Cougs are off to one of hottest starts in country at 11-1. Their loss was to UC Irvine who just swept at ASU.
So what's going on in Pullman? Weak schedule, lucky streak, or perhaps the cougs are quite good this year and this weekends series will be a tough test? I think they are improved and have some strengths to contend with. They picked up quite a few transfers, in fact it looks like they have more transfers on their roster than players who came to them via high school.
A few things that stand out about the production so far in comparison to rest of conference.
RBI"s: Five players with double digit rbi's. Three are tied for 4th most in conference with 16, another 8th in conference with 15, and another is 14th with 13.
SB's: they have two players in top five for stolen bases.
SO's: conferences strikeout leader with 27
ERA: 4 pitchers in top 20 for era, a fifth is 21.
Wins: Conference leading pitcher with 3 wins
The point of my post is, well first and foremost the start of a discussion on the upcoming series, but also to say the Cougs look like a well rounded team this year so far and would expect to see a real "cat" fight. They can hit, score, steal, and pitch. On paper, this should be a good one and as we saw last year, every conference game is so important.

They are 11-1, and all 11 wins are against Quad4 teams in the current RPI with a SOS at #218. The one game they played against a Q1 team (UC Irvine) they lost. For comparison, OSU is 5-1 against Q4 teams, 2-0 vs Q1 teams, and a SOS #182. No Pac12 series is easy and the Cougs are probably improved, but maybe a bit of fools gold in that record? This weekend will be a much better measuring stick for both programs. Nice to have a home series this early in the season while still working out the kinks. If the Cougs win the series they should definitely be ranked, and their RPI will skyrocket. RPI

The Cougs might be great...I'll believe it when I see it. Recruiting to Pullman got to be tough. They are after all the Cougs, until which time they prove they are not.

All I know is, gotta win this series, cuz we go to the farm the following weekend. We also have two midweek games against Nevada before the furd series.....not that NV is great or anything, but it taxes Our pitching. Our schedule is about to get a lot tougher.

Looks like Greg Fuchs is starting most games for them so that's neat. Hitting .233 with nearly a walk per game.
They are kinda like New Mexico, alot of veteran transfers anf tough to get a read on.

But a team that has managed to reach 11 wins with only 1 loss needs extra consideration, even if their opponents' RPI is low. Most teams are working on coming together and getting ready for conference play. To roll into conference play with such a record has to have the players pretty jacked up. Fan base, too, I suspect. Luckily, we're playing them at Goss. I think we'll win the series, but I expect a tough go of it.

Does RPI even hold any weight this early? Wofford has the highest RPI and it's biggest win is against 5-7 Michigan State.

I guarantee they will have at least one soft lefty that will give us fits. It’s tradition

Or just not very much yet. I am hoping the early trends hold up in the RPI. The Pac12 and SEC have been well above the pack in terms of conference ratings. If that holds, then it SHOULD mean more teams in the post season, and more host sites for the conference. The conference started out great (other than hole -who cares), but is now dropping off some. Really need ASU to get off the mat, and need Pac12 to continue to win mid-week games. Also, the west coast as a whole is having a better than average season so far in terms of wins and losses. Will that make any difference whatsoever in how the post season shapes up? Or will it just be the same routine of a ton of SEC and ACC, and then everyone else.
