It was more like 1K in the seats. One of the emptiest games I’ve been to. No band, so they had a DJ. 3 cheerleaders and about 20 students there. I remember going to a game against Idaho during Christmas break in ‘79. Can’t remember the actual attendance number but it was low low low, might have been closer to 1200 than 2600. And that was during the heyday, a 3 loss regular season, no pandemic worries (heck, before the 80s herpes panic) and high rankings. The Beavs about doubled Idaho’s score and there were few to watch it. It was like the day after Christmas so you’d expect low numbers, but have we ever really had good attendance during the holiday break against no name schools? The 1979 game against Idaho was the day after Christmas. Oregon State won 100-59, but it looks like it was in Portland. Paid attendance was 11,020+. Ray Blume broke Magic Johnson's Far West Classic assists record with 11. Oregon State also played Idaho in Portland in 1981, 1982, and 1986. Oregon State played Idaho in Provo in 1982 in the NCAA Tournament and at Gill in the NIT in 1983. But, otherwise, Oregon State did not play Idaho between 1973 and 1999.

I like the fact that Tinkle is trying to get Wright and Rochelin minutes and bring them along in the fold. It needs to be done. It is a common complaint a lot of people have had with Tinkle: the failure to get the new guys integrated. Wright and Rochelin have to be brought along to develop with the team. I even liked it against TA&M and attribute some of the difficulty in that game to Tinkle trying to get those two players ready for the season. It was an acceptable loss if we gained the future contribution of those two. I agree, but this is a bit of a different case then in years past when WT wasn’t getting newcomers enough tick. I’m guessing Wright might have been a starter day 1 if he hadn’t got hurt, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if Rochelin would have been too. Though the way Pope has played all season, hard to believe he wouldn’t have started regardless if everyone healthy. Plus, they needed the reinforcements in the backcourt. But he has done a good job working them in since they’ve been back. As I noted in earlier post, it allows WT to reduce Akanno’s minutes. He shouldn’t be playing 32-35 minutes as he was asked to because of no depth.

Weird on that attendance number. It was the only game I ever sat in the lower sections, I don't remember it being crowded at all. Perhaps I never looked behind me or I'm getting it confused with an old gymnastics meet around that time period...some memories are starting to fade these days.

Maybe no one was at Gill because it was in Portland? (Kidding)
