Fab Freshman Jordan Pope is closing in on some OSU rookie records. Pope made one 3 pointer last night so he's currently tied for second with Kendal Manuel. Look at that group of illustrious Beaver freshmen!

Pope has been a standout freshman in the Pac12 this year. He's been selected Pac12 Freshman of the Week 3 times. Can he close the deal and beat out UCLA's Amari Bailey to be named Pac12 Freshman of the Year? Pope's numbers are better, but Bailey plays on high profile Bruin team. Regardless, I like his chances. Stay tuned.

Look at that group of illustrious Beaver freshmen! Bad list to be on. McLaughlin transferred to UC Santa Barbara after witnessing the Spanish terrorist attacks. He wound up an All-American at UC Santa Barbara. He's now in the D League. His transfer took a lot of wind out of the 2017-18 season and, really, the next season as well. Manuel is Nelson Mandela's nephew. He transferred out the 5-27 year to finish up in Montana. He is playing France last that I checked. Angelo Tsargarakis suffered a shoulder injury between his freshman and sophomore seasons and was never the same. He transferred down to Cal Poly Pomona his final season. He then spent 12 seasons playing basketball in France and Greece, winning four French Championships, being named a French All-Star three times, and being named the French 3x3 National Finals MVP. Stevie Thompson is the only one of the four that stuck it out all five seasons.

Jordan pope is very good for a freshman but the stats seem to imply he is better than Gary Payton as a freshman. He isn't.

Pope has had an incredible first year, and I think he's probably the best Pac12 freshman, but as Don McLean said last night, UCLA is in first place and heading to the NCAA so one of their 2 kids will fight over Pac12 Freshman of the Year honors.

By the time Gary got out of here he probably could be mentioned among the top college guards of all time. That's a lot to expect. I'd argue he's at least as good as a first year Mark Radford or Ray Blume, probably even the second year versions of them. I'd take that.

Jordan pope is very good for a freshman but the stats seem to imply he is better than Gary Payton as a freshman. He isn't. He's a better shooter than Payton was as a freshman but is nowhere near where Payton was at the end. Payton beats Pope in all hustle stats, but Pope also is turning the ball over less than half as often as Payton. If Pope is on the same arc, Pope could be a much better scorer than Payton, but Pope would have to drastically improve his rebounding and defensive stats to approach Payton in all areas.

I should also add that Pope has played a more difficult schedule than Gary Payton did his freshman year. If the stats are not there, it might be because Pope had a harder row to hoe. The only season that Payton played a more difficult schedule than Pope was Payton's junior year (Ralph Miller's final year).

See the reel gems Bill Sherwood for 3! GP had something that you don't see just in someone who can drive occasionally and hit a jumper... Which is still a big leap from most current P12 players.

If Pope is on the same arc, Pope could be a much better scorer than Payton, but Pope would have to drastically improve his rebounding and defensive stats to approach Payton in all areas. I think you could say that Pope is a better pure shooter than Payton was his freshman year. Pope has a nice looking shot. Payton his freshman year? Not a lot of rotation on the ball and he definitely laid some bricks. Payton (.459/.371 from 3) shot better from the field during his freshman year than Pope (.428/.383), but Payton could drive to the basket far better than Pope could and scored a lot of points on layups. Pope is a way better FT shooter (.833 vs. .671). The turnover thing is a great example of "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." In comparing their freshmen years, yes, Pope does have less than half of Payton's TOs/game (1.5 vs. 3.1), but that does not tell the whole story. Payton averaged 7.6/assists per game and had a 2.45 assists/to ratio. Pope averages 2.4 assists/game and a 1.6 assist/to ratio. Pope doesn't pass nearly as much as Payton did and I think it's fair to doubt he ever will in Tinkle's "offense." Pope is an excellent player and a great recruit for Tinkle, but he has a long way to go to catch up to Payton and probably never will. That's no insult; Payton is one of the greatest basketball players in history.

I have to agree with seastape's post. If Payton had an above-average 3-point shot, maybe similar to Danny Ainge or even Stephen Thompson, we would be arguing about who was the best player of the modern era, Jordan or Payton.
