Yeaaaaa, but we were kinda 6-1 in spite of him, not really because of him. So, you're sure a different QB would have the ball in the exact spot against Stanford for Harrison to catch it and run for the TD?.....I'm not. Hey, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good |

Yeaaaaa, but we were kinda 6-1 in spite of him, not really because of him. I think some games, or parts of games, that may be true...but definitely not every game. Were the CAL or ASU wins despite him? He had moments, sure. But even in his better outings he still had the training wheels on. I'm not saying he can't take the next step, but he's got a lot of work to do. The civil war was his 7th start, right? If you didn't know any better, you'd think it was his first start. |

That sucks. I was hoping he could come back healthy and thought he might be the leader in the locker room to start next year. If he could just clean up the TOs, he was the more dynamic quarterback. Our offense was better with him, despite the squinting and happy feet in the pocket. He could sling the ball, just needed to be more consistent. I think they definitely have to hit the transfer portal now. Chiles may be the future, but throwing him to the wolves next year wouldn't be the best idea. If he could get a year under his belt watching a seasoned transfer QB he can hit the ground running in 2024. Marginally though. Excluding Utah, a game each player split, Against FBS competition, OSU offense average just under 20 yards per game more, nearly all attributed to Nolan running, which Gulbranson doesn't really do. However, in the same FBS game analysis (excluding Montana State in other words, which was massive statistical outlier performance against a lower division school) Chance's lead beavers scored 27.6 points in his starts while Gulbranson score 31.6. Neither, however, really put the offense on their shoulders. Chance and Ben combined for 15 TDs through the air. while we put in 33 TDs on the ground. Chance had 1 rushing TD, Bulbranson had 4. Point is, Chance had ever opportunity to take this team over and progress with it, as I noted before not only did he not progress, he appeared to regress. His 2021 performance was generally better than what he was showing so far in 2022. Weren't all Gulbransons "rushing" TD's like half yard plungers though? With our O line those are gimmes |

Let's not forget BG is 6-1 as a starter...so maybe he isn't as flashy as others... but 6-1 is 6-1 It's the Tim Tebow argument! That guy is a *winner* |

Their ratings are pretty much identical - Chance's edge is pretty small there, and 25% of Chance's play this year was against a poor FCS defense. And I'd argue that with a strong running game, the ability to not turn the ball over is more important than passing TDs. I'm sad that he left, but I also hope that the play he demonstrated this season would not be enough to win the job next year. Given that GB was able to pretty much match his overall rating and with fewer chances/experience to get there, maybe the writing was on the wall. |

The idea that the QB group is going to go three-deep with starting level talent is nonsense. It's good if you have two guys you can rely on and another couple that you hope will develop. Well, Oregon's third string guy throws the football better than anyone who saw the field for us this past year. I realize we're not the recruiting machine they are but we have to do better if we expect to stay at our current level. Our QB play has been good enough to get us 9 wins to date. The team has been carried by an excellent running game and an outstanding defense. That's not something we will be able to count on year in and year out. Programs like Oregon can stockpile talent to a certain extent. Most programs usually don't have that ability, including Oregon State. The Beavers have done a great job since the late 90s of recruiting (with the exception of the lost years under GA) and Smith seems to be heading to an even higher level. Although I don't think Gulbranson is the long-term answer at QB unless he shows significant improvement with his eyes (seeing the field better and not locking in on one receiver, etc.) but watch him when he has time to throw and has an open receiver. He can throw just as good a ball as anyone. I definitely agree that the team has been carried by the running game and defense. I think you can count on a pretty good running game at OSU. This has been a strength of the program for several decades and almost never drops off significantly. Keeping the defensive play at a high level is the biggest key. No way OSU goes 9-3 without it. So yeah, Smith needs to upgrade the situation at QB for next season, whether it's through the transfer portal or developing the players we know are going to be here in the spring. |

No matter how it goes I doubt our QB play will be worse than this year. Either someone will win the job or BG improves.
I doubt there is major changes without a change at OC which could be bad or good. Really bad.

Four of Nolan's TD passes came against Montana State. And he had eight interceptions in 16 quarters. That's not anywhere near good QB play and Smith was all too aware of it. I believe he was never going back to Nolan. |

And you're sure a different quarterback wouldn't have had the Beavs up by 14 at that point? I'm not. Exactly. We are 6-1 with him......who knows what we would have been without him. That's exactly why hindsight speculation is pointless. You're right, hindsight speculation is pointless.......but, past performances can affect future decisions. I don't think our coaching staff, right now, knowing what we know, would want to go into a 7 game stretch with BG at QB. |

I sure hope Chiles is ready next year. BG scares the heck out of me after that gruesome civil war performance. Don’t forget about his potentially disastrous late goal line fumble besides two seemingly unforced picks I am encouraged that Chiles in planning to enroll in the winter. Being here for spring ball should help him (and hopefully us) immensely! |

Hey we can sure hope for the best! Sounds like an amazing prospect for sure. On the other hand, I keep hearing about BG "improving." Seems like an odd take knowing by far his worst game was his most recent.
