Fielding has been sketchy but I think it will be solid as the season goes. I don’t think we will drop routine fly balls and routine throws. Some concern about the hitting. I was surprised that on the Joe beaver radio show that coach Gipson said they changed Forrester and Bazanna’s swings over the winter. Trying to get Travis to hit the ball in the air and Garrett to pull the ball more. That’s what their biblical like analytical tell them. Bazanna’s speed is not a factor if he is hitting fly balls. Garrett was great last year at see pitches and taking his walks. By starting the bat earlier to pull pitches he opens himself up to off speed pitches and chasing pitches. The hitters look like they are over thinking their AB’s , worrying about their mechanics and the metrics. It way early, maybe with more swings the aggressiveness will come
Real concern about the pitching. We have shown two Sunday, boarder line Saturday starters. Their results don’t matter as much as the stuff they have shown does. The “Friday stuff “ is not there. Can not get by without a horse at the front of the rotation. Bullpen has showed good arms. Like any good team if you can’t get some length out of your starters, your pen will eventually pay the price.
That’s just my impressions so far. Too early to draw set in stone conclusions and I will gladly be wrong about the starters and the hitters
73 and sunny today

I didnt get to see much of the game yesterday. My understanding is the bullpen kinda fell apart. I saw 8-2 and then checked back in and it was 7-8. Looked like a couple more errors too I believe? A couple of pretty sloppy games.
My understanding is the NM team is full of upper classmen.....and their Friday guy was pretty good against us. I mean no excuses, we should own NM, but we have a young team that is going to take some lumps.
What I saw of Kmatz he looked pretty solid. I thought Sellers did a good job of pitching out of trouble. He didn't seem to have his best stuff. His reputation of being a competitor seems legit.
I noticed Bazzana is holding the bat differently. He and Big Country will get things rollin.....maybe today....why not?

In regards to swing changes for productive guys. It may also be driven by feedback from MLB scouts. Boyd had a similar slow start in the first couple games last year due to some off season changes and it has pretty monstrous results. What they are changing sounds exactly like what an MLB evaluator would want to see from those two. Both of them are borderline draft talents atm and just need that bit of extra umph to their game.

On the positive side, Keljo looks like a pending Stud+. He need to learn how to pitch. Looks like he throws everything he has on every pitch. I think he tried that and watched to ball head to fence. I would agree, first time in along time that the Beav's don't have a Friday Night guy.

We should be hitting well in the desert heat and the weaker competition, but we aren't. Guys aren't getting on base cleanly. Pitching will settle in; defense will settle in; but offense is a weakness again.

Pitching will settle in; defense will settle in; but offense is a weakness again. 60 degrees on Friday. There's a funny Sonic ad down here about wearing Winter wear at 58 degrees. It's very spot on. It froze on Tuesday and Wednesday. And 60 degrees is two degrees above it being unofficially cold down here. The desert heat does not really start rolling in for at least another couple of weeks. New Mexico's starter was Riley Egloff. Egloff's dad played for the Indians and was a pitching coach in the Tigers' organization for a time. Egloff had an ERA of 1.80 through March 21, 2022. He looked like a surefire All-Mountain West. However, the Mountain West is very............. y'know...............mountainous. Elevations of Division 1 teams with both a baseball and football team: 1. Air Force 6,620 2. New Mexico 5,100
Basically, Egloff was pitching lights out until he played at the end of March at Colorado Springs. He then gave up tons of runs mostly at elevation.
Brian McBroom, who was an Academic All-Mountain West last year, replaced him and went four innings. McBroom actually pitched against Oregon State last year and gave up a two-run triple to Bazz but gave up the fewest runs to New Mexico of the four Lobo pitchers that pitched in the opener. 21-1 Oregon State win.
All-in-all, I would not stress about it........yet. Still a long season ahead.

Gavin Turley has the best bat for an incoming frosh since Conforto. The emergence of Hutchinson should make Ferrer a real option as our Friday night guy. McDowell has shortened up his swing and is sqaring up balls. If he can continue as he did today, it's a huge development for us. I think this team will adopt the personality of our 2nd baseman, which is hyper aggressive. Looking for Forrester to put up Adley 2019 kind of numbers. If it all comes together and we catch a couple breaks in June, pack your bags for Omaha!

Both 60 degrees without the humidity that we have here sounds wonderful!

Ye of little faith! I am one. I seem to forget these guys are mostly elite athletes. With desire they should be damn good. New Mexico's Pen was weak and we did work those guys over. I do believe we need better Starting Pitching. Hunter actually looked quite good, keeps the ball down. Was hoping for more from Sellers. Kmatz, looked like Kmatz and will do well. Ferrer Friday Night?
Ferrer Friday Night Kmatz Sat. Sellers Sun.

Yeah, the starts don’t get easier, but once his confidence is up, I think he’ll be every bit as good as advertised. I’ll worry about Ferrer’s spot in the order when he is back. I think pitching will work out the kinks on its own. Playing four games in a row is an u usual challenge. Tomorrow’s game should be interesting.

In the 7th with runners on the corner with one out and a comebacker to Nelson, and Bazzana drops the double play ball that would have ended the inning. Osu goes on to give up five more that inning. Certainly wasn't Nelson's fault. 8-2 and on to the B7 is what should have happened. Hitting will come...lots of newcomers. Defense will come. Ferrer when healthy changes the whole dynamic of the staff. Ferrer on Friday...KMatz on Saturday...Sellers on Sunday. ..Brown closing.
Bazzana will hit...Forrester will hit...Cedillo will hit. Turley will get better and adjust. McDowell has improved,Smith/Weber will be solid catchers. It's too early to draw many conclusions. Give this team 30+ games and then we can revisit this.

If McDowell can continue at this level it will be a remarkable development of talent. Not sure who is responsible or what the back story is, but well done.
