I'm as bummed as the next guy that we're losing our best player at the most important position on D, but maybe the guy is just looking for a new experience in life. We have no idea what is going on in the personal lives of these guys, or what is in their heads. Speights has put in his time to be a Beav for life and has one more year of CFB left. Hate to see him go, but I'm guessing he has his reasons. Next man up.
I feel the same way about Gebbia. People on here are questioning what he gains by going elsewhere, and that this doesn't really help his budding coaching career. That may be, but the guy probably has one year left to play the game and the rest of his life to coach. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he ends up at at a lower division where he will get to play his final year, instead of signaling in the plays from the sideline for another year. Could you blame him? Anyone who has ever played any sport knows that most players want to play, as long as they can.
Hate to lose anyone, and especially Speights, but it's the world we live in now. We will get our share of players from the portal.

If everyone does their part the defense might not miss a beat.
Omar was one of our best players, but I'd think a single linebacker position is not the single most important position on the defense. If there was one single most important position I think it'd be DT or the NT/NG. If you get a gamechanger at that position, say an Esera Tuaolo or an Ndamukong Suh, or a Dwan Edwards, it makes everbody on the D look better.
Our D kinda got it done by committee this year. A lot of people played well and the team appears to really be building depth. I'd still like to see a monster come in up front and terrorize offensive lines for 3 years or so at a time.

I called the LB the "most important position" because they are the "QB" of the defense. Omar was also a seasoned vet and team leader. But, I agree. DT is probably the single most important player on the defense. Probably an argument to be made on the other side of the ball too. Your QB can be all world, but if your O-line are chumps you are probably going to struggle on offense. We return a ton of experience on both lines so losing a MLB is not probably going to a huge loss for this team. And like you point out, there is depth building on the roster. Including at LB.

Now would be a great time for a "generational talent" to show up at DT. Our defense would probably be amazing, it was becoming that way by season's end already. I'm hoping maybe "our new Swede" could be that guy. He could be an under the radar type simply because he's from Europe, or he could turn out to be one of several solid "committee members" on our depth chart (which wouldn't bother me in the least).
Things are definitely looking up these days.

Things are definitely looking up these days. Maybe not generational but we do have some good prospects we have been developing at DT while we still had Sandberg, Hodgins, Anderson, and Rawls. Fa'amoe, Shippen, Golden, and Saluni are all 280+ athletic guys that can keep doing what we have been doing for awhile. If your talking an earth anchor the best Candidates are Quicky Wright (312) and Sio (350). I'd expect to see both of those guys getting time next year. Having Rawls back is a big deal. He's strong, explosive and has a very developed understanding of leverage He plays well above his weight. Last year and this coming year are the first years since sometime during Riley that we will have 3 deep on the D-Line where everything ne is proper size for the position. The lightest guys well see at DT run about 280 and the lightest DE are 255-260. With the hybrid we play we don't exactly need a monster in the middle but we want to see DT in the 6'2-6'5 285-350, DE in the 6'2-6'5 255-290 and EDGE 6'2+ in the 240-285 range. Physically our roster is hitting on all cylinders and that's with lots of young guys that are still growing into their bodies and getting in college shape. I have noticed that our program tends to run guys alittle light but highly focused on strength and explosiveness. Guys like Rawls and Sandberg could have played in the 315 range but we kept them lighter and you can even see weight loss across their career. I really like our S&C program, maybe the best we have had.

Are you certain about scholarship being honored? Obviously if Omar decides not to transfer he would be welcomed back with open arms — and scholarship intact. But I don’t think a school is not required to hold a scholarship for a player that enters the portal. Does OSU have an their own internal policy that is different? NCAA recommends universities hold it for the current academic term. They don't HAVE to do anything or welcome an athlete back. In a case like Omar he's gonna be fine. If you become a school that drops scholarships and forces players out 'unfairly' it does make notable reputation issues in recruiting. Oregon has this reputation for track since the 90's and it has hurt them in recruiting before. They are a Tier 1 track program so they are still competitive and win alot but they could have been much better if they had a supportive reputation instead of a plug and play one. Right, that’s what I thought. Can’t imagine a school would cancel schollie mid-term if player enters portal. But beyond that there is no requirement to keep schollie there for beyond that and accept back to team. Some go back and are accepted back on team. I’d be curious to know how many players enter the portal, have second thoughts and try to return to team to be told no thanks. I’m guessing might not be that high since if you’re good enough team takes you back and if you’re not you know it and left to get time at a smaller school.

I'm still hoping Sio can become a force to be reckoned with.

Pretty sure any good program is going to have that open conversation with the player BEFORE they enter the portal. Players and coaches on our staff have been very open about how players are evaluated, informed and allowed to explore options. It starts right in the recruiting process with Smith disliking commits not taking visits or committing too early. I think the coaches are pretty honest with guys about playing time and what they need to do to get on the field. If a player doesn't like that I'm sure they know the transfer portal is an option. I don't see anyway the "improve the room" mentallity works if they aren't open and honest about everything. That would turn toxic very quick.

Though in some cases players are entering the portal right after their final game, so wonder how much discussion actually took place. Thanks for info and thoughts.

Great link. Thanks for sharing. I think I found an error... click on Johnathan Riley and you get a the profile of Mason Tufaga. Oops. Chance Nolan also not committed to a new location yet either.

Baylor apparently had 1 scholarship QB (a sophomore) on the roster and has been looking for competition. They took a freshman transfer a little while ago. I could see them wanting a senior in the QB room even ifnot as a starter.

I'm sure "Quicky" Wright is a typo but I hope it fits....you're one of the few that have mentioned him in awhile...I really think he might be an impact guy. Huge to get Rawls back. I really think we're going to see a few new faces in the interior DL. Not so worried about losing Sandberg...thought he was just OK but maybe still in the process of catching up as a football player. Not sure we will see a lot of Sio on the field. Really interested in how the new Swedish guy pans out.
