guards, but unless Shuler is a going to be a quick study, this is a huge transfer need IMO. I had hope for Martha, but she got eaten up on the defensive end, and I don’t know how she’s going to fix that.

She wanted none of that. I’m just not seeing her become a primary ball handler.

Possible replacement for Jelena:
I’m sure she’ll draw a lot of Pac-12 interest.

You and others have converted me from a fanatic "we must get a true point guard from the portal" to be competitive. I am now fully on board with your above statement
However, I still strongly hold to my position, that the current Coaching staff and players must improve significantly in their off season development over what has occurred the past couple of years.
Go Beavs!

Bad news for Cal:
OSU recruited her a little in HS.

I agree too and see what you both are saying and you just converted me too. Going to the portal is unnecessary at this point and could create some chemistry problems.

WBB portal already up to 315 names. Only 30 of those 315 averaged over 10ppg this season.
