Huge get...this was one area that I have been a little worried about, particularly if Speights decides not to return. If he does, they could be in a position not to miss a beat here with Speights, Mascarenas-Arnold and now Tufaga, along with some younger guys

6'1", 230. He and I are the same build! Of course, when I was 20, I was 6'1" and 165...

We recruited him hard out of high school. Nice to see the relationship work out.
We're also slowly starting to get some guys from Hawaii again which is always a bonus.

Why wouldn’t such a big time recruit get any action in two years?

Why wouldn’t such a big time recruit get any action in two years? Competing for roster spots against 30 year olds is a challenge. Jokes aside it can be lots of things. He may have just been evaluated poorly or it was a bad fit. Utah does typically bring in serious talent at LB. Diabate was a high 4* to UF, Lander Barton was ranked even higher and is a frosh. Mason wasn't even the highest ranked LB in his class and that dude hasn't done much yet either. They brought in 4 LB and 2 LB transfers in this class and only one had fewer stars than Speights out of HS. Even if he wasnt an overvalued recruit probably better to find a place with less depth and competition where you are comfortable.

Why wouldn’t such a big time recruit get any action in two years? The Utes are loaded at linebacker. Karene Reid was second team all Pac-12 and was the Utes' No. 3 tackler (9.5 TFL). Mohamoud Diabate was fourth with 58 (13.5 TFL) and Lander Barton was tied for fifth with 46 and eight tackles for loss. They all return. Plus, JS does not go after Tufaga if he's unsure about him. Smith (and Bray) obviously thinks he can play.

Assuming, along with you, Speights returns, I still think replacing Fisher-Morris will come with some growing pains. Trying to replace talent is only one aspect and maybe not the most important one at that. It's replacing the chemistry and communication this years D had that might not be so easy to duplicate. Experience plays into that to and that takes time.

Trying to replace talent is only one aspect and maybe not the most important one at that. It's replacing the chemistry and communication this years D had that might not be so easy to duplicate. Experience plays into that to and that takes time. I beat the drum for Fisher-Morris for most of the season and think he had the best season of the LBs, but it was close between him and Speights. And Mascarenas-Arnold's numbers were really good considering he played less and missed a game. He had 37 total tackles (8th on the team), 5.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks and also an interception. Speights had eight TFLs, no sacks or picks, but led OSU with 83 total tackles. Fisher-Morris was third with 77 tackles, led the team with 8.5 TFLs. He had 1.5 sacks and one pick. So yeah, he will be missed but I'm really not that worried about a fall-off if Speights comes back. FWIW, Oladapo was second on the team with 80 tackles, four TFLs and 2.5 sacks. Not an LB, but definitely good that he's back as well, especially because he's effective in run support. I get what you're saying about chemistry and communication, but Speights and EMA have played together plenty of times. I think that will be more of an issue for Tufaga as he settles in. But that's also why spring is very important.

Why wouldn’t such a big time recruit get any action in two years? I asked myself that same thing when I first got to OSU!

WR Trevor Pope in the portal. No destination yet. A stud WR and maybe a seasoned CB would really polish off a fantastic off-season for Beavs
